  • Purpose: This research was carried out to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire (SDSCA) for Korean older adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Translation and back-translation were performed to develop the Korean version of the SDSCA. Then the Korean version SDSCA was applied to a sample of 112 older adults who had participated in diabetes self management education in Seoul. The internal consistency and the test-retest reliability were examined to test the reliability. Factor analysis was used to examine the construct validity. Results: The internal consistency measured with Cronbach's alpha was .77 and the total test-retest reliability was .68 with items ranging from .21 to 1.00. As the result of the factor analysis, six factors -foot care, diet, exercise, blood sugar test, medication, and smoking- were revealed as the original instrument subcategories. These six factors explained 81.17% of total variance. Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the Korean version SDSCA Questionnaire was supported for use in older patients with type 2 diabetes in Korea.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to categorize and to understand the structure of subjectivity in the gender role identity of older female adults. The perception of gender role identity is subjective and varies according to the uniqueness of individual experiences and the value of social culture. Methods: Q-methodology, a technique for extracting subjective opinions was used. In 2010, forty participants completed the Q-sort activity, rating each statement relative to the others. The Q sample has two categories, representing masculinity and femininity, and each category has 20 statements, resulting in 40 adjectives. Results: Using the Q factor analysis, three classifications were identified: 'caring-affectionate type,', 'assertive-confident type,' and 'sensitive-affectionate type.' Despite the differences among the three types in this research, elderly females are likely to have the understanding and patience to comfort others and care for the children. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed new dimensional types of gender role identity and raise the issue of why we need to develop methods for the new dimensional types. Based on the results, further research is needed to compare the findings with those of older males or with women of different age groups.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the risk of dysphagia among older adults in senior centers and to find the relationships between the risk of dysphagia and dysphagia-specific quality of life. Methods: The participants were 260 community-dwelling older adults, aged 65 years in two senior centers. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires or face to face interviews. The instruments were the modified dysphagia risk assessment scale for elderly and dysphagia-specific quality of life questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-test, $x^2$-test, logistic regression, and pearson's correlation. Results: 162 older adults (62.3%) were classified as having the risk of dysphagia. Severe dry mouth (OR=15.677, CI=2.986~82.297), neurologic disease (OR=10.125, CI=1.092~93.899), gastritis (OR=5.731, CI=1.482~22.173), denture discomfort (OR=2.969, CI=1.016~8.677), teeth discomfort (OR=2.61, CI=1.311~5.196) were the significant factors predicting the risk of dysphagia. There is a significant correlation between the risk of dysphagia and dysphagia-specific quality of life. Conclusion: Dysphagia could be a major health problem among community dwelling older adults. It can affect the dysphagia-specific quality of life. Older adults having severe dry mouth, neurologic disease, or gastritis should receive dysphagia risk assessment and proper management on a regular basis. An effective nursing intervention needs to be developed for the older adults with risk factors of dysphagia.

  • Purpose: The aims of current study were to assess the inhaler competency and medication adherence, and to identify association of inhaler competency with medication adherence in patients with obstructive lung disease. Methods: We did a secondary analysis of the Hanyang Obstructive Pulmonary Evaluation data in a single institution from June 2014 to April 2015 after an approval of Institutional Review Board. A total of 150 patients with asthma or chronic obstructive lung disease participated in the study. Inhaler competency was evaluated accuracy in each step for using metered dose inhaler. Medication adherence was calculated using actually dispensed doses based on the prescribed inhaler doses. Results: Older adults (${\geq}65$) had lower competency in using inhaler (66.7 vs 83.3, z=-4.52, p<.001) and poorer medication adherence (67.7 vs 91.8, $x^2=14.06$, p<.001) than adults (<65). Inhaler competency was associated with medication adherence (p=.26, p=.001). Surprisingly, more than 50% of patients were current smokers. Conclusion: Inhaler competency and medication adherence were lower in older adults with obstructive lung disease than those in adult-age patients. Therefore, an individual education program for older patients should be developed to improve the rates of proper use of inhalers. Nursing management for obstructive lung disease should focus on developing behavioral intervention strategies for smoking cessation.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for the basic data useful to the development of a quality brassiere featuring a good wearing feeling and an effect of reinstating and correcting breast shape. For this purpose, 220 adult women aged between 20 and 59 were sampled to survey their perceived and actual breast shapes. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. Most adult women correctly perceive the changes of their breast shapes as they become older. However, the younger women tend to evaluate their breast as larger than their actual sizes, being more dissatisfied with their breast shapes than older women, while wanting their constitution to be more high and slim. In short, there is a little difference between their perceived and actual breast shapes. 2. The breast shape perceived most by the adult women is "droopy type I"(37.7%), followed by "conical type"(21.8%), "flat type"(16.8%), "semi-circular"(10.8%), "droopy type II"(8.6%) and "extruded type"(5.0%) in their order. The younger women tend to perceive their breasts as "flat", "conical" or "semi-circular", while the older women tend to perceive their breasts as "droopy". 3. According to the increase of age, the items of height were decreased and items of width, depth, circumference and length were increased, being obser and breast point were drooped. so volume and bottom area of breast of 40ㆍ50's women's age group were larger than 20?30's women's age group and breast point width of 40ㆍ50's women was being wider by increase of interior dimensions of breast.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to have better data and to make efficient clinical reviews about children's growth based on two methods; X-ray of hand, and ultrasound of calcaneus. Methods : The study was composed of 100 patients(50 of boys and 50 of girls) who visited in department of pediatrics, O O university oriental hospital considering growth and their development. Bone age was measured by the TW3 method's RUS score in simple X-ray image of hand and bone density through ultrasonic image of calcaneus. To predict children's estimated height, their parent's height, bone age, and present height's percentile was measured. Results and Conclusions : 1. The bone age results from X-ray image of hand and ultrasonic image of calcaneus were correlated. Younger children have older bone age from hand's X-ray than the one from calcaneus's ultrasound. Older children have older bone age from calcaneus's ultrasound than one from hand's X-ray. 2. Predicted adult height by bone age(BH) of hand's X-ray and BH of calcaneus's ultrasound were correlated, but predicted adult height by inheritance(IH) was not correlated with others. 3. Bone age and predicted adult height were correlated with age, height, weight, BMI, and especially with age and height. 4. Measuring bone age by X-ray image of hand and ultrasonic image of calcaneus was simple and effective way of estimating children's growth and development.
