The structural design of a wind turbine must show the verification of the structural integrity of all load-carrying components. Also, design load calculations shall be performed using appropriate and accurate methods. In this study, advanced numerical approach for the calculation of design loads based on unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented considering extreme design load conditions such as the extreme coherent gust (ECG) and the 50 year extreme operating gust (EOG). Unsteady aerodynamic loads are calculated based on Reynolds average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with shear-stress transport k-ω(SST k-ω) turbulent model. A full three-dimensional 5 MW offshore wind-turbine model with rotating blades, hub, nacelle, and tower configuration is practically considered and its aerodynamic interference effect among blades, nacelle, and tower is also accurately considered herein. Calculated blade loads based on unsteady CFD method with respect to blade azimuth angle are compared with those by NREL FAST code and physically investigated in detail.
The seismic response, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of an offshore wind turbine with twisted tripod substructure subject to various pile-ground interactions are discussed in this paper. The acceleration responses of the tower head by four historical earthquakes are presented as the seismic response, while the other loads are assumed as ambient loads. For the pile-ground interactions, the fixed, linear and nonlinear models are employed to simulate the interactions and the p-y, t-z and Q-z curves are utilized for the linear and nonlinear models. The curves are designed for stiff, medium and soft clays, and thus, the seven types of the pile-ground interactions are used to compare the seismic response, the acceleration of the tower head. The mode shapes are similar to each other for all types of pile-ground interactions. The natural frequencies, however, are almost same for the three clay types of the linear model, while the natural frequency of the fixed support model is quite different from that of the linear interaction model. The wind turbine with the fixed support model has the biggest magnitude of acceleration. In addition, the nonlinear model is more sensitive to the stiffness of clay than the linear pile-ground interaction model.
In this study, vibration characteristics of offshore wind turbine tower (WTT) with gravity-based foundation (GBF) are identified from dynamic responses under wave-induced excitations. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the operational modal analysis methods such as frequency domain decomposition (FDD) and stochastic subspace identification (SSI) are selected to estimate modal parameters from output-only dynamic responses. Secondly, a GBF WTT model composed of superstructure, substructure and foundation is simulated as a case study by using a structural analysis program, MIDAS FEA. Thirdly, wave pressures acting on the WTT structure are established by nonlinear regular waves which are simulated from a computational fluid software, Flow 3D. Wave-induced acceleration responses of the target structure are analyzed by applying the simulated wave pressures to the GBF WTT model. Finally, modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are estimated from the output-only acceleration responses and compared with the results from free vibration analysis. The effect of wave height and period on modal parameter extraction is also investigated for the mode identification of the GBF WTT.
The present study developed a numerical simulation tool for the coupled dynamic analysis of multiple turbines on a single floater (or Multiple Unit Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (MUFOWT)) in the time domain, considering the multiple-turbine aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. The numerical tool developed in this study was designed based on and extended from the single-turbine analysis tool FAST to make it suitable for multiple turbines. For the hydrodynamic loadings of floating platform and mooring-line dynamics, the CHARM3D program developed by the authors was incorporated. Thus, the coupled dynamic behavior of a floating base with multiple turbines and mooring lines can be simulated in the time domain. To investigate the effect of asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the global performance and mooring line tensions of the MUFOWT, one turbine failure case with a fully feathered blade pitch angle was simulated and checked. The aerodynamic interference between adjacent turbines, including the wake effect, was not considered in this study to more clearly demonstrate the influence of the asymmetric aerodynamic loading on the MUFOWT. The analysis shows that the unbalanced aerodynamic loading from one turbine in MUFOWT may induce appreciable changes in the performance of the floating platform and mooring system.

In this study, the capability of an existing analysis method for the fluid-structure-soil interaction of an offshore wind turbine is expanded to account for the geometric nonlinearity and sea water drag force. The geometric stiffness is derived to take care of the large displacement due to the deformation of the tower structure and the rotation of the footing foundation utilizing linearized stability analysis theory. Linearizing the term in Morison's equation concerning the drag force, its effects are considered. The developed analysis method is applied to the earthquake response analysis of a 5 MW offshore wind turbine. Parameters which can influence dynamic behaviors of the system are identified and their significance are examined.
In order to support various studies for assessment of onshore and offshore wind turbine system including foundations, the land-based version of 2MW PMSG direct drive wind turbine has been analyzed using HAWC2 that account for the coupled dynamics of the wind inflow, elasticity, and controls of the turbine. this work presents the steady-state response of the system and natural frequency of the first thirteen structure turbine modes as a function of wind speed. Rotor, generator speeds, pitch angle, power production, thrust force, deflections of tower and blade are compared for one case below and one case above the rated wind speed.

Design lifetime of a wind turbine is required to be at least 20 years. The most important step to ensure the deign is to evaluate the loads on the wind turbine as accurately as possible. In this study, extreme design load of a offshore wind turbine using Garrad Hassan (GH) Bladed and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) FAST codes are calculated considering structural dynamic loads. These wind turbine aeroelastic analysis codes are high efficiency for the rapid numerical analysis scheme. But, these codes are mainly based on the mathematical and semi-empirical theories such as unsteady blade element momentum (UBEM) theory, generalized dynamic wake (GDW), dynamic inflow model, dynamic stall model, and tower influence model. Thus, advanced CFD-dynamic coupling method is also applied to conduct cross verification with FAST and GH Bladed codes. If the unsteady characteristics of wind condition are strong, such as extreme design wind condition, it is possible to occur the error in analysis results. The NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine model as a benchmark case is practically considered for the comparison of calculated designed loads. Computational analyses for typical design load conditions such as normal turbulence model (NTM), normal wind profile (NWP), extreme operation gust (EOG), and extreme direction change (EDC) have been conducted and those results are quantitatively compared with each other. It is importantly shown that there are somewhat differences as maximum amount of 18% among numerical tools depending on the design load cases.

In this study, we investigated the effect of shear-key placement on the performance of grouted connections in offshore wind-turbine structures. Considering the challenges of height control during installation, we designed and analyzed three grouted connection configurations. We compared the crack patterns and strain distribution in the shear keys under axial loading. The results indicate that the misalignment of shear keys significantly influences the ultimate load capacity of grouted connections. Notably, when the shear keys were positioned facing each other, the ultimate load decreased by approximately 15%, accompanied by the propagation of irregular cracks in the upper shear keys. Furthermore, the model with 50% misalignment in the shear-key placement exhibited the highest ultimate strength, indicating a more efficient load resistance than the reference model. This indicates that tensile-load-induced cracking and the formation of compressive struts in opposite directions significantly affect the structural integrity of grouted connections. These results demonstrate the importance of considering buckling effects in the design of grouted connections, particularly given the thin and slender nature of the inner sleeves. This study provides valuable insights into the design and analysis of offshore wind-turbine structures, highlighting the need for refined design formulas that account for shifts in shear-key placement and their structural implications.

This paper deals with the analysis of dynamic characteristics of mooring system of floating-type offshore wind turbine. A spar-type floating structure which consists of a nacelle, a tower and the platform excepting blades, is used to model the floating wind turbine and connect three catenary cables to substructure. The motion of floating structure is simulated when the mooring system is attached using irregular wave Pierson-Moskowitz model. The mooring system is analyzed by changing cable position of floating structure. The dynamic behavior characteristics of mooring system are investigated comparing with cable tension and 6-dof motion of floating structure. These characteristics are much useful to initial design of floating-type structure. From the simulation results, the optimized design parameter that is cable position of connect point of mooring cable can be obtained.
Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) have been developed to overcome large water depths and leverage the abundant wind resource in deep seas. However, wind-wave misalignment can occur depending on the weather conditions, and most megawatt (MW)-class turbines are horizontal-axis wind turbines subjected to yaw errors. Therefore, the power performance and dynamic response of super-large FOWTs exposed simultaneously to these external conditions must be analyzed. In this study, several scenarios combining wind-wave misalignment and yaw error were considered. The IEA 15 MW reference FOWT (v1.1.2) and OpenFAST (v3.4.1) were used to perform numerical simulations. The results show that the power performance was affected more significantly by the yaw error; therefore, the generator power reduction and variability increased significantly. However, the dynamic response was affected more significantly by the wind-wave misalignment increased; thus, the change in the platform 6-DOF and tower loads (top and base) increased significantly. These results can be facilitate improvements to the power performance and structural integrity of FOWTs during the design process.
