  • In this paper, the effect of the phase noise of a local oscillator on the ACPR of a transmitter and the reception sensitivity of a receiver to meet the TIA/EIA/IS-98-D for the CDMA mobile station was analyzed. And the optimum condition for performance of the local oscillator was suggested. It was found that the phase noise level of the local oscillator in a receiver and a transmitter should be below -138.3dBc/Hz and -120dBc/Hz, respectively, at 900kHz offset. It was confirmed that the reception sensitivity and ACPR efficiency were satisfactory when the signal of the local oscillator to the down-converter of a receiver with the phase noise level of less than -138.3dBc/Hz is supplied to the up-converter of the transmitter.

  • Dual laser heat sources were used for polymer based material joining. An infrared camera and thermocouple DAQ system were used to correlate the temperature distribution to computer simulation. A 50 degree tilted pre-heating laser source was acting as a heating source to promote the temperature to minimize thermal shock by the following a welding heat source. Based on the experimental result, the skin depth was empirically estimated for computer simulation. The offsets of 3mm, 5mm and 10mm split by weld and preheat were effectively used to control the temperature distribution for the optimal laser joining process. The closer offset resulted in an excessive melting or burning caused by sudden temperature rising. The laser power was split by 50%, 75% and 100% of the weld power, and the best results were found at 50% of preheating. To accurately simulate the physical laser beam absorption and joining optical properties were experimentally measured for the computer FEM simulation. The simulation results showed close correlation between theoretical and experimental results. The developed dual laser process is expected to increase productivity and minimize the cost for the final products.

  • In this paper, we report an analytical modeling and 2-D Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD simulation of ion implanted silicon carbide MESFETs. The model has been developed to obtain the threshold voltage, drain-source current, intrinsic parameters such as, gate capacitance, drain-source resistance and transconductance considering different fabrication parameters such as ion dose, ion energy, ion range and annealing effect parameters. The model is useful in determining the ion implantation fabrication parameters from the optimization of the active implanted channel thickness for different ion doses resulting in the desired pinch off voltage needed for high drain current and high breakdown voltage. The drain current of approximately 10 A obtained from the analytical model agrees well with that of the Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD simulation and the breakdown voltage approximately 85 V obtained from the TCAD simulation agrees well with published experimental results. The gate-to-source capacitance and gate-to-drain capacitance, drain-source resistance and trans-conductance were studied to understand the device frequency response. Cut off and maximum frequencies of approximately 10 GHz and 29 GHz respectively were obtained from Sentaurus TCAD and verified by the Smith's chart.

  • This paper describes fully integrated low phase noise MMIC voltage controlled oscillators(VCOs). The Asymmetrical Inductance Tank VCO(AIT-VCO), which optimize the shortcoming of the previous tank's inductance optimization approach, has lower phase noise performance due to achieving higher equivalent parallel resistance and Q value of the tank. This VCO features an output power signal in the range of - 11.53 dBm and a tuning range of 261 MHz or 15.2 % of its operating frequency. This VCO exhibits a phase noise of - 117.3 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 100 kHz from carrier. A phase noise reduction of 15 dB was achieved relative to only one spiral inductor. The AIT-VCO achieved low very low figure of merit of -184.6 dBc/Hz. The die area, including buffers and bond pads, is $0.9{\times}0.9mm^2$.

  • We have studied and demonstrated general, systematic error-correction methods for a dual rotating quarter-wave plate ellipsometer. To estimate and correct 5 systematic error sources (three offset angles and two unexpected retarder phase delays), we used 11 of the 25 Fourier components of the ellipsometry signal obtained in the absence of an optical sample. Using these 11 Fourier components, we can determine the errors from the 5 sources with nonlinear optimization methods. We found systematic errors ${\epsilon}_3$, ${\epsilon}_4$, ${\epsilon}_5$) are more sensitive to the inverted Mueller matrix than retarder phase delay errors (${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$) because of their small condition numbers. To correct these systematic errors we have found that error of any variety must be less than 0.05 rad. Finally, we can use the magnitudes of these errors to correct the Mueller matrix of optical components. From our experimental ellipsometry signals, we can measure phase delay and the rotational angular position of its fast axis for a half-wave plate.

  • Purpose : A numerical method of designing a multiple quantum filter (MQF) is presented for the optimum detection of myo-inositol (mI), an important brain metabolite, by using in vivo proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^1$-HMRS). Materials and Methods : Starting from the characterization of the metabolite, the filter design includes the optimization of the sequence parameters such as the two echo times (TEs), the mixing time (TM), and the flip angle and offset frequency of the 3rd $90^{\circ}$ pulse which converts multiple quantum coherences (MQCs) back into single quantum coherences (SQCs). The optimized filter was then tested both in phantom and in human brains. Results : The results demonstrate that the proposed MQF can improve the signal-to-background ratio of the target metabolite by a factor of more than three by effectively suppressing the signal from the background metabolites. Conclusion : By incorporating a numerical method into the design of MQFs in $^1$-HMRS the spectral integrity of a target metabolite, in particular, with a complicated spin system can be substantially enhanced.

  • To recover transmitted signal perfectly at DTV receiver, we have to acquire carrier frequency synchronization to compensate pilot signal which located in wrong position and rotated phase. Also, we need a symbol timing synchronization to compensate sampling timing error. Conventionally, to synchronize symbol timing, we use Gardner's scheme which used in multi-level signal. Gardner's scheme is well known for its sampling the timing error signal from every symbol and it makes easy to detect and keep timing sync in multi-path channel. In this paper, to discuss the problem when the received power level is out of range and we cannot get synchronization information. With this problem, we use 2 step procedures. First, we put a received signal power compensation block before Garder's timing error detector. Second, adaptive loop filter to get a fast synchronization information and averaging loop filter's output value to reduce the amount of jitter after synchronization in PLL(Phased Locked Loop) circuit which is used to get a carrier frequency synchronization and symbol timing synchronization. Using the averaging value, we can estimate offset. Based on offset changing ratio, we can adapt adaptive loop filter to carrier frequency and symbol timing synchronization circuit.

  • In this paper, we implement the measurement functionality for performance measurements of EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) terminal by using software. Generally speaking, the receiving algorithms in normal MODEM cannot be used directly to a measurement system due to the lack of accuracy. Therefore, we propose a new receiver algorithm for precise EDGE signal measurements. In the proposed algorithm, 2-stage (coarse stage, fine stage) parameters estimation (symbol-timing, frequency offset, carrier phase) scheme is used. To improve the estimation accuracy, we increase the number of the received signal samples by interpolation. The proposed EDGE signal measurement algorithm can be used for verifying the hardware measurement system, and also can be used for the commercial systems through software optimization.

  • In this paper, we suggests a Ka-band LNB considering next-generation UHD satellite TVRO. Since Ka-band has grater attenuation than Ku-band in atmosphere, we designed the low-noise down-converter to improve receiving sensitivity and to extend a dynamic range of receiver. It aims to compensate a quality of ultra high definition transmission signal for rainfall. The low-noise block diagram consists of a three-staged amplifier (LNA), band-pass filter for deleting image (BPF), mixer and IF when considering nonlinear characteristics in the receiver RF front end module. Also, we showed a LNB through optimization processes affecting dynamic range directly in receiver FEM. Asa resuly of experiment, the gain of low-noise down-converter show between 58.5dB and 60.7dB, the noise figure has a high characteristic as 1.38dB. Finally, the phase noise of local oscillator is -63.10dBc at 100MHz offset frequency.
