  • Odor dispersion around a cubic building from rooftop odor emissions was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Shear Stress Transport (here after SST) $k-{\omega}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate the flow and odor dispersion around a cubic building. The CFD simulations were performed for three different configurations of cubic buildings comprised of one building, two buildings or three buildings. Five test emission rates were assumed as 1000 OU/s, 2000 OU/s, 3000 OU/s, 4000 OU/s and 5000 OU/s, respectively. Experimental data from wind tunnels obtained by previous studies are used to validate the numerical result of an isolated cubic building. The simulated flow and concentration results of neutral stability condition were compared with the wind tunnel experiments. The profile of streamline velocity and concentration simulation results show a reasonable level of agreement with wind tunnel data. In case of a two-building configuration, the result of emission rate 1000 OU/s illustrates the same plume behavior as a one-building configuration. However, the plume tends to the cover rooftop surface and windward facet of a downstream building as the emission rate increases. In case of a three-building configuration, low emission rates (<4000 OU/s) form a similar plume zone to that of a two-building configuration. However, the addition of a third building, with an emission rate of 5000 OU/s, creates a much greater odorous plume zone on the surface of second building in comparison with a two-building configuration.

  • Separation distance between industrial source and residential areas to avoid odor annoyance was investigated using AUSPLUME model. A Gaussian plume model (AUSPLUME) for the dispersion was used to calculate odor emission from ground level area source. Using the dispersion model to calculate ambient odor concentrations, the separation distance between industrial source and residental areas was defined by %HA (percentage of highly annoyed person) and odor percentile concentration (C98). The result was compared with the separation distance of various nation guidelines for livestock buildings. The calculated separation distance for industrial source showed similar pattern comparing with various guidelines for livestock buildings.

  • Moths have a well-developed sex pheromone communication system. Male moths exhibit an extremely sensitive and selective sex pheromone detection system so that they can detect the sex pheromone produced by conspecific females and locate them for successful mating. Using the pheromone detection system, male moths display characteristic stereotypic behavioral responses, flying upwind to follow intermittent filamentous pheromone strands in pheromone plume. The chemical composition of female sex pheromone in moths, typically comprised of multiple compounds, is species-specific. Male moths contain specialized pheromone receptor neurons on the antennae to detect conspecific sex pheromone accurately, and distinguish it from the pheromones produced by other species. The signals from pheromone receptor neurons are integrated and induce relevant behavior from the male moths. Male moths also contain olfactory sensory neurons in pheromone sensilla, specialized for pheromone-related behavioral antagonist compounds, which can enhance discrimination between conspecific and heterospecific pheromones. Here we review reports on the sex pheromone detection system in male moths and their related responses, and suggest future research direction.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dispersion prediction of odor from Hanwoo and dairy farms. Gaussian Plume model used in considering of farm size, wind velocity, atmospheric stability and threshold odor unit to prediction of odor dispersion based on the survey on current state of odor emission and control from 9 site of Hanwoo and 9 site of dairy farms. Farm size, wind velocity and atmospheric stability were affected the distance of odor dispersion, showed longer distance in cases of large farm, low wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition. We will suggestion the adjusted distance of odor dispersion according to farm size was estimated to 50~100 m in Hanwoo farm and 50~150 m in dairy farm when apply the 3OU, 5 m/s wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dispersion prediction of odor from swine farms in Korea. Gaussian Plume model used in considering of farm size, wind velocity, atmospheric stability and threshold odor unit to prediction of odor dispersion based on the survey on current state of odor emission and control from 48 site of swine farms. Farm size, wind velocity and atmospheric stability were affected the distance of odor dispersion, showed longer distance in cases of large farm, low wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition. We will suggestion the adjusted distance of odor dispersion according to farm size was estimated to 180 m in small farm and 320 m in large farm when apply the 3 OU, 5 m/s wind velocity and stable atmospheric condition.

  • The occurrence of white plume in the cooling tower is phenomenon that the steam in the air through the cooling tower fan is condensed again by the cold ambient air to become saturated moist air. Accordingly, this can cause many problems like spoiling landscape around the cooling tower, odor of ambient air, falling accident by frozenness in the winter, and traffic accident, etc. This study was to install the heat exchanger in the inside of the cooling tower in order to prevent the white plume phenomenon in the cooling tower without affecting the performance of cooling tower. In addition, this study was to discharge the part of cooling water into the atmosphere through the recirculation of heat exchanger after creating dry air by heating the saturated moist air to the dew point temperature. At that time, this study was to conduct the experimental study in order to secure the optimal design data to prevent the white plume in the cooling tower because it checked the dry·moist temperature and relative humidity in the inside·outside of cooling tower on the moist air, and evaluated the performance of the heat exchanger.
