Purpose: The aims of this study were to investigate the stereoacuity and subjective symptoms of aniseikonia with prescription of the size lens. Methods: Participants were myopic anisometropia patients with the binocular refraction difference between 1.75 D~3.50 D. Inclusion criteria of participants were no ocular pathology, no amblyopia, more than 1.0 of corrected visual acuity. With fully corrected spectacles and a correction with the size lens, Awaya aniseikonia test and Randot Stereo test were conducted respectively. In addition, subjective symptoms were also examined using questionnaire. Results: As the anisometropia increased, the aniseikonia increased. Under the anisometropia with same refractive correction was different for each individual. The prescription of size lens caused less aniseikonia than the general prescription of glasses. In addition, prescription of the size lens improved stereoacuity and relieved the symptoms of asthenopia. Conclusions: The prescription of size lens that can correct aniseikonia with prescription of glasses can improve stereoacuity and reduced asthenopia.
Sex and its tropic hormones influence the lacrimal system, corneal anatomy and disease, aqueous humor dynamics and glaucoma, crystalline lens and cataract, and retinal disease. Dry eye occurs especially frequently during pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, and after menopause, during which androgen levels decrease. Androgen control development, differentiation, and lipid production of sebaceous glands throughout the body, and androgen deficiency also leads to meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. On the other hand, estrogen causes a reduction in size, activity, and lipid production of sebaceous glands. Sex and its tropic hormones also influence the corneal anatomy and disease, and corneal thickening occurred on the second day of the menstrual cycle and around the time of ovulation and appeared to be related to estrogen levels. Fuchs' dystrophy is more commonly seen in postmenopausal women than men and may be linked to hormonal changes that occur with aging. In addition, overexpression of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the conjunctiva of vernal keratoconjunctivitis patients. Serum progesterone levels also may be associated with intraocular pressure especially in pregnant women, and for the women. For women with cataracts, hormone levels were typical of menopause, and there was a significant negative correlation between estradiol and follicular stimulating hormone levels. In addition, serum testosterone levels are associated with the development of diabetic retinopathy. Although the role of sex hormones on the eye is largely unknown, and the results should be interpreted with caution until replicated, the functions of sex hormones in ocular disease remains to be investigated, because they may be involved in structure and function of the ocular components, which are important in the pathogenesis of ocular disease.
Visual system of Korean Salamander(Hynobius leechi) was morphologically studied. Fertilized eggs in egg sacs were collected and were developed in sterile saline solution. Various sized larvae of 5-30mm in length were fixed. Specimens were paraffin sectioned and were observed under light microscope. In 5mm length larva, lens rudiment induced by optic cup was combined with sensory ectoderm. The shape of lens was changed as spherical in 12mm length larva, but the retinal layer did not differentiated into three layers. The differentiation of retinal layer was clear in 14-16mm length larva. The central region of lens fibers was degenerated. Iris and ciliary body were formed from the marginal zone of optic cup in 20mm length larva. Choroid was thicker in elder eye of 30mm length larva and cartilage developed at outer region of optic cup. The outer segment of photoreceptor cell layer grew longitudinally. Optic nerve was connected to the ventral part of brain through cartilage.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to design the finite model eye with GRIN lens similar to actual eye, which considered the effect of iris eccentricity on eyes. Methods: By using the finite model eye with Radial GRIN and Spherical GRIN, which were designed previously, the location of iris was eccentrically located by 0.5 mm in the direction of nose to show the same eye as actual one. For ray trace and design, Code V program of Optical Research Associates (ORA) was adopted. Results: Designed model eye was compared to actual eye depending on iris eccentricity and the model eye which showed reduced value was corrected according to actual eye to design the finite model eye. Conclusions: Ocular optical systems considered the point that iris was a rotational asymmetry and designed the finite model eye with GRIN lens, which was similar to actual eye, by considering the effect of iris eccentricity on eye.
We conducted both the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and mitochondrial (mt) DNA RFLP analyses for a genetic characterization of Acanthamoeba isolates from contact lens storage cases of students in Seoul, Korea. Twenty-three strains of Acanthamoeba from the American Type Culture Collection and twelve clinical isolates from Korean patients were used as reference strains. Thirty-nine isolates from contact lens storage cases were classified into seven types (KA/LS1 , KA/LS2, KA/LS4, KA/LS5, KA/LS7 KA/LS18, KA/LS31). Four types (KA/LS1 , KA/LS2, KA/LS5, KA/LS18) including 33 isolates were regarded as A. castellanii complex by riboprints. KA/LS1 type was the most predominant (51.3%) in the present survey area, followed by KA/LS2 (20.9%), and KA/LSS (7.7%) types. Amoebae of KA/LS1 type had the same mtDNA RFLP and riboprint patterns as KA/E2 and KA/E12 strains, clinical isolates from Korean keratitis patients. Amoebae of KA/LS2 type had the identical mtDNA RFLP patterns with A. castellanii Ma strain, a corneal isolate from an American patient as amoebae of KA/LS5 type, with KA/E3 and KA/E8 strains from other Korean keratitis patients. Amoebae of KA/LS 18 type had identical patterns with JAC/E1, an ocular isolate from a Japanese patient. Three types , which remain unidentified at species level, were not corresponded with any clinical isolate in their mtDNA RFLP and riboprint patterns. Out of 39 isolates analyzed in this study, mtDNA RFLP and riboprint patterns of 33 isolates (84.6%) were identical to already known clinical isolates, and therefore, they may be regarded as potentially keratopathogenic. These results suggest that contact lens wearers in Seoul should pay more attention to hygienic maintenance of contact lens storage cases for the prevention of Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Presence of eyelid on anterior ocular surface and its thermal effects play significant role in maintaining eye temperature. In most of the literatures of thermal modeling in human eye, the eyelid is not considered as an eye component. In this paper, finite element model is developed to investigate the thermal effects of eyelid closure and opening in human eye. Based on different properties and parameter values reported in literatures, the bio-heat transfer process is simulated and compared with experimental results in steady and transient state cases. The sensitivity analysis using various ambient temperatures, evaporation rates, blood temperatures and lens thermal conductivities is carried out. The temperature values so obtained in open eye show a good agreement with past results. The closure of eyelid is found to increase/decrease the eye temperature significantly than its opening, when the parameter values are considered to be at extreme.
The Anterior surface and posterior surface of rigid gas permeable(RGP) contact lenses has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. Results point out that the ultrastructure of contact lenses surface was some different on the anterior and posterior surface of RGP. The Quantitative study of surface roughness suggest that the anterior surface was more smooth than the posterior surface. These results suggest that the materials characters appeared the contact lens surface. The morphology of the anterior and posterior surface have different, Maybe, these result have a manufacture processing of the contact lenses. But some surface appeared a foreign body particles.
The a-C:H films have been grown on the glass substrate by PECVD method, where plasma was generated with a 60 Hz line power source. The carbonization is checked from peak intensities of D($sp^3$) and G($sp^2$) peaks in Raman spectra and is analyzed using the Gaussian convolution method of spectrum. Both the bonding strength of C-H and the ratio of $sp^3$ to $sp^2$ in bonding are found to be slightly dependent of partial pressure of $C_2H_2$.
Anterior subcapsular cataract was developed by opacification with transdifferentiation and abnormal proliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and pathological accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM). After-cataract also be caused by a similar transdifferentiation of LECs remaining after surgery and the accompanying increase of ECM deposits. It is blown that prostaglandin E2 and cytokine, such as TGF-$\beta$, bFGF, and IL-1, were associated with abnormal proliferation and transdifferentiation of LECs. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of transforming growth factor-$\alpha$ (TGF-$\alpha$), transforming growth factor-$\beta_1$(TGF-$\beta_1$) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in LECs of senile and diabetic cataract. The expressions of these growth factors in lens epithelial cells were determined. The sample for growth factor determination were collected in senile cataract patients without metabolic disorder, especially diabetes mellitus and diabetic cataract patients. The mRNA expression of growth factors was detected by semi-quantitative reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) followed by Southern blot analysis. Statistics were analysed using Wilcoxon rank sum test. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR/southern analysis of RNA obtained from thirty surgical specimens demonstrated that the level of mRNA expression of TGF-$\alpha$, -$\beta_1$ and bFGF was increased in diabetic cataract lens tissues compared with senile cataract specimens but non-significant, bFGF and TGF-$\beta_1$ mRNA expression were detected in most patients, expression level of TGF-$\beta_1$ was most high on the basis of normal ocular concentration. Detection rate of TGF-$\alpha$ in diabetic cataract was 1.5 fold higher than in senile cataract (P=0.098). TGF-$\alpha$, TGF-$\beta_1$, and bFGF mRNA expression of LECs were detected in senile and diabetic cataract. In both patient groups, expression level of TGF-$\beta_1$, mRNA was high, so We suggest TGF-$\beta_1$ strong influence in development of senile cataract and of diabetic cataract also. TGF-$\alpha$ expression level was similar but more frequently detected in diabetic cataract than in senile cataract. In conclusion, TGF-$\alpha$ may be associated with early development of diabetic cataract.
Purpose: This study was to investigate visual performance and subjective satisfaction with multifocal soft contact lenses at near works in university students. Methods: In a cross-over study design, 26 students (6 male, 20 female) who did not have any ocular disorder with at least 20/20(1.0) binocular vision were fitted with singlevision lenses (SofLens$^{TM}59$, Bausch + Lomb Co. USA) or multifocal lenses (SofLens Multifocal, Bausch + Lomb Co. USA). After 2 weeks, visual performance assessments included visual acuity, stereoacuity and contrast sensitivity function at distance and near. Near point of accommodation, accommodative facility, near point of convergence, vergence facility and near range of clear vision at near were examined. Students' satisfaction and preference were measured using survey questionaries. Results: Subjects maintained at least 20/20 binocular vision with multifocal and single-vision lenses at distance and near. There was no difference between multifocal and single-vision lenses in stereoacuity, contrast sensitivity function and vergence facility at far and near. The near point of accommodation, accommodative facility, near point of convergence and the near range of clear vision with multifocal lenses were better than single-vision lenses. On the survey questionaries, subjects reported that they preferred and satisfied with multifocal lenses with near works, and single-vision lenses with distance works. Conclusions: The majority of university students preferred multifocal to single vision lenses because multifocal lenses provided better visual performance at near works. This study suggests that multifocal lens is helpful for young adult in prolonged near works.
