개 전안방 안구사상충증 (Ocular Filariasis in Canine Anterior Chamber)

  • An one-year-old, female pointer dog with conjunctival hyperemia, corneal opaque and ocular pain in right eye was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Chungbuk National University. In the ophthalmic examination the worm was observed in anterior chamber, The heart worm antigen test was positive. A modified Knott's test was negative. The values of complete blood count and serum chemistry (TP, BUN, creatinine, AST, ALT, ALP, albumin, globuline) showed normal ranges. Any abnormality was not detected in the heart using a thoracic radiography and cardiac sonography. Therefore, this dog was diagnosed as ocular filariasis. The worm was removed by surgical incision through a limbus of cornea. The closure of limbal incision was sutured in a simple interrupted suture pattern with 6-0 silk and the eye was reinflated with sterile saline solution. Antibiotics and dexamethasone ophthalmic solution were applied to right eye every 24 hours for 7 days. To prevent latent filariasis, ivermectin was also administered on day 14 of operation. The heart worm antigen test on day 60 was negative. The dog was successfully cured.

한국 진도견의 안과질환에 관한 연구 (A Survey of Ophthalmic Diseases in Korean Jindo dogs)

  • This study presented the results of ophthalmic examinations performed on 545 Korean Jindo dogs. The most prevalent ocular variation within normal limits was hyoid vessel remnant (12.7%) and prominence of lens suture was also noticed (1.7%). The most common ocular diseases were retinal scars (6.8%), focal cataract (4.6%) and persistent pupillary membrane (4.2%). Inherited ocular diseases found in this study were persistent pupillary membrane (4.2%), persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (0.6%), retinal dysplasia (0.6%), entropion (0.4%) and progressive retinal atrophy (0.4%). The prevalence of ocular diseases was higher in Male than in Female and proportionately higher in the older dogs. The most prevalence was shown in white coat color dogs. The fundus color changes according to the age was not related in coat colors and shown same pattern.

Tear Staining Syndrome을 보이는 Poodle에 있어서 내안각의 세균총 및 눈물의 Lactoferrin 함량 (Ocular Bacteria and Concentration of Lactoferrin in Poodle Dogs with Tear Staining Syndrome)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effects of ocular bacteria and tear lactoferrin on the Tear Staining Syndrome(TSS) in poodle dogs. Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Micrococcus and Pseudomonas were the most Prevalent microorganisms isolated in normal eyes of poodle dogs, whereas the predominant isolates in the poodle dogs with TSS were Micrococcus, Staptococcus and Staphylococcus. There were no significant differences between the normal and tear-stained poodle dogs in the quantity of tear lactoferrin. In vitro hair staining experiment, bacteria isolated from the eyes with TSS and lactoferrin didn't stain hair. The results have shown that either ocular bacteria or tear lactoferrins were not related to the TSS.

Recording and interpretation of ocular movements: spontaneous and induced nystagmus

  • The ultimate purpose of eye movement is to maintain clear vision by ensuring that images of observed objects are focused on the fovea in the retina. Accurate evaluation of ocular movements, including nystagmus and saccadic intrusions, provides very useful information for determining the overall function and abnormality of the complex oculomotor system, from the peripheral vestibular system to the cerebrum. Eye movement tests are therefore essential for the accurate diagnosis of patients who complain of dizziness and imbalance. They help to predict lesion locations from the peripheral vestibular system to the central cerebral cortex and play an important role in differentiation from other diseases. The methodology of recording and interpreting ocular movements using video-oculography are described in this review article.

Ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma: a narrative review

  • Lymphoma is the most common primary tumor of the orbit, accounting for 55% of all orbital malignancies. When divided into histopathological subtypes, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) comprises the largest proportion. Clinical manifestations are unspecific, but in patients with slow-growing painless orbital mass, or red conjunctival lesion suggestive of 'salmon patch', ocular adnexa lymphoma (OAL) should be suspected. Although the pathogenetic mechanism of ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma (OAML) is not yet fully understood, the relationship between OAML and Chlamydia psittaci has been hypothesized recently, similar to that between gastric MALT lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori. This suggests a new treatment option for OAML; bacterial eradication therapy with systemic antibiotics. Several other treatment methods for OAML have been introduced, but no treatment guidelines have been established yet. In this article, we summarize the current knowledge on the clinical features, pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, therapeutic strategies, and prognosis of OAML.

Effects of Various Laser Wavelengths and Power Densities on the Ocular Damage in Pigmented Rats

  • With the widespread use of laser in medical and industrial settings, the incidence of laser injury to the ocular continues to grow among workers involved in handling lasers. The aim of this study is to compare ocular damages after irradiation with various laser wavelengths and power density. Ocular of pigmented rats was irradiated with $CO_2$ laser, 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, and 532 nm diode laser. We observed damage of cornea, lens, and retina using slit lamp microscope and funduscopy. H&E staining of histopathology were applied to study the specimens. The higher exposure ($200mW/cm^2$, 10 sec) with $CO_2$ laser resulted in severe damage at the cornea. For the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, the higher exposure than $10mW/cm^2$ (10 sec) resulted in damage at the cornea and lens. Further, with the 532 nm diode laser, retinal lesions were induced when $10mW/cm^2$ (0.25 sec) was delivered to the eye. Theses results suggest that the ocular damages are different from various laser wavelength and power density.

다양한 환경 하에서 신장 질환 진단을 위한 색차 기반 찰색 방법의 제안 (Ocular Inspection Using Color Analysis in CIE Lab for Kidney Disease in Various Situations)

  • 얼굴에서 병색을 찾는 한의학의 망진 분야는 아직도 임상의의 주관적인 판단에 의해 진단이 행해지고 있다. 이 를 위해 본 논문에서는 찰색 분야에 대한 정량화, 객관화 작업을 행하고자 한다. 특히 그 간 찰색에 대한 연구 중 가장 큰 문제로 지적 되어온 다양한 환경에서의 색채현성 확보의 어려움 그리고 질환과 찰색간의 유의성 입증을 위한 질환자와 정상인간의 색 분석의 난점을 해결하고자 한다. 즉, 객관성 있는 색 재현 및 색 분석 결과를 얻기 위해 기존의 색 분석 방식이 아닌 새로운 색 분석 방식을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 CIE Lab색 체계를 적용하여 색 분석을 행하고 안면의 각 부위와의 색차를 구하여 이를 정상인과 질환자군의 비교 분석을 실시하여 기존 방법들의 단점을 극복하고자 한다. 연구는 실험 대상자를 정상인과 신장 질환자로 구분하여 자료를 수집하여 분류 하였으며 특히 신장질환을 중심으로 실험을 수행하였다. 끝으로 실험 결과의 분석 및 비교를 통하여 자료 수집 환경에 관계없이 얼굴 각 부위에 대해 색차를 통한 질환 진단의 유효성을 입증 하고자 한다.

알코올 섭취 후 시간경과에 따른 시 기능의 변화 (Time-dependent Changes of Ocular Functions after Alcohol Ingestion)

  • 목적: 혈 중 알코올 농도의 증가가 시력 및 시 기능에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 체중 kg당 0.7g의 알코올을 섭취하고 1시간, 4시간 및 24시간이 경과한 후의 혈 중 알코올 농도, 시력, 굴절이상도, 폭주근점, 상대조절력, 사위, 그리고 상대폭주력의 변화를 측정하고 분석하였다. 결과: 알코올 섭취 1시간 경과 후, 혈 중 알코올 농도는 가장 높았고 근시화 및 측정 폭주근점, 양성 음성상대폭주력과 사위도의 변화가 가장 크게 나타났다. 그러나 알코올 섭취 24시간 경과 후에는 대부분의 검사값들이 알코올 섭취 전의 90%~99% 수준까지 복귀되는 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 혈 중 알코올 농도의 증가는 시력 및 시 기능 진단에 의의있는 변화를 일으킬 수 있으므로, 굴절검사 및 시 기능검사 전 알코올 섭취에 대한 사전 정보를 충분히 파악하여야 할 것이다.

안구운동이 대학생의 눈 건강과 동체시력에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Eye Health and Dynamic Visual Activity on Eye Movement in University Students)

  • 젊은 세대들은 스마트폰, 텔레비전, 컴퓨터 등 다양한 시각 매체들의 발달로 눈을 많이 사용함으로써 눈의 건강도 약화되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 안구운동과 치료적 마사지로 안구근육을 자극하여 눈건강과 동체시력에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 20대의 대학생 38명을 대상으로 대조군(18명)과 실험군(20명)으로 나누고, 실험군은 안구운동과 치료적 마사지를 매일 30분씩, 주 5회, 4주 동안 실시하였다. 눈 피로도, 눈 뜬 상태 유지 시간, 안구표면온도, 동체시력은 연구 전과 4주 후에 측정하였다. 4주 후 눈피로도는 유의하게 감소하였고(p<.05), 눈 뜬 상태 유지 시간은 유의하게 증가하였다(p<.05). 안구표면온도는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았고(p>.05), 동체시력은 유의하게 증가하였다(p<.05). 따라서, 눈의 기능 증진과 눈 건강을 위하여 안구운동과 치료적 마사지를 권장한다. 눈 건강을 회복하고 예방하기 위한 연구자료로 활용되길 기대한다.

주시안과 눈꺼풀 올림근 기능의 상관관계 분석 (Correlation Analysis of Ocular Dominance and Levator Palpebrae Superioris Muscle Function)

  • Purpose: Most of the bilateral structures in our body are not perfectly balanced, such that one side is preferred than the other or it has physiological superiority. Eyes also have an imbalance; the eye with sensory and motional superiority compared to the other is called dominant eye. Authors of this study focused on analyzing the correlation between the dominant eye and levator palpebrae superioris muscle. Methods: The subject of this study was 42 patients with no ptosis and with no past history of blepharoplasty. Hand dominance was identified through questionnaire and dominant eye was identified by hole-in-the-card dominance test (Dolman's test) in all patients. The function of levator palpebrae superioris muscle was measured by MLD (marginal limbal distance). During the measuring procedure, frontalis muscle was not inhibited to avoid the eyelid skin hooding. Results: Out of 42 patients, 27 patients (64.3%) were right ocular dominant, 15 patients (35.7%) were left ocular dominant, 36 patients (85.7%) were right hand dominant and 4 patients (9.5%) were left hand dominant. Out of 27 right ocular dominant patients, right MLD was larger than the left in 26 patients (96.3%). It was larger in average of 0.47 mm (p<0.001) in 27 right ocular dominant patients. Also, left MLD was larger than the right in 11 patients (73.3%) out of 15 left ocular dominant patients. It was larger in average of 0.57 mm (p=0.003) in 27 left ocular dominant patients. MLD on the side of the dominant eye was larger in average of 0.50 mm (p<0.001) than the MLD of non-dominant eye side. Right MLD was larger than the left in average of 0.28mm (p=0.010) in right hand dominant patients, and left MLD was larger than the right in average of 1.15 mm (p=0.025) in left hand dominant patients. Conclusion: The function of levator palpebrae muscle differs in right and left, and the difference correlates with the dominant eye. Also, the function of levator palpebrae muscle is stronger in the dominant eye. We were able to present statistical evidence regarding the difference of the function in right and left levator palpebrae muscle. This may be a factor worth consideration in terms of balancing the eyes during the blepharoplasty.
