Parameter Estimation and Analysis of Deepwater Design Wave in Marginal Seas around Korea (한국 연안 심해 설계파의 매개변수 추정 및 분석)

  • Long term wave climate of both extreme and operational wave height is essential for planning and designing coastal structures. Since the availability of the field wave data for the waters around Korean peninsula is limited to provide a reliable wave statistics, the wave climate information has been generated by means of long-term wave hindcasting using available meteorological data. In this paper, a set of deep water wave data obtained from KORDI(2003) were analyzed for extreme wave heights. These wave data at 67 stations off the Korean coast from 1979 to 1998 were arranged in the 16 directions. The probability distributions considered in this research were the FT-I and Weibull distribution. For each of these distributions, the method proposed by Goda(2004) was applied to estimate the parameters. For judgment of best fitting, MIR criterion proposed by Goda and Gobune(1990) was used. FT-I distribution which best fits to the 886 data, while Weibull(k=0.75) 81 data, Weibull(k=1.00) 105 data.

  • Wireless access in vehicle environment (WAVE) communication is currently being researched as core wireless communication technologies for cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). WAVE consists of both vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication, which refers to communication between vehicles, and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication, which refers to the communication between vehicles and road-side stations. V2I has a longer communication range than V2V, and its communication range and reception rate are heavily influenced by various factors such as structures on the road, the density of vehicles, and topography. Therefore, domestic environments in which there are many non-lines of sight (NLOS), such as mountains and urban areas, require optimized communication channel modeling based on research of V2I propagation characteristics. In the present study, the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) was measured on both an experience road and a test road, and the large-scale characteristics of the WAVE communication were analyzed using the data collected to assess the propagation environment of the WAVE-based V2I that is actually implemented on highways. Based on the results of this analysis, this paper proposes a WAVE communication channel model for domestic public roads by deriving the parameters of a dual-slope logarithmic distance implementing a two-ray ground-reflection model.

Service Coverage Enhancement due to Output Power of Korean Land-based DGPS (국내 DGPS 내륙 기준국의 출력 증강에 따른 서비스 영역 분석)

  • The DGPS systems that is a GPS augmentation system were installed for ocean- and land-service. The ocean-based reference station of 11 site and the land-based reference station of 6 sites are operating for ocean- and land-service. Although the land-based reference stations provide the output power of 500W, the service shadow regions are occurred due to mountain lands and building area. In this paper, the service coverages for land-based reference stations are analyzed in conditions of output power enhancements of reference station. The service shadow areas are deduced from service coverages of land-based reference stations and ocean-based reference stations. The medium frequency-band wave propagation models are considered as DGPS wave propagation model. The service coverages are analyzed by considering the compensated ground surface-conductivity.

  • This paper presents the development of dynamically combined Typhoon generated surge-tide-wave numerical model which is applicable from deep to shallow water. The dynamically coupled model consists of hydrodynamic module and wind wave module. The hydrodynamic module is modified from POM and wind wave module is modified from WAM to be applicable from deep to shallow water. Hydrodynamic module computes tidal currents, sea surface elevations and storm surges and provide these information to wind wave module. Wind wave mudule computes wind waves and provides computed information such as radiation stress, sea surface roughness and shear stress due to winds. The newly developed model was applied to compute the surge, tide and wave fields by typhoon Maemi. Verification of model performance was made by comparison of measured waves and tide data with simulated results.

  • Big swell is often generated offshore and damages the coasts after travelling long distance. In order to prevent coastal damages, wave measurements should be performed offshore as well as coastal waters around Korea. However, in-situ wave measurements are difficult because of high expense of instruments and high risk of operation. Satellite wave measurements using altimeter make it possible to get wave information from the sea difficult to execute field measurements such as the center of the East Sea or exclusive territorial waters. In order to use wave information from the satellite altimeter, it is important to verify altimeter wave data with in-situ data. This paper examines significant wave height data observed by ENVISAT altimeter by comparing wave data observed at Ieodo station.

  • For design of maritime structure, it is necessary to evaluate the effect and stability of the structure against wave action. Laboratory model experiments and their empirical formulas are mainly used to estimate those at present, although empirical formulas have a problem of accuracy and hydraulic experiments of cost and duration. In addition, performance-based design, which may be popularized as a new design concept in the near future, requires much more information than that obtained by empirical formulas and laboratory tests. Thus, numerical simulation may become more important hereafter for structure design. (omitted)

  • A wave buoy commonly used for measurements in marine environments is very useful for measurements on the sea surface wind and waves. However, it is constantly exposed to external forces such as typhoons and the risk of accidents caused by ships. Therefore, the installation and maintenance charges are large and constant. In this study, we developed a system for monitoring the sea surface wind using marine radar to provide spatial and temporal information about sea surface waves at a small cost. The essential technology required for this system is radar signal processing. This paper also describes the analytical process of using it for monitoring the sea surface wind. Consequently, developing this system will make it possible to replace wave buoys in the near future.

A Far Field Solution of the Slowly Varying Drift Force on an Offshore Structure in Bichromatic Waves - Two Dimensional Problems

  • A far field solution of the slowly varying force on an offshore structure by gravity ocean waves was shown as a function of the reflection and transmission of the body disturbed waves. The solution was obtained from the conservation of the momentum flux, which simply describes various wave forces, while making it unnecessary to compute complicated integration over a control surface. The solution was based on the assumption that the frequency difference of the bichromatic incident waves is small and its second order term is negligible. The final solution is expressed in term of the reflection and transmission waves, i.e. their amplitudes and phase angles. Consequently, it shows that not only the amplitudes but also the phase differences make critical contributions to the slowly varying force. In a limiting case, the slowly varying force solution gives the one of the mean drift force, which is only dependent on the reflection wave amplitude. An approximation is also suggested in a case where only the mean drift force information is available.

  • Wireless communication technology (WAVE) for vehicles, which is the core technology behind the next-generation intelligent transport system (C-ITS), is used to deliver information about vehicles to prevent traffic accidents and traffic situations that may arise between vehicles and infrastructure. Similar traffic issues often arise in marine scenarios. Currently, AIS is being used as a means of transmitting information such as the status of relative vessels, but research is being carried out to solve problems with AIS such as overloading by applying wireless communication technology for vehicles to the sea. In this study, a collision warning system suitable for small-sized vessels was developed based on the marine application of WAVE for vehicles verified through prior research, and the adequacy of this collision warning system was reviewed through a practical test. It is expected that this system will contribute greatly to future e-Navigation applications or self-driving ships as well as to preventing marine accidents.

Speed-Power Performance Analysis of an Existing 8,600 TEU Container Ship using SPA(Ship Performance Analysis) Program and Discussion on Wind-Resistance Coefficients

  • This study discusses data collection, calculation of wind and wave-induced resistance, and speed-power analysis of an 8,600 TEU container ship. Data acquisition system of the ship operator was improved to obtain the data necessary for the analysis, which was accomplished using SPA (Ship Performance Analysis, Park et al., 2019) in conformation with ISO15016:2015. From a previous operation profile of the container, the standard operating conditions of mean draft were 12.5 m and 13.6 m, which were defined with the mean stowage configuration of each condition. Model tests, including the load-variation test, were conducted to validate new ship performance and for the speed-power analysis. The major part of the added resistance of container ship is due to the wind. To check the reliability of wind-resistance calculation results, the resistance coefficients, added resistance, and speed-power analysis results using the Fujiwara regression formula (ISO15016:2015) and Computational fluid dynamics (Ryu et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2017) analysis were compared. Wind speed and direction measured using an anemometer were used for wind-resistance calculation and the wave resistance was calculated using the wave-height and direction-data from weather information. Also, measured water temperature was used to calculate the increase in resistance owing to the deviation in water density. As a result, the SPA analysis using measured data and weather information was proved to be valid and able to identify the ship's resistance propulsion performance. Even with little difference in the air-resistance coefficient value, both methods provide sufficient accuracy for speed-power analysis. The differences were unnoticeable when the speed-power analysis results using each method were compared. Also, speed-power analysis results of the 8,600 TEU container ship in two draft conditions show acceptable trends when compared with the model test results and are also able to show power increase owing to hull fouling and aging. Thus, results of speed-power analysis of the existing 8,600 TEU container ship using the SPA program appropriately exhibit the characteristics of speed-power performance in deal conditions.
