Experimental Comparison of the Wave Force on Crown Wall of Sloping Breakwater Armored with Tetrapods under Obliquely Incident Waves (경사입사 시 테트라포드로 피복된 경사제 상부구조물에 작용하는 파력 비교 실험)

  • Physical experiments have been performed in a wave basin to investigate change of the wave loading on the crown wall under obliquely incident wave conditions. The measurement was carried out with wave incidence angle of 0, 15, 30 and 45°. The pressure transducers were placed on the front and bottom face of the crown wall to obtain horizontal and uplift force as well. It was found that both the horizontal and vertical force decreases with the incidence angle. Based on the analysis of the experimental data, a formula was suggested to estimate the reduction rate of horizontal and vertical forces under obliquely incident waves.

  • Since risers have to be operated without being replaced during the design life time after installation, fatigue evaluation as well as strength analysis should be performed. The fatigue life of the riser is known to be dominantly influenced by wave loading and vortex induced vibration (VIV) phenomena. The fatigue life evaluation method and the behavior characteristics of the riser by the wave have been done a lot. Even though the VIV is an important source of fatigue damage for SCR, the evaluation method and behavior characteristics by VIV have not been studied relatively. Most of the S / W for calculating VIV fatigue are a semi-empirical model based on various theoretical models and experiments. For better understanding of VIV response, it is necessary to investigate the effect of parameters which affects the analysis result. This paper summarizes the results of parametric study performed to enhance the understanding of relationship between each parameter and fatigue analysis result.

  • Capsize and sinking of a coastal car ferry has occurred in a Korean offshore area and has caused hundreds of human casualties. The rapid turn and improper cargo loading are inferred as the main reasons of the accident. It has motivated to develop a new system of cargo securing with improved safety of Korean coastal ferries. This paper provides a new approach regarding cargo securing safety assessment which is purely based on force equilibrium conditions, because IMO CSS is suitable for the ocean-going vessels. The mathematical formulations are presented for the new approach. This paper also introduces a newly developed safety assessment system based on the new approach. Most outstanding features are that it can utilize acceleration data produced from hydrodynamic motion analyses or assumed maximum extents of ship motion components and that securing safety assessment is simultaneously possible for unlimited number of cargoes with finite number of lashings.

A Study on the Riser Fatigue Analysis Using a Quarter-modal Spectrum (사봉형 스펙트럼을 이용한 라이저 피로해석 연구)

  • Oil and gas production riser systems need to be designed considering a wide band quarter-modal analysis which contains low-, wave-, VIV(Vortex induced vibration) frequencies. The VIV can be separated into cross-flow(CF) and in-line(IL) components. In this study, the various idealized tri- and quarter-modal spectra are suggested to analyze fatigue damage on the production riser system. In order to evaluate the fatigue damage increment caused by the IL's motion, tri- and quarter-modal spectral fatigue damages are calculated in time domain. And the fatigue damage calculated from two different modal spectra are compared quantitatively. Then the suitability of existent wide band fatigue damage models for quarter modal spectrum was evaluated by comparison of frequency domain calculation and time domain calculation. The result show that although spectral density of IL motion is not remarkable in quantity, the effect on the fatigue damage is significant and existent fatigue damage models are not adequately estimating damage by quarter-modal spectra.

  • In this study, the extreme sloshing pressure was predicted using various statistical models: three-parameter Weibull distribution, generalized Pareto distribution, generalized extreme value distribution, and three-parameter log-logistic distribution. The estimation of sloshing impact pressure is important in design of liquid cargo tank in severe sea state. In order to get the extreme values of local impact pressures, a lot of model tests have been carried out and statistical analysis has been performed. Three-parameter Weibull distribution and generalized Pareto distribution are widely used as the statistical analysis method in sloshing phenomenon, but generalized extreme value distribution and three-parameter log-logistic distribution are added in this study. Additionally, statistical distributions are fitted to peak pressure data using three different parameter estimation methods. The data were obtained from a three-dimensional sloshing model text conducted at Seoul National University. The loading conditions were 20%, 50%, and 95% of tank height, and the analysis was performed based on the measured impact pressure on four significant panels with large sloshing impacts. These fittings were compared by observing probability of exceedance diagrams and probability plot correlation coefficient test for goodness-of-fit.

  • This paper addresses details of wave load nonlinearity effect on stress RAO and damage ratio using component stochastic fatigue analysis. Traditional spectral fatigue analysis for ship structure is based on linear theory; however, there are a number of nonlinearity sources. Especially loading nonlinearity, such as hydrodynamic pressure applying to ship side and gravity changes due to roll and pitch motion, is thought to critically violate the linearity assumption of spectral fatigue analysis, which involves stress RAO as linear parameter. The main focus is placed on how to idealize complicated characteristics of loading nonlinearity and how to implement the nonlinear bias to linear spectral fatigue analysis.

SCFs in offshore two-planar tubular TT-joints reinforced with internal ring stiffeners

  • The majority of tubular joints commonly found in offshore jacket structures are multi-planar. Investigating the effect of loaded out-of-plane braces on the values of the stress concentration factor (SCF) in offshore tubular joints has been the objective of numerous research works. However, due to the diversity of joint types and loading conditions, a number of quite important cases still exist that have not been studied thoroughly. Among them are internally ring-stiffened two-planar TT-joints subjected to axial loading. In the present research, data extracted from the stress analysis of 243 finite element (FE) models, verified against available numerical and experimental data, was used to study the effects of geometrical parameters on the chord-side SCFs in two-planar tubular TT-joints reinforced with internal ring stiffeners subjected to two types of axial loading. Parametric FE study was followed by a set of nonlinear regression analyses to develop six new SCF parametric equations for the fatigue analysis and design of axially-loaded two-planar TT-joints reinforced with internal ring stiffeners.

Semi-active control of ship mast vibrations using magneto-rheological dampers

  • On marine vessels, delicate instruments such as navigation radars are normally mounted on ship masts. However the vibrations at the top of mast where the radar is mounted often cause serious deterioration in radar-tracking resolution. The most serious problem is caused by the rotational vibrations at the top of mast that may be due to wind loading, inertial loading from ship rolling and base excitations induced by the running propeller. This paper presents a method of semi-active vibration control using magneto-rheological (MR) dampers to reduce the rotational vibration of the mast. In the study, the classical optimal control algorithm, the independent modal space control algorithm and the double input - single output fuzzy control algorithm are employed for the vibration control. As the phenomenological model of an MR damper is highly nonlinear, which is difficult to analyse, a back- propagation neural network is trained to emulate the inverse dynamic characteristics of the MR damper in the analysis. The trained neural network gives the required voltage for each MR damper based on the displacement, velocity and control force of the MR damper quickly. Numerical simulations show that the proposed control methods can effectively suppress the rotational vibrations at the top of mast.

A Numerical Analysis on Acoustic Radiation Efficiency of One Side-Wetted Rectangular Mindlin Plate with Simply Supported Boundaries (Mindlin 판 이론을 적용한 단순지지 단면 접수평판의 음향방사효율 수치해석)

  • Acoustic radiation efficiency is a crucial factor to estimate Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) of ships accurately. This paper describes a numerical method to analyse acoustic radiation efficiency of one side-wetted rectangular Mindlin plate with simply supported boundaries excited by a harmonic point force. Transverse displacements of plate and acoustic radiation pressures are evaluated by the mode superposition method. The acoustic radiation efficiencies analyzed by both Mindlin and thin plate theories show little differences at monopole and corner modes of low frequency regions but relatively large differences at edge and critical modes of high frequency regions. Especially, the critical frequency with the highest acoustic radiation efficiency evaluated by the Mindlin plate theory is higher than that of thin plate theory. In addition, the acoustic loading effect of fluid also increases bending wave-number of plate and its critical frequency. Finally, the acoustic radiation characteristics of plates with different aspect ratios and thicknesses through numerical analyses are investigated and discussed.
