  • HNS accidents involve large-scale fires and explosions, causing numerous human casualties and extreme environmental pollution in the surrounding area. The widespread diffusion of effects should be prevented through rapid decision making. In this study, a high-quality, standardized, and digitized HNS accident databases has been generated based on the HNS standard code proposed. Furthermore, the HNS Accident Tracking System (HATS) was applied and implemented to allow for systematic integration management and sharing. In addition, statistical analysis was performed on 76 cases of domestic HNS accident data collected over 23 years using HATS. In Korea, an average of 3.3 HNS accidents occurred each year and major HNS accident factors were Springs (41 %), Aprons (51 %), Chemical Carriers (49 %), Crew's Fault (45 %) and Xylenes (12 %). (The number in parentheses is the percentage of HNS accident factors for each HNS accident classification)

  • Since the IB (Immersed Boundary) method, which can perform coupling analysis with objects and fluids having an impermeable boundary of arbitrary shape on a fixed grid system, has been developed, the IB method in various CFD models is increasing. The representative IB methods are the directing-forcing method and the ghost cell method. The directing-forcing type method numerically satisfies the boundary condition from the fluid force calculated at the boundary surface of the structure, and the ghost-cell type method is a computational method that satisfies the boundary condition through interpolation by placing a virtual cell inside the obstacle. These IB methods have a disadvantage in that the computational algorithm is complex. In this study, the simplified immersed boundary (SIB) method enables the analysis of temporary structures on a fixed grid system and is easy to expand to three proposed dimensions. The SIB method proposed in this study is based on a one-field model for immiscible two-phase fluid that assumes that the density function of each phase moves with the center of local mass. In addition, the volume-weighted average method using the density function of the solid was applied to handle moving solid structures, and the CIP method was applied to the advection calculation to prevent numerical diffusion. To examine the analysis performance of the proposed SIB method, a numerical simulation was performed on an object falling to the free water surface. The numerical analysis result reproduced the object falling to the free water surface well.

  • Annual power consumption of our country is positioned in the upper percentile in the world, and because the proportion of fossil power generation is high, which ranks the 10th $CO_2$ emission country. In this regard, government has established and is implementing the National Energy Basic Plan to realize to get out of fossilization in energy supply while focusing on securing the technology for renewable energy as well as its commercialization in order to reduce greenhouse gas. Resource recovery technology for deep seawater thermal energy which is one of renewable energies is newly getting attention domestically as well as in overseas for securing resources and environmental improvement as a core technology for multilateral use of marine resources for low carbon and green growth. Economic feasibility analysis was conducted for the research and development as follows on the use of ocean thermal energy conversion and seawater air conditioning. First, in the case of power generation using deep seawater and warm discharge water from ocean thermal energy conversion plant of 1MW level, it is judged that the economic feasibility is insufficient but the feasibility will be significantly improved if we consider not only power generation but also drinking water and certified emission reduction by developing the power plant to the size for commercialization. Second, the economic feasibility for the use of deep seawater as air conditioning for the power plant of 1,000RT level turned out to be very good. Especially, when we consider certified emission reduction, it will be possible to secure sufficient economic feasibility. When we use it in connection with ocean thermal energy conversion, water conversion and agricultural and fishery use, it is judged that economic ripple effect will be significant and therefore it will be necessary to conduct research and development for early commercialization, distribution and diffusion of deep seawater energy.

  • This study analyzes a general pattern of the gate operation at the Asan bay seadikes and its effects on salinity. The coefficient of determination between precipitation and released freshwater from gate operation turns out to be 0.77-0.89. A stratification is not shown in the analysis of the salinity in upper and lower layers at the Asan bay because of strong tidal effects, and the coefficient of determination between runoff and salinity is in the range of 0.49-0.62 except station Daesan 4. Salinity observations from 8 stations show mean and standard deviation are highly correlated (coefficient of determination=0.9936), and both mean and standard deviation are influenced by freshwater. Eventually it is found that stations Asan 2 to 4 and Daesan 1 are within the regions of the freshwater influences.

  • For an accurate prediction of the temperature field induced by heated water discharged into a shallow crossflow, a two-dimensional near-field numerical model is developed. It is based on a 4-equation turbulence model in which the transport equations for mean of the temperature fluctuation squared and its dissipation rate are added to those of a 2-equation turbulence model which cannot give the information of the thermal time scale ratio. Vertical diffusion is also considered by including buoyancy production and turbulence heat flux terms. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simple geometry and the results are compared with existing experimental data and those of the already established 2-equation turbulence model. Numerical results of the model agree with the experimental data better than those of the 2-equation model. The present model also simulates quite adequately the physical characteristics of thermal discharge in the jet entrainment and stable regions.

  • In this paper, an analytical solution of calculating the excess temperature field due to a point heat source is presented in the presence of spring-neap modulation of convective alongshore flow. The basic form of the solution is identical to that given by Jung et al. (2003) but the convective term in the exponential kernel function is extended and a spring-neap variation in the horizontal eddy diffusivity is newly introduced. A set of calculations have been performed to examine the sensitivity of the heat build-up to the change in current fields and turbulent dispersion. Results indicate that the excess temperature field is confined within the tidal excursion distance, while the excess temperature field beyond the distance is mainly controlled by the horizontal diffusion. The heat build-up within the distance is considerably affected by the spring-neap variation in the horizontal eddy diffusivity; the relatively high excess temperature more than 1$^{\circ}C$ is extended further when the eddy diffusivity has spring-neap modulation.

  • For many coastal problems, such as wave transformation, tidal circulation, sediment transports and diffusion phenomena, we resort to numerical techniques. The representative numerical techniques are the method of finite differences and finite elements. The approximate algebraic equations, referred to as finite difference equations(FDEs), are subsequently solved at discrete grid points within the domain of interests. Therefore, a set of grid points within the domain, as well as the boundaries of the domain, must be specified. The generation of grids for FDEs, with uniform spacing, is very simple compared to that of finite elements. However, within a very complex domain, there are few grid generation tools we can use conveniently. Unfortunately, most of the commercial grid generation programs are developed only for finite element method. In this paper, grid generation method using digitizer, with uniform rectangular spacing, are introduced in detail. Didger and Surfer programs by Golden Software are necessary to produce comparatively accurate and simple depth data.

  • Drifter is an equipment for observing the characteristics of seawater in the ocean, and it can be used to predict effluent oil diffusion and to observe ocean currents. In this paper, we design models or the prediction of drifter trajectory using machine learning. We propose methods for estimating the trajectory of drifter using support vector regression, radial basis function network, Gaussian process, multilayer perceptron, and recurrent neural network. When the propose mothods were compared with the existing MOHID numerical model, performance was improve on three of the four cases. In particular, LSTM, the best performed method, showed the imporvement by 47.59% Future work will improve the accuracy by weighting using bagging and boosting.

  • Due to the natural increase of human population and the concentration of industrial complexes to coastal area, the uses of nearshore area were increased drastically, and the tendency will not stop for a while. Therefore, the loss of human life and property damages of the present days for a disaster of the same magnitude should be heavy as compared to those of the past. For the better utilization of the sea and the prevention of the frequent marine natural and man-made disaster, and for the preparedness for the ocean pollutions, through ocean researches are required. the circulation, tidal currents, storm surges, sea surface wind, waves and sea fogs of the Yellow Sea should be investigated first from the oceanographic point of view, and then the dispersion and diffusion of spilled oil and pollutants, beach erosion, red tide, and longterm sea level oscillations can be studied. International cooperation is crucial for the investigation of the sea because of the temporal and geographic scales of the oceanic phenomina.

  • Corrosion of steel embedded in concrete is one of the foremost factors that affect the durability of concrete structures in marine environments. This paper presents an application technique of anode-ladder-system to evaluate corrosion behaviours of marine concrete structure. In order to investigate the behaviours quantitatively, the measurement of potential and current was performed on the concrete elements subjected to the penetration and diffusion of chloride ions. The main variable was the heights from seawater level; namely 3.7, 6.0 and 8.2 m. As a result of the monitoring, it was found that the corrosion characteristics differently behaved with the increasing height. Additionally, through migration test, the relationship between compressive strength of concrete and diffusivity of chloride ions was observed. It is suggested, ultimately, that in order to reduce or mitigate steel corrosion, both appropriate concrete cover depth and high-quality of concrete in early ages should be done.
