As a basic study for establishing the input conditions of a forecasting/estimating model, used for deep-sea water drainage to the ocean, this study was carried out as follows: 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads into the developing region of deep sea water in the East Sea, Korea, 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical water temperature, and salinity distribution, 3) 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analyze the physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into this study area was estimated at about $462.7{\times}103 m\^3/day$ of daily mean in 2002. Annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN, and TP were estimated at 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day, and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current normally shows 20-40cm/sec of current velocity at the surface layer, and it decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We also found a stratification condition at around 30m water depth in the observation area. The differences in water temperature and salinity, between the surface layer and the bottom layer, were about 18 C and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found a definite trend of 34 psu salinity water mass in the deep sea region.
Most underwater acoustic arrays for low frequency operation are deployed vertically, but a mid-range frequency horizontal array system is being developed by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). The horizontal array platform is deployed underwater and kept in place by weather vaning mooring. This is essential because it is nearly impossible to keep a submerged body at a given position in the water without any external force. Hence, the horizontal array platform can maintain the desired position in the presence of a weak tidal current. The objective of this study is to design an underwater platform that can maintain its horizontal position in a weak current. First, the authors investigated various virtual models, selected one of the models, and performed a small model test of the selected model at a basin. We calculated the external forces associated with the 2D motion, and then we conducted a large basin test followed by a circulation water channel test for the manufactured array platform. The results of the simplified 2D motion calculation essentially matched the results of the underwater test.

This paper dealt with the optimal design of a follow current disconnector for DC arresters used in electric traction vehicles. The disconnector separates the ground lead from an arrester to prevent a line-to-ground fault of an aged arrester and should not affect the operation and function such as the reference and the clamping voltage of the connected arrester. The designed disconnector is composed of a resistor, a spark gap, and a cartridge. The results showed that the sparkover voltage increased with the gap distance whereas the reference voltage was almost the same as that without the disconnector. The sparkover voltage was 3.95 kV when the gap distance was 0.5 mm. Regardless of the gap distance, the reference and the clamping voltage of the assembled disconnector with an arrester were measured to be the same as those of the arrester alone.
This paper proposes a model based trajectory tracking control scheme for under-actuated underwater robotic vehicles. The difficulty in stabilizing a non-linear system using smooth static state feedback law means that the design of a feedback controller for an under-actuated system is somewhat challenging. A necessary condition for the asymptotic stability of an under-actuated vehicle about a single equilibrium is that its gravitational field has nonzero elements corresponding to non-actuated dynamics. To overcome this condition, we propose a continuous time-varying control law based on the direct estimation of vehicle dynamic variables such as inertia, damping and Coriolis & centripetal terms. This can work satisfactorily under commonly encountered uncertainties such as an ocean current and parameter variations. The proposed control law cancels the non-linearities in the vehicle dynamics by introducing non-linear elements in the input side. Knowledge of the bounds on uncertain terms is not required and it is conceptually simple and easy to implement. The controller parameter values are designed using the Taguchi robust design approach and the control law is verified analytically to be robust under uncertainties, including external disturbances and current. A comparison of the controller performance with that of a linear proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and sliding mode controller are also provided.

Herein, we report meaningful and selective review of the progress made on 'Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV)' and 'Vortex Induced Motion (VIM)' of 'Structures of Specific Shapes (SoSS)' subjected to steady uniform flow and of relevance to/in marine structures. Important and critical elements of the numerical methods, experimental methods, and physical ideas are listed and analysed critically and the limitations of the current state of art of VIV/VIM are discussed in-detail. Our focus and aim are to analyse the existing researches with respect to the application in analyses, design and production of marine structures and the reported reviews centre on these only. We identify the critical and important issues that exist in the current literature and utilise these issues to highlight the challenges that need to be tackled to design and develop new age marine structures that can exist and operate safely in the areas of dominance by the VIV/VIM. Finally, we also identify some areas for future scope of research on VIV/VIM.
The water quality in Yongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex. The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to build ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D model baroclinic model which considers tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most applicable on appearing the current system of the stratificated Yongil Bay difference of density. Form the results of simulation considered tidal current only, it can be clarified that the water body flows in the inner bay through the bottom layer and flows out the outer bay through the surface layer in Yongil Bay. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the thermal discharge form POSCO have a little effect on the current system in Yongil Bay, but the diffusion of heat and salt has an important effect upon the formation of the density stratification of the water quality distribution is closely related with the current structure characteristics as well as the tidal residual current system in Yongil Bay.
The water quality in Yeongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to built ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D baroclinic model considered tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most appliable on the Yongil Bay where current flows slowly and the flow direction is varied by depths. From the results of simulation considered tidal current only, It am be clearly said the water in Yongil Bay flows in through the surface layer and flows out through the bottom layer. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the heated discharge from POSCO have little effect on the current structure in Yonggil Bay, but have and important effect upon the density structure by diffusion of heat and salt. And the water quality distribution is closely related with the current structure characteristics as well as the tidal residual current system.

According to numerical experiments, the Sokcho Eddy is produced at $37
5~39.0^{\circ}N$ by strong offshore winds, whereas the Ulleung Eddy is produced at $35~37^{\circ}N$ by an inflow variation of the Tsushima Current. These locations compare well with visual observations. The nonlinear 1$1/2$-layer model showed that most of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) driven by the Tsushima Current form the Ulleung Eddy that is larger and stronger than the Sokcho Eddy. In contrast, the nonlinear 2$1/2$-layer model showed that most of the EKWC travels further northward due to a strong subsurface current, thereby enhancing the Sokcho Eddy making it larger and stronger than the Ulleung Eddy. The Sokcho Eddy is also produced relatively offshore due to an eastward subsurface current in the frontal region. Using the 1$1/2$-layer model, when the mass of the Tsushima Current decreases, the two eddies are weakened and produce a circular shape. In the 2$1/2$-layer model the EKWC pushes the Ulleung Eddy northward after 330 days, next the Sokcho and Ulleung eddies begin to interact with each other, and then after 360 days the Ulleung Eddy finally disappears absorbed by the relatively stronger Sokcho Eddy. This behavior compares favorably with other visual observations.
The distribution of tidal current and tidal induced residual current, topographical eddies and tidal residual circulation in the waters surrounding the Geumo Island-An Island channel were identified through numerical model experiments and vorticity balance analysis. Tidal current flows southwest at flood and northeast at ebb along the channel. The maximum flow velocity was about 100-150 cm/s in neap and spring tide. During the flood current in the neap tide, clockwise small eddies were formed in the waters west of Sobu Island and southwest of Daebu Island, and a more grown eddy was formed in the southern waters of Geumo Island in the spring tide. A small eddy that existed in the western waters of Chosam Island during the ebb in neap tide appeared to be a more grown topographical eddy in the northeastern waters of Chosam Island in spring tide. Tidal ellipses were generally reciprocating and were almost straight in the channel. These topographical eddies are made of vorticity caused by coastal friction when tidal flow passes through the channel. They gradually grow in size as they are transported and accumulated at the end of the channel. When the current becomes stronger, the topographic eddies move, settle, spread to the outer sea and grow as a counterclockwise or clockwise tidal residual circulation depending on the surrounding terrain. In the waters surrounding the channel, there were counterclockwise small tidal residual circulations in the central part of the channel, clockwise from the northeast end of the channel to northwest inner bay of An Island, and clockwise and counterclockwise between Daebu Island and An Island. The circulation flow rate was up to 20-30 cm/s. In the future, it is necessary to conduct an experimental study to understand the growth process of the tidal residual circulation in more detail due to the convergence and divergence of seawater around the channel.
