Application of unmanned aerial image application red tide monitoring on the aquaculture fields in the coastal waters of the South Sea, Korea (연근해 양식장 주변 적조 모니터링을 위한 무인항공영상 적용 연구)

  • Red tide, causes aquaculture industry the damages in Korea every summer, was usually detected by using satellite, aquaculture information was difficult to detect by using satellite. Therefore, we suggests the method for detecting the red tide using the coastal observation and the product from the unmanned aerial Vehicle. As a result, we obtained the high resolution unmanned aerial Vehicle images, detected the red tide by using the unsupervised classification from the true color images and the simple algorithm from the RGB color images. Compared the previous color images, unmanned aerial Vehicle images were clearly classified the ocean color, we were able to identify the red tide distribution in sea surface. These methods were determined to accurately monitor the red tide distribution on the aquaculture fields in the coastal waters where is established the aquaculture.

  • This paper presents vision-based techniques for underwater landmark detection, map-based localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) in structured underwater environments. A variety of underwater tasks require an underwater robot to be able to successfully perform autonomous navigation, but the available sensors for accurate localization are limited. A vision sensor among the available sensors is very useful for performing short range tasks, in spite of harsh underwater conditions including low visibility, noise, and large areas of featureless topography. To overcome these problems and to a utilize vision sensor for underwater localization, we propose a novel vision-based object detection technique to be applied to MCL (Monte Carlo Localization) and EKF (Extended Kalman Filter)-based SLAM algorithms. In the image processing step, a weighted correlation coefficient-based template matching and color-based image segmentation method are proposed to improve the conventional approach. In the localization step, in order to apply the landmark detection results to MCL and EKF-SLAM, dead-reckoning information and landmark detection results are used for prediction and update phases, respectively. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by experiments with an underwater robot platform in an indoor water tank and the results are discussed.

KOMPSAT Data Processing System: An Overview and Preliminary Acceptance Test Results

  • The optical sensors of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) and Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) aboard the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) will be placed in a sun synchronous orbit in late 1999. The EOC and OSMI sensors are expected to produce the land mapping imagery of Korean territory and the ocean color imagery of world oceans, respectively. Utilization of the EOC and OSMI data would encompass the various fields of science and technology such as land mapping, land use and development, flood monitoring, biological oceanography, fishery, and environmental monitoring. Readiness of data support for user community is thus essential to the success of the KOMPSAT program. As a part of testing such readiness prior to the KOMPSAT launch, we have performed the preliminary acceptance test for the KOMPSAT data processing system using the simulated EOC and OSMI data sets. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the readiness of the KOMPSAT data processing system, and to help data users understand how the KOMPSAT EOC and OSMI data are processed, archived, and provided. Test results demonstrate that all requirements described in the data processing specification have been met, and that the image integrity is maintained for all products. It is however noted that since the product accuracy is limited by the simulated sensor data, any quantitative assessment of image products can not be made until actual KOMPSAT images will be acquired.

  • The COMS, Korea's first geostationary multipurpose satellite program will accommodate 3 kind of payloads; Ka-Band communication transponder, GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager), and MI (Meteorological Imager). MI raw data will be transferred to ground station via L-band link. The ground station will perform image data processing for raw data, generate them into the LRIT/HRIT format, the user dissemination data recommended by the CGMS. The LRIT/HRIT are disseminated via satellite to user stations. This paper shows the COMS LRIT data generation procedure based on COMS LRIT specification and its verification results using the LRIT user station.

Predicting the extent of the volcanic ash dispersion using GOCI image and HYSPLIT model - A case study of the 17 Sep, 2013 eruption in SAKURAJIMA volcano - (GOCI 위성영상과 HYSPLIT 모델을 이용한 화산재 확산경로 예측 - 2013년 9월 17일 분화된 사쿠라지마 화산을 중심으로 -)

  • Mt. SAKRAJIMA in southern Kagosima, japan is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. On 18 August 2013, the SAKRAJIMA volcano recently went into the largest scaled eruption with a huge plume of volcanic ash. Therefore, the concern arises if this considerable amount of ashes might flow into the Korea peninsula as well as Japan. In this paper, we performed numeric experiment to analyze how volcanic product resulted from the SAKRAJIMA volcano has impacted on Korea. In order to predict the spread pathway of ash, HYSPLIT model and UM data has been used and 17th September 2013 has been selected as observation date since it is expected that the volcanic ash would flow into the South Korea. In addition, we have detected ash dispersion by using optical Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite- Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (COMS-GOCI) images. As the results, we come to a very satisfactory conclusion that the spread pathway of volcanoes based on HYSPLIT model are matched 63.52 % with ash dispersion area detected from GOCI satellites image.

Detection and Classification of Major Aerosol Type Using the Himawari-8/AHI Observation Data (Himawari-8/AHI 관측자료를 이용한 주요 대기 에어로솔 탐지 및 분류 방법)

  • Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.

Development of Suspended Sediment Algorithm for Landsat TM/ETM+ in Coastal Sea Waters - A Case Study in Saemangeum Area - (Landsat TM/ETM+ 연안 부유퇴적물 알고리즘 개발 - 새만금 주변 해역을 중심으로 -)

  • The Median Resolution Sensors (MRSs) for land observation such as Landsat-ETM+ and SPOT-HRV are more effective than Ocean Color Sensors (OCSs) for studying of detailed ecological and biogeochemical components of the coastal waters. In this study, we developed suspended sediment algorithm for Landsat TM/ETM+ by considering the spectral response curve of each band. To estimate suspended sediment concentration (SS) from satellite image data, there are two difference types of algorithms, that are derived for enhancing the accuracy of SS from Landsat imagery. Both empirical and remote sensing reflectance model (hereafter referred to as $R_{rs}$ model) are used here. This study tried to compare two algorithm, and verified using in situ SS data. It was found that the empirical SS algorithm using band 2 produced the best result. $R_{rs}$ model-based SS algorithm estimated higher values than empirical SS algorithm. In this study we used $R_{rs}$ model developed by Ahn (2000) focused on the Mediterranean coastal area. That's owing to the difference of oceanic characteristics between Mediterranean and Korean coastal area. In the future we will improve that $R_{rs}$ model for the Korean coastal area, then the result will be advanced.

Distribution of Flood Sediment Deposits using the Seafloor Image by Side Scan Sonar near the Northern Coast of Gungchon-ri, East Sea (Side scan sonar 해저면 음향영상을 이용한 동해 궁촌리 북부 연안의 홍수퇴적물 분포)

  • To analyze the distribution pattern of flood sediment deposits near the mouth of Chucheoncheon (river), side scan sonar images and seafloor sediment properties were investigated in the offshore area within about 50 m deep in water. Based on the analysis result of the sonar images, the seafloor of the study area is divided into three areas of basement, sandy-mud, and dispersed flood sediment. The colors of sonar images in each area are represented by dark black, light grey, and greyish black, respectively. The sediment composition in the grey black area shows 33.73% of gravel, 62.88% of sand, 3.37% of silt, and 0.02% of clay. On the other hand, the composition of the light grey area is 10.31% of sand, 56.42% of silt, and 33.27% of clay. Especially the sediment of the grey black area contains the considerable amount of burned plant fragments in black color, which could distinctly be differentiated from those in the offshore. The distribution pattern of the flood sediment deposits suggests that the land-originated detrital sediments seem to be transported from the Chucheon river into offshore along the shore rather than transversely. In conclusion, the longshore current of the study area is probably dominant to affect the spatial distribution of bottom features.

The Tunnel Lane Positioning System of a Autonomous Vehicle in the LED Lighting (LED 조명을 이용한 자율주행차용 터널 차로측위 시스템)

  • Recently, autonomous vehicles have been studied actively. There are various technologies such as ITS, Connected Car, V2X and ADAS in order to realize such autonomous driving. Among these technologies, it is particularly important to recognize where the vehicle is on the road in order to change the lane and drive to the destination. Generally, it is done through GPS and camera image processing. However, there are limitations on the reliability of the positioning due to shaded areas such as tunnels in the case of GPS, and there are limitations in recognition and positioning according to the state of the road lane and the surrounding environment when performing the camera image processing. In this paper, we propose that LED lights should be installed for autonomous vehicles in tunnels which are shaded area of the GPS. In this paper, we show that it is possible to measure the position of the current lane of the autonomous vehicle by analyzing the color temperature after constructing the tunnel LED lighting simulation environment which illuminates light of different color temperature by lane. Based on the above, this paper proposes a lane positioning technique using tunnel LED lights.

Spatial Downscaling of Ocean Colour-Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) Forel-Ule Index Using GOCI Satellite Image and Machine Learning Technique (GOCI 위성영상과 기계학습 기법을 이용한 Ocean Colour-Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) Forel-Ule Index의 공간 상세화)

  • Forel-Ule Index (FUI) is an index which classifies the colors of inland and seawater exist in nature into 21 gradesranging from indigo blue to cola brown. FUI has been analyzed in connection with the eutrophication, water quality, and light characteristics of water systems in many studies, and the possibility as a new water quality index which simultaneously contains optical information of water quality parameters has been suggested. In thisstudy, Ocean Colour-Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) based 4 km FUI was spatially downscaled to the resolution of 500 m using the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data and Random Forest (RF) machine learning. Then, the RF-derived FUI was examined in terms of its correlation with various water quality parameters measured in coastal areas and its spatial distribution and seasonal characteristics. The results showed that the RF-derived FUI resulted in higher accuracy (Coefficient of Determination (R2)=0.81, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)=0.7784) than GOCI-derived FUI estimated by Pitarch's OC-CCI FUI algorithm (R2=0.72, RMSE=0.9708). RF-derived FUI showed a high correlation with five water quality parameters including Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorus, Chlorophyll-a, Total Suspended Solids, Transparency with the correlation coefficients of 0.87, 0.88, 0.97, 0.65, and -0.98, respectively. The temporal pattern of the RF-derived FUI well reflected the physical relationship with various water quality parameters with a strong seasonality. The research findingssuggested the potential of the high resolution FUI in coastal water quality management in the Korean Peninsula.
