Comparative analysis among deterministic and stochastic collision damage models for oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability

  • The incidence of collision damage models on oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability is investigated considering the IACS deterministic model against GOALDS/IMO database statistics for collision events, substantiating the probabilistic model. Statistical properties of hull girder residual strength are determined by Monte Carlo simulation, based on random generation of damage dimensions and a modified form of incremental-iterative method, to account for neutral axis rotation and equilibrium of horizontal bending moment, due to cross-section asymmetry after collision events. Reliability analysis is performed, to investigate the incidence of collision penetration depth and height statistical properties on hull girder sagging/hogging failure probabilities. Besides, the incidence of corrosion on hull girder residual strength and reliability is also discussed, focussing on gross, hull girder net and local net scantlings, respectively. The ISSC double hull oil tanker and single side bulk carrier, assumed as test cases in the ISSC 2012 report, are taken as reference ships.

Vlasov 보 모델을 이용한 컨테이너 선박의 스프링잉 응답해석 (Analysis of Linear Springing Responses of a Container Carrier by using Vlasov Beam Model)

  • Modern ultra-large container carriers can be exposed to the unprecedented springing excitation from ocean waves due to their relatively low torsional rigidity. Large deck opening on the deck of container carriers tends to cause warping distortion of hull structure under wave-induced excitation, eventually leading to the higher chance of resonance vibration between its torsional response and incoming waves. To handle this problem, a higher-order B-spline Rankine panel method and Vlasov-beam FE model was directly coupled in the time domain, and the coupled equation was solved by using an implicit iterative method. In order to capture the complicated behavior of thin-walled open section girder, a sophisticated beam-based finite element model was developed, which takes into account warping distortion and shear-on-wall effect. Then, the developed beam model was directly coupled with the time-domain Rankine panel method for hydrodynamic problem by using the fixed-point iteration method. The developed computational scheme was validated through the comparison with the frequency-domain solution on the container carrier model in linear springing regime.

LNG 운반선에 대한 수치해 변화에 영향을 주는 요소에 관한 연구 (Research of Elements Giving Effects on the Numerical Analysis for the LNG Carrier)

  • Numerical analysis using the FLUENT is performed for the 138K LNG carrier of the MOERI. In this study, results according to the number and also the type of the grid, different turbulent models, variations of y+ are compared with experiments and computational results from the WAVIS. RSM model gives good result in comparison with other models, and the more the number of grid increase, the better the resistance converges to the constant value. Additionally, it is confirmed that the resistance and wake distributions vary with the change of y+, and O-O type grid yields better wake distributions than that of O-H type. Average velocity distributions and velocity profiles are mainly in accord with experiments and computational results of the WAVIS, however, present results in the region of transom and tip of leading edge of the rudder are poor for the lower velocity components comparing with that of the WAVIS.

  • Many port states such as New Zealand. the USA. Australia and Canada have strict regulations to prevent ships which arrive in their port from discharging polluted ballast water which contain harmful aquatic organism and pathogens. They are notified that transfer of polluted ballast water can cause serious injury to public health and damage to property and environment. For this reason. they perceived that the ballast exchange in deep sea is the most effective method. together with submitting the ballast management plan which contains the effective exchange method. ballast system and safety consideration. In this study, we make an effort to develop optimum ballast water exchange management and in result of that. it provide more convenient and stable process to prepare ballast water management plan for Bulk Carrier.

조파기에 의하여 발생된 선단파의 전개 (On the Evolution of Leading Waves Generated by a Wavemaker)

  • 2차원 수조에서 발생된 선단파의 전개를 고찰하였다. 선단파의 전개는 일반적으로 Schrodinger 방정식으로 표현될 수 있다. 특히 반송파(carrier wave)의 기울기가 커서 비선형성이 중요하게 되면 3차 Schrodinger 방정식이 적절한 수학모형이 될 수 있음을 밝혔다. 수치계산은 Crank-Nicolson 알고리즘을 사용하였고 실험치와 비교하였다. 훈치계산으로 선단파의 전개를 잘 예측할 수 있으며 선단파의 신관는 kh>1.36일 때 가파른 파에서 비선형성에 큰 영향을 받음을 밝혔다.

  • In this paper, we introduce prediction program of HVAC system, HJNOVAC Version 2.0. The developed program adopts both the authentic empirical method suggested by NEBB and acoustic power balancing method. The program provides intuitive pre- and post- processor using modern GUI function to help efficient modeling and evaluation of cabin and HVAC component noises. To verify the accuracy and convenience of the program, we carry out noise prediction of HVAC system for 8,100 TEU Container Carrier and measure the noise levels of cabins during sea trial.

Supramax Bulk Carrier Market Forecasting with Technical Indicators and Neural Networks

  • Supramax bulk carriers cover a wide range of ocean transportation requirements, from major to minor bulk cargoes. Market forecasting for this segment has posed a challenge to researchers, due to complexity involved, on the demand side of the forecasting model. This paper addresses this issue by using technical indicators as input features, instead of complicated supply-demand variables. Artificial neural networks (ANN), one of the most popular machine-learning tools, were used to replace classical time-series models. Results revealed that ANN outperformed the benchmark binomial logistic regression model, and predicted direction of the spot market with more than 70% accuracy. Results obtained in this paper, can enable chartering desks to make better short-term chartering decisions.

Hull-form optimization of a container ship based on bell-shaped modification function

  • In the present study, a hydrodynamic hull-form optimization algorithm for a container ship was presented in terms of the minimum wave-making resistance. Bell-shaped modification functions were developed to modify the original hull-form and a sequential quadratic programming algorithm was used as an optimizer. The wave-making resistance as an objective function was obtained by the Rankine source panel method in which non-linear free surface conditions and the trim and sinkage of the ship were fully taken into account. Numerical computation was performed to investigate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed hull-form modification algorithm for the container carrier. The computational results were validated by comparing them with the experimental data.

  • 경사가 일정한 해안에서 단조파의 쇄파조건을 다룬 Carrier-Greenspan 이논을 일반화시켜 복잡한 실제 지형에까지 적용시킬 수 있게 하였으며 따라서 종래 주로 경험에만 의존하던 쇄파대내의 파낭변형에 이논적 배경을 제공하였다. 포물선형태의 지형을 대상으로 계산하였으며 이들 결과로부터 비선형성이 강한 쳐오름(run-up) 문제를 선형화시킴으로 나타나는 영향에 대하여도 검토하였다.

Development of Strength Evaluation Methodology for Independent IMO TYPE C Tank with LH2 Carriers

  • Given the inadequate regulatory framework for liquefied hydrogen gas storage tanks on ships and the limitations of the IGC Code, designed for liquefied natural gas, this study introduces a critical assessment procedure to ensure the safety and suitability of such tank designs. This study performed a heat transfer analysis for boil-off gas (BOG) calculations and established separate design load cases to evaluate the yielding and buckling strength. In addition, the study assessed methodologies for both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue assessments, complemented by comprehensive structural integrity evaluations using finite element analysis. A comprehensive approach was developed to assess the structural integrity of Type C tanks by conducting crack propagation analysis and comparing these results with the IGC Code criteria. The practicality and efficacy of these methods were validated through their application on a 23K-class liquefied hydrogen carrier at the concept design stage. These findings may have important implications for enhancing safety standards and regulatory policies.
