  • The present study numerically analyzed the dynamic behavior of 3D framed structures subject to impulsive slamming forces by violent breaking waves. The structures were modeled using multiple lumped masses for the vertical projections of each member, and the slamming forces from the breaking waves were concentrated on these lumped masses. A numerical algorithm was developed to properly incorporate the slamming forces into a dynamic analysis to numerically determine the structural responses. Then, the validity of the numerical analysis was verified using the results of an existing hydraulic experiment. The numerical and experimental results for various model structures were generally in good agreement. The uncertainties concerning the properties of the breaking waves used in the verification are also discussed here.

  • Eigen Function Expansion Method(EFEM) and Plane Wave Approximation are employed to study the propagation of linear water waves over trenches. The properties of trapped waves due to depth and ambient current discontinuities and the effect of evanescent modes on wave propagations are investigated. Special attention is paid to the trapped waves, and not only 3-D plots but also B-D plots of wave propagation are presented.

  • In tire presence of incident waves with different frequencies, there are second order sum and difference frequency wave exciting forces due to the nonlinearity of tire incident waves. Although the magnitude of these nonlinear wave forces are small, they act on TLPs at sum and difference frequencies away from those of the incident waves. So, the second order sum and difference frequency waveexciting forces occurring close to tire natural frequencies of TLPs often give greater contributions to high and law frequency resonant responses. Nonlinear motion responses and tension variations in the time domain are analyzed by solving the motion equations with nonlinear wave exciting forces using tire numerical analysismethod. The numerical results of time domain analysis for the nonlinear wave exciting forces on the ISSC TLP in regular waves are compared with the numerical and experimental ones of frequency domain analysis. The results of this comparison confirmed tire validity of the proposed approach.

  • The main object of this study is to develop an accurate and convenient method for the response analysis of offshore structures in real sea states. A numerical procedure is described for predicting the motion responses and tension variations of the ISSC TLP in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach in the frequency domain is based on acombination of the three dimensional source distribution method, the dynamic response analysis method, and the spectral analysis method. Frequency domain analysis in the multi-directional irregular waves is expanded to a time domain analysis by using a convolution integral after obtaining the impulse response by Fourier transformation. The results of the comparison between responses in the frequency and time domain confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

  • Numerical study is carried out to make clear the wavemaking phenomena for a planning flat plate. Through the mumerical computations, some schematic wave patterns are compared with experimental results, for example, such as the bow divergent waves, triangle waves, stern divergent saves, stern cross waves. The characteristic distance of waves is found to be more inconsistent as the incidence angle increases. The comparison was mode between computations and experiments for incidence angles of 5, 10 and 15 degrees. However, a numerical difficulty is found around and behined the trailing edges for more than 20 degree.

  • The hydrodynamic interaction characteristics between multiple floating bodies of semisubmersible type are examined to present the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of the floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves. The numerical approach is based on a combination of a three-dimensional source distribution method, the wave interaction theory and the spectral analysis method. The effects of wave directionality on the wave exciting forces acting on multiple floating bodies in multi-directional irregular waves also have been pointed out.

  • Theoretical studies have been made to analyze combined refraction diffraction of the wind waves propagating on a large scale current in water of varying depth. The governing equation for monochromatic waves was derived through splitting a mild slope equation into two equations. A numerical model is developed using finite difference scheme which is computationally very efficient for modelling large area. Numerical examples concerning the interactions between waves and rip currents over a gentle slope are presented, in which the current effects on the wave diffraction in the caustic region are closely examined.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the upstream waves in front of an advancing arbitrary hull shape in a restricted water channel. Conventionally, in a restricted water channel, shallow water effects are amplified because of the finite water depth and width. When the effects of shallow water and the restricted channel width are severe, upstream waves propagate forward from the fore-body of the advancing hull. In this study, numerical simulations are carried out for the relevant analysis of the flow phenomena by the draft variation of advancing hull in a restricted water channel. Numerical simulations are done with a finite-difference method based on the MAC scheme in a rectangular grid system.

  • The added resistance of a ship advancing in waves can be split into the resistance due to the radiation wave and the resistance due to the diffraction wave. In this study, the former has been calculated by a method based on Maruo's formula. The latter must be calculated by other methods. Ship motion is calculated by the usual strip method. The amplitude of two dimensional far-field waves is calculated using the improved Green integral equation. The present numerical method can be used for the estimation of the added resistance due to the radiation wave since the present numerical result is much smaller than other existing numerical results considered to be overestimated.
