  • We propose an efficient vehicle detection and classification algorithm for an electronic toll collection using the feature which is robust to abrupt intensity change between consecutive frames. The local correlation coefficient between wavelet transformed input and reference images is used as such a feature, which takes advantage of textural similarity. The usefulness of the proposed feature is analyzed qualitatively by comparing the feature with the local variance of a difference image, and is verified by measuring the improvements in the separability of vehicle from shadowy or shadowless road for a real test image. Experimental results from field tests show that the proposed vehicle detection and classification algorithm performs well even under abrupt intensity change due to the characteristics of sensor and occurrence of shadow.

  • Recently, two energy-based response parameters, i.e., the absolute and the relative elastic input energy equivalent velocity, have been receiving a lot of research attention. Several studies, in fact, have demonstrated the potential of these intensity measures in the prediction of the seismic structural response. Although some ground motion prediction equations have been developed for these parameters, they only provide marginal distributions without information about the joint occurrence of the spectral values at different periods. In order to build new prediction models for the two equivalent velocities, a large set of ground motion records is used to calculate the correlation coefficients between the response spectral values corresponding to different periods and components of the ground motion. Then, functional forms adopted in models from the literature are calibrated to fit the obtained data. A new functional form is proposed to improve the predictions of the considered models from the literature. The components of the ground motion considered in this study are the two horizontal ones only. Potential uses of the proposed equations in addition to the prediction of the correlation coefficients of the equivalent velocity spectral values are shown, such as the prediction of derived intensity measures and the development of conditional mean spectra.

  • This study analyzed influence factors and the correlation among pollutants which affect occurrence of leaked pollution based on the long-term runoff flow and water quality investigation results to understand the characteristics of highway rainfall runoff pollution load. According to the result of correlation analysis on TSS (Total Suspended Solid) concentration, anteceded dry days, rainfall intensity, traffic volume and etc. as major influence factors of highway rainfall runoff pollution loads, the correlations were weak or scarce in most items. These results might be attributed that runoff pollutant concentration changes vary severely on changes of rainfall intensity and rainfall duration within rainfall and it is affected by disturbances of vehicles and street cleaning and etc. as characteristics of the highway. While Cu, Fe and Zn which are discharged with high concentrations out of heavy metals showed high correlation with particulate matter, organic matter(COD), nutrient(TN, TP), Ni and Pb showed relatively low correlation in a correlation evaluation by pollutant. Significant correlation with traffic volumes was not shown and TSS concentration even decreased in accordance with increase of the traffic volume. In the comparison with precedent studies, it was considered necessary additional analysis of the effects of rainfall section analysis, road type, disturbances of surface contaminants by vehicles, rainfall and climate conditions, surrounding terrains etc.

  • Based on atmosphere weather data by balloon in Osan and Gwangju area, if icing condition occurs in weather environment of altitude range where helicopter is operated was analyzed in quantitative way. Yearly icing occurrence frequency for daytime during recent three years was average 102 days in Osan, average 91 days in Gwangju. Icing weather environment to highly affect operation of helicopter varies a little according to analysis methods but icing intensity at MDT level was calculated in all the methods, and 14.5~38 times was suggested in Osan; 2.5~30 times in Gwangju. Icing at MDT level was calculated in common in all the analysis methods through wide periods such as Jan., Feb., Mar., and Nov. in Osan. In Gwangju, icing at MDT level was suggested focusing on Jan. only. Therefore, military helicopter developed in Korea is required to strive obtaining certificate of airworthiness about icing condition at MDT level for implementation of perfect operational mission and safe operation.

  • The occurrence of an inclined edge crack in transversely piezoelectric material is analyzed. Concentrated antiplane mechanical and inplane electrical loads are applied at the boundary and crack surface, respectively. The crack surfaces are assumed to be impermeable to the electric field. Using the Mellin transform with the introduction of a generalized displacement vector, the problem is formulated, and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving the equation, the solution is obtained in a closed form. The intensity factors of the stress, the electric displacement, and the energy release rate are obtained for any crack length and inclination angle. These solutions can be used as fundamental solutions and can be superimposed to represent any arbitrary electromechanical loading.

  • PURPOSES : This research aims to estimate the occurrence of hydroplaning on roads based on the road alignment types and rainfall intensity in Seoul. METHODS : Three types of data were used for estimation of hydroplaning in this study. The Inner Circulation Road (12.5 km) to the Bukbu Expressway (7.4 km) in Seoul was selected as the test road and data was collected for road information using a probe-vehicle. Precipitation was observed from Automatic Weather System in Seoul. These data were interpolated by applying Inverse Distance Weighted Methodology for hydroplaning estimation. Finally, the water depth information of the roads was observed using an RCM411 device. RESULTS : This study demonstrated that the cross slope with small-angle-tilt or vertical section with large-angle-tilt are the primary factors causing hydroplaning on the roads. The flow velocity on steep slope is high; however, large drainage lengths result in hydroplaning on the roads. CONCLUSIONS : This result can contribute towards the reduction of car accidents on rainy days. Furthermore, information regarding hydroplaning can be delivered to drivers more rapidly and precisely in the future.

  • The sudden decrease of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity observed by ground neutron monitor (NM) is called a Forbush decrease (FD) event. The intensity time profile of FD event looks like the geomagnetic storm visualized by geomagnetic storm index Dst. Oh et al. [2008] and Oh and Yi [2009] classified the FD events into two kinds by criteria of the overlapping simultaneity of main phase in universal time (UT). The FD event is defined simultaneous if the main phase parts observed by the stations distributed evenly around the Earth are overlapped in UT and non-simultaneous if ones are overlapped in each station's local time (LT). They suggested the occurrence mechanisms of two kind FD events related to the interplanetary magnetic structures such as the interplanetary shock (IP shock) and magnetic cloud. According to their model, the simultaneity of FD depends on the strength and propagation direction of interactive magnetic structures overtaking the Earth. Now the STEREO mission can visualize the emergence and propagation direction of the coronal mass ejection (CME) in 3-dimension in the heliosphere. Thus, it is possible to test the suggested mechanisms causing two different types of FD events. One simultaneous FD observed on February 17, 2011 may be caused by a CME heading directly toward the Earth observed on February 15, 2011 by the STEREO mission. The simultaneity of FD event is proved to be a useful analysis tool in figuring out the geo-effectiveness of solar events such as interplanetary CMEs and IP shocks.

  • Software reliability is one of the most elementary and important problems in software development In order to find the software failure occurrence, the instantaneous failure rate function in the Poisson process can have a constant, incremental or decreasing tendency independently of the failure time. In this study, we compared the reliability performance of the software reliability model using the parameters of Pareto life distribution with the intensity decreasing pattern and the shape parameter of Erlang life distribution with the intensity increasing and decreasing pattern in the software product testing. In order to identify the software failure environment, the parametric estimation was applied to the maximum likelihood estimation method. Therefore, in this paper, we compare and evaluate software reliability by applying software failure time data. The reliability of the Erlang and Pareto life models is shown to be higher than that of the Pareto lifetime distribution model when the shape parameter is higher and the Erlang model is more reliable when the shape parameter is higher. Through this study, the software design department will be able to help the software design by applying various life distribution and shape parameters, and providing basic knowledge using software failure analysis.

  • Seismic isolation technology has a wide application to protect bridges from earthquake damage, a new designed bridge pier with seismic isolation are provided for railways in seismic regions of China. The pier with rocking isolation is a self-centering system under small and moderate earthquakes, and the unbonded prestressed tendons are used to prevent overturning under strong earthquakes. A numerical model based on pseudo-static testing results is presented to evaluate the seismic performance of isolation bridge piers, and is validated by the shaking table test. It is found that the rocking response and the loss of prestressing for the bridge pier increase with the increase of earthquake intensity. Besides, the intensity and spectral characteristics of input ground motion have great influence on displacement of the top and bottom of the bridge pier, while have less influence on the bending moment of the pier bottom. Experimental and numerical results show that the rocking-isolated piers presented in this study have good seismic performance, and it provides an alternative way for the railway bridge in the regions with high occurrence of earthquakes. Therefore, we provide the detailed procedures for seismic design of the rocking-isolated bridge pier, and a case study of the seismic isolation design with rocking piers is carried out to popularize the seismic isolation methods.

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare the effects of the Graston-based massage method and microcurrent application on muscle fatigue after causing muscle fatigue of the quadriceps femoris by applying high-intensity exercise. METHODS: Study subjects (56 healthy subjects in their 20s) were randomized into a microcurrent group (MG), Graston group (GG), and control group (CG). To induce fatigue of the quadriceps femoris, the subjects performed squats 100 times without a break within about 5 minutes. Muscle fatigue was measured immediately after performing squats and 15 minutes after intervention. To measure muscle fatigue, surface electromyogram (EMG) was used to obtain and compare the median frequency. Microcurrent or Graston massage was applied to their quadriceps muscles 15 minutes after performing the squats. RESULTS: Muscle fatigue increased significantly in the vastus lateralis before and after intervention in the Graston group (p<.05), while no significant difference was observed in the rectus femoris and vastus medialis (p>.05). There were also no significant differences in the microcurrent group or the control group. CONCLUSION: Both the microcurrent group and Graston group showed a tendency for increasing median frequency values compared to the control group, but there was no significant difference except in the vastus lateralis treated with the Graston technique. Although there was no significant difference, the Graston technique could be utilized to reduce the occurrence of DOMS by preventing muscle fatigue in clinical practice or sports medicine.
