Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effects of mandibular posterior displacement on the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) by using cephalometric evaluations and to investigate how the surrounding structures are schematically involved. Methods: In this retrospective study, 38 subjects with functional Class III malocclusion and two lateral cephalograms were selected. The first lateral cephalogram was taken with the mandible in the habitual occlusal position, and the second in anterior edge-to-edge bite. Paired t-test was used to analyze changes in the PAS, hyoid bone, tongue, and soft palate, followed by mandibular posterior displacement. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between the amount of mandibular posterior displacement and other variables. Results: A statistically significant decrease was observed in the PAS following mandibular posterior displacement. Along with mandibular posterior displacement, the tongue decreased in length (p < 0.001) and increased in height (p < 0.05), while the soft palate increased in length, decreased in thickness, and was posteriorly displaced (p < 0.001). The hyoid bone was also posteriorly displaced (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the amount of mandibular posterior displacement and the measured variables. Conclusions: The PAS showed a statistically significant decrease following mandibular posterior displacement, which was a consequence of retraction of the surrounding structures. However, there were individual variances between the amount of mandibular posterior displacement and the measured variables.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to fabricate provisional crowns at varying build directions using the digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing and evaluate the marginal and internal fit of the provisional crowns using the silicone replica technique (SRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS. The prepared resin tooth was scanned and a single crown was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Provisional crowns were printed using a DLP-based 3D printer at 6 directions (120°, 135°, 150°, 180°, 210°, 225°) with 10 crowns in each direction. In total, sixty crowns were printed. To measure the marginal and internal fit, a silicone replica was fabricated and the thickness of the silicone impression material was measured using a digital microscope. Sixteen reference points were set and divided into the following 4 groups: marginal gap (MG), cervical gap (CG), axial gap (AG), and occlusal gap (OG). The measurements were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Dunnett T3. RESULTS. MG, CG, and OG were significantly different by build angle groups (P<.05). The MG and CG were significantly larger in the 120° group than in other groups. OG was the smallest in the 150° and 180° and the largest in the 120° and 135° groups. CONCLUSION. The marginal and internal fit of the 3D-printed provisional crowns can vary depending on the build angle and the best fit was achieved with build angles of 150° and 180°.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence, amount, and rate of supraeruption of the maxillary second molar according to sex, age, and history of periodontitis. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from the charts and panoramic radiographs of 65 patients who were scheduled to undergo implant placement at the site of the mandibular second molar. The amount of supraeruption of the maxillary second molar and the alveolar bone level of the neighboring teeth were measured on digital panoramic radiographs. The prevalence was evaluated in each group, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors influencing the prevalence of supraeruption. The amount and the rate of supraeruption were compared between pairs of groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. For all tests, P values <0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: Supraeruption occurred in 78% of the patients. The prevalence of supraeruption was affected by sex, age, and history of periodontitis. The mean amount of supraeruption was 0.91 mm and the mean rate of supraeruption was 0.14 mm/month. The amount and the rate of supraeruption showed no significant differences according to sex, age, or the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (P>0.05). Conclusions: These results show that the amount of supraeruption on the maxillary second molar was similar to the thickness of the enamel on the occlusal surface. When a single implant is scheduled to be placed on the mandibular second molar, supraeruption of the antagonist should be considered.
The hydrodynamic theory of dentin sensitivity states that movement of tubular contents or tubular fluid, in either direction of dentinal tubule, causes dentin sensitivity. A corollary of that theory is that anything that can decrease dentinal fluid movement or dentin permeability should decrease dentin sensitivity. A wide variety of physicochemical methods have been used to reduce the permeability and sensitivity of exposed dentin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of 4 kinds of clinical desensitizing agents(2% NaF, 30% Potassium oxalate, MS Coat$^{(R)}$, Tubulitec system$^{(R)}$) to reduce the rate of fluid flow through dentin in vitro. Sixty coronal dentin discs, 1mm in thickness, were prepared from extracted third molars, free from decay and wear. Dentin discs were treated with 3% EDTA(Tubulicid Plus$^{(R)}$(Dental Therapeutics AB, Sweden)) to remove the smear layer and debris occluding the tubular orifices. After placing the discs in a split chamber device, the rate at which physiologic saline solution could filter across dentin under 150cm $H_2O$ hydrostatic pressure was measured. The occlusal side of the discs were then treated with MS Coat$^{(R)}$, 2% NaF, Tubulitec system$^{(R)}$, and 30% Potassium oxalate, and the filter ratio of the saline solution was measured again. The following conclusions were drawn : 1. Hydraulic conductance which was measured after the application of desensitizing agents was decreased in all the groups(p<0.05). 2. % change of hydraulic conductance was compared but no significant difference was found among the four desensitizing agents(p>0.05). 2% NaF, 30% Potassium oxalate, MS Coat$^{(R)}$ and Tubulitec system$^{(R)}$ decreased the permeability of dentin. It is considered that above four agents can be used in treating the hypersensitive teeth.
This study evaluated the microleakage and interfacial gap between enamel and composite resin under the dry and wet condition of the enamel surface. V shaped class 5 cavities were prepared on the occlusal portion of extracted human molars. Samples were divided into three groups:D group (air dry for 10-15s), BD group (blot dry with moist cotton pellet), and DR group (air dry for 10-15s and rewet with Aqua-Prep F for 20s), Cavities were filled using Aelitefil composite resin after applied One-Step. Microleakage was tested by 2% methylene blue dye solution and the data were statistically analysed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test. Also Enamel-resin interface was observed under SEM. Group BD showed statistically lower microleakage than group D (p < 0.05). but there was no statistically significant difference between group BD and DR (p > 0.05). At the enamel-resin interface, group D showed the gap of $2{\;}{\mu}m$ thickness, but group BD and DR showed close adaptation. In conclusion, the use of blot dry and rewetting agent (Aqua-Prep F) resulted in decreased microleakage and improved adhesion between enamel and resin when using One-Step.
One bottle system was recently developed in order to simplify the clinical skills and save chair time after continuous improvements on dentin bonding agents. There has been many studies to measure the bond strength of one bottle systems but no actual work has been done on micromorphologic study of resin-dentin interdiffusion zone after one bottle system application. To evaluate the bonding patterns of various commercially available one bottle systems to dentin, observation of resin-dentin interdiffusion zone under TEM was performed. Caries-free human third molars within one month of extractions were chosen for the experiments. The molars were sectioned 1mm above the cementoenamel junction and got rid of the root portions. Crown portions of the teeth were sectioned parallel to occlusal surface so that dentin discs of 1mm in thickness were remained. 7 one bottle systems and 1 two bottle system were applied according to manufacturer's instructions and followings were the results. 1. In every experimental groups, cross bandings of collagen fiber were distinguishable and tight bon dings between the bonding agents and dentin were observed. 2. Hybrid layer was clearly observed in ONE-STEP$^{(R)}$, Prime & Bond$^{(R)}$ 2.1, Syntac$^{(R)}$ SC, MAC-BOND II groups but it was not clear in Single Bond, D-Liner Dual PLUS, ONE COAT BOND groups. 3. Electron-density of hybrid layer was uniform in pattern in MAC-BOND II, Prime & Bond$^{(R)}$ 2.1 groups but not so uniform in ONE-STEP$^{(R)}$ group. 4. Electron-dense amorphous phase in most superior layer of the resin-dentin interdiffusion zone was characteristically observed in Single Bond, Syntac$^{(R)}$ SC, ONE COAT BOND groups. It can be concluded that bondings between the dentin bonding agents and dentin can be various in pattern according to their chemical compositions and the condition during applications.

This study was to evaluate the effect of different rinsing times and methods on the accuracy of temporary prostheses fabricated by 3D printing method. Sixty temporary prostheses were fabricated with LCD types of 3D printer(Halot-Sky, Creality, Shenzhen, China) and divided into six groups (n = 10) based on rinsing times and methods. All specimens were rinsed with 99% isopropanol alcohol for 5 and 10 min using three methods-hand washed, ultrasonic cleaning, and automated washing. All specimens were polymerized for 3 minutes under the same conditions. The marginal and internal gaps of specimens were examined using a replica technique. The light-body silicone thickness was measured at 6 reference points(Absolute marginal discrepancy, Marginal, Chamfer, Axial, Angle, and Occlusal gap). All measurements were performed by a stereomicroscope. Reference point images were taken at 100× magnification and then measured using an image analysis program. Statistical analysis was performed using Two-way ANOVA, One-way ANOVA, and the Kruskal-Wallis test (p = .05). The marginal and internal gaps were statistically different according to the rinsing methods and rinsing times(p < .001). In the rinsing time, the temporary prosthesis rinsed for 5 minutes group showed higher accuracy than 10 minutes group. In the rinsing method, the hand washing group showed higher accuracy than the automated washing group.

Autogenous bone grafts from the mandibular ramus are a known source of inadequate bone volume scenarios of the residual alveolar ridge. However, the conventional block-type harvesting technique cannot prevent bone marrow invasion, which can cause postoperative complications such as pain, swelling, and inferior alveolar nerve injury. This study aims to suggest a complication-free harvesting technique and present the results of bone grafting and donor sites. One patient received two dental implants with a complication-free harvesting technique that involves creation of ditching holes with a 1 mm round bur. Sagittal, coronal, and axial osteotomies produced grid-type cortical squares using a micro-saw and a round bur to confirm the cortical thickness. The grid-type cortical bone was harvested from the occlusal aspect, and the harvesting was extended through an additional osteotomy on the exposed and remaining cortical bone to prevent bone marrow invasion. The patient did not suffer postoperative severe pain, swelling, or numbness. After 15 months, the harvested site exhibited new cortical bone lining, and the grafted area had healed to a cortico-cancellous complex with functional loading of the implants. Our technique, grid-type cortical bone harvesting without bone marrow invasion, allowed application of autogenous bone without bone marrow invasion to achieve acceptable bone healing of the dental implants and to regenerate the harvested cortical bone.
In Older to evaluate the effectiveness of 'One-bottle dentin adhesive system', the shear bond strengths of two fourth generation dentin adhesive systems and two One-bottle systems to the occlusal dentin of the freshly extracted third molars were measured by the regulation of the ISO TR 11405. The fourth generation dentin adhesive systems used in this study were Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus and All-Bond 2, and the One-bottle systems were Single Bond and One-Step. The effects of the thickness of hybrid layer and adhesive layer, the diameter of resin tag and the ratio between the diameter of resin tag and that of dentinal tubule were analyzed as the contributing factors of the shear bond strength of dentin bonding systems from the Scanning Electron Microscopic images. The results were as follows: 1. The shear bond strengths of Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All-Bond 2, and Single Bond were 16.98${\pm}$3.40 MPa, 15.10${\pm}$2.77 MPa and 15.05${\pm}$3.18 MPa, respectively. There were no statistical differences(p>0.05). 2. But, the shear bond strength of One-Step were significantly lower than those of the other groups (11.81${\pm}$1.95 MPa, p<0.05). 3. The thicknesses of hybrid layer and adhesive layer of One-Step were significantly thinner than those of the other groups(p<0.05). The differences of the diameter of resin tag(p=0.0685) and the ratio between the diameter of resin tag and that of dentinal tubule(p=0.2401) were not significant among all the material groups. 4. The thickness of hybrid layer and adhesive layer might be considered as contributing factors of the she at bond strengths of dentin bonding systems, but the diameter of resin tag and the ratio between the diameter of resin tag and that of dentinal tubule might not.

Along with traditional goal of 'straightening teeth', today's orthodontics put more and more emphasis on facial esthetics. Naturally, the importance of soft tissue, which dictates one's facial form, is noticed. There have been many cephalometric studies on growth of hard tissue ; however, only a few on that of soft tissue. In Korea, various methods of sampling, measuring and analysing were used to study soft tissue changes, and yet, soft tissue changes along with process of normal growth have not been studied. The author carried out this study as a part of semi-longitudinal study on craniofacial growth and development of Korean children from ages of six to seventeen. 409 boys and 436 girls who'd had no systemic disease for the last three years and shown normal developmental and occlusal status were chosen as subjects. Cephalometric X-rays were taken of each subject, and facial form, lip position & form, nose form, and lip thickness were measured. Mean values and standard deviations were calculated according to age and gender, and figures and tables were drawn accordingly. The following results were obtained: 1. In respect to facial form, boys showed growth for longer period compared to girls. Also, lower face showed higher growth rate than upper face. 2. There was not much change in thickness of upper and lower lips with age; however, they appeared more prominent compared to caucasian children. 3. Nose grew horizontally with age. 4. Horizontal thickness of lower face increased with age, and upper lip thickness at nose base[A-Sn(FH)] showed more growth than anywhere else.
