Obstacle Recognition by 3D Feature Extraction for Mobile Robot Navigation in an Indoor Environment (복도환경에서의 이동로봇 주행을 위한 3차원 특징추출을 통한 장애물 인식)

  • This paper deals with the method of using the three dimensional characteristic information to classify the front environment in travelling by using the images captured by a CCD camera equipped on a mobile robot. The images detected by the three dimensional characteristic information is divided into the part of obstacles, the part of corners, and th part of doorways in a corridor. In designing the travelling path of a mobile robot, these three situations are used as an important information in the obstacle avoidance and optimal path computing. So, this paper proposes the method of deciding the travelling direction of a mobile robot with using input images based upon the suggested algorithm by preprocessing, and verified the validity of the image information which are detected as obstacles by the analysis through neural network.

An Analysis of GPS Station Positioning Accuracy Variations According to Locations of Obstacles (장애물 위치에 따른 GPS 기준국 측위정확도 변화분석)

  • This paper focuses on GPS positioning accuracy variations according to locations of obstacles which surround GPS station. We derived precise coordinates of a GPS station which has a good visibility. Its observation data was rewritten by assuming signal blocking due to obstacle in the elevation angle of $10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$. We processed daily and hourly data for 10 days. In the results using daily data, RMSE was at 10mm level. And RMSE increased to 100mm levels in case of hourly data. As the elevation angle of obstacle increased, the horizontal and vertical RMSE increased, while the height estimates decreased. These results showed the higher the elevation angle of the obstacle increased the loss of large amounts of data by blocking satellite signals direction. In terms of the direction, when the blocking thing was located in the east or west, the coordinate has larger error in the east-west direction. And if signal was blocked at the south direction, the difference between the east-west error and the south-north position error was reduced.

  • The total amount of overseas plant orders obtained by Korean construction companies in 2015 decreased by approximately 51% from the previous year. While a chemical plant sector has the highest portion of the plant orders by accounting for 63% of the plant industry, its orders also decreased by approximately 43% in the same year. Recently, plant construction companies in overseas projects have been dominating the engineering sector owing to their advanced technology, experience, and accumulated knowledge. Therefore, measures must be taken to secure the competitiveness of domestic companies in the global plant industry. Especially, productivity management is an important issue to strengthen the national competitiveness with the development of construction technology. As the productivity influences long term growth, we analyze productivity obstacle factors by using the revised IPA, a technique to measure attribute importance and performance. With the identified factors, we suggest improvement plans and measures to enhance productivity of overseas chemical plant projects. This study will help the companies to come up with medium and long term measures by discussing results and implications it provides.

A New Wheel Design for Miniaturized Terrain Adaptive Robot (험지 주행용 소형 로봇을 위한 바퀴의 설계)

  • Small mobile robots which use round wheels are suitable for driving on a flat surface, but it cannot climb the obstacle whose height is greater than the radius of wheels. As an alternative, legged-wheels have been proposed by many researchers due to its better climbing performance. However, driving and climbing performances have a trade-off relationship so that their driving performance should be sacrificed. In this study, in order to achieve both driving and climbing performances, a new transformable wheel was developed. The developed transformable wheel can have a round shape on a flat surface and change its shape into legged-wheel when it makes a contact with an obstacle. For design of the transformable wheel, the performance of legged-wheel was analyzed with respect to the number and curvature of the leg, and then the new transformable wheel was designed based on the analysis. Contrary to the existing transformable wheels that contain additional actuators for the transformation, the developed transformable wheel can be unfolded without any additional actuator. In this study, in order to validate the transformable wheel, a simple robot platform was fabricated. Consequently, it climbed the obstacle whose height is 2.6 times greater than the wheel radius.

  • For the evaluation of the mobile robot performance in complex environments, the experimental approach in an actual physical environment has been commonly taken. In the physical experimental approach, however, it is quite difficult to define the proper environment for the evaluation due to the lack of commonly agreed characteristics of the test environment. Particularly the number of combinations of types and physical parameters of the obstacles that the mobile robot is expected to deal with is practically unlimited. In an effort to simplify and improve the effectiveness of the evaluation process, we propose an evaluation method using decomposed environmental elements, where we evaluated the performance of the robot for a small group of simple and decomposed obstacle components, for examples projection and slope, instead of a large group of complicated random obstacles. The paper describes a set of simple obstacle models and performance parameters that we have chosen for the effective evaluation process. As an alternative to the physical experimental evaluation approach, in this paper, we used a virtual evaluation environment where the robot and the physical test environment has been modeled using a commercial multi-body dynamics analysis packaged called RecurDyn.

  • An experimental study of the skin friction measurement in a turbulent boundary-layer has been carried out. The skin friction measurements are made using the laser interferometer skin friction (LISF) meter, which optically detects the rate of thinning of an oil applied to the test surface. This technique produces reliable skin friction data over a wide range of flow situations up to 3-dimensional complicated flows with separation, where traditional skin friction measurement techniques are not applicable. The present measured data in a turbulent boundary-layer on a flat plate using the LISF technique shows a good comparison with the result from the previous velocity profile techniques, which proves the validity of the present technique. An extensive error analysis is carried out for the present technique yielding an uncertainty of about .+-.8%, which makes them suitable for CFD code validation purposes. Finally the measurements of the skin friction in a separated region after a surface-mounted obstacle are also presented.

  • Disposable marine product packaging materials such as wooden, Styrofoam, and corrugated cardboard boxes have a very low reuse rate, thus causing the logistics costs to rise and making it difficult to establish a unit load system for marine products. Disposable packing containers to be discarded are accompanied by resource and environmental issues home and abroad. Transportation vehicles for marine products have to return empty without loading different kinds of products after delivery due to the smell and properties of marine products, thus posing as an obstacle to logistics rationalization. In an effort to overcome those limitations, this study examined the stages of transportation including "producer-wholesale market in the producing area-commission merchant-wholesale market in the consumption area-commission merchant-quasi-wholesale market-consumer" and also analyzed the utilization and distribution of disposable packaging materials currently used in the circulation of marine products including wooden, Styrofoam, and corrugated cardboard boxes. Based on the analysis results, the investigator developed a logistics rationalization model capable of promoting semi-permanent reuse and lowering empty vehicle rate on return routes as an alternative to address environmental issues caused by disposable packaging materials, which have been an obstacle to the logistics rationalization of marine products, packaging costs in the process of repeating packing and unpacking at each stage of marine products circulation, and empty vehicle rates on return routes after marine products delivery.

  • Turbulent flow characteristics and heat transfer in a three-dimensional room with a desk-type heat generating obstacle have been investigated numerically by the k-$\varepsilon$ two equation turbulence model. The room mole has one supply opening on the ceiling and two exhaust openings on the side walls. Th results of the flow structure and heat transfer have been represented for air for the inlet velocities in the range 0.1-10.0m/s. As the results of the three dimensional simulations, the relationships between mean Nusselt number and Reynolds number are clarified.

  • This paper presents the harmonics obstacle analysis and countermeasure of electrical consumption a place. Harmonics that can be cosidered as a environmental pollution of the power systems become the cause of the accidents and damages. The responsibility of eliminating the harmonics firstly lies on the generating side. But the original characteristics of the system sush as the harmonic transfer characteristics and the impedance of the system affect each other in the process of the generation and transmission of the harmonic. Therefore it is very difficult to specify clearly the harmonic controlling responsibility, because electric machinery generating harmonics are various in the industrial fields. The output of a inverter has a high harmonic content. There are several ways of minimizing the output harmonic content. One way is to use pulse width modulation techniques within inverter. An alternative method is to combine a number of square-wave inverters. In this research, we measure the harmonic of the countermeasure of electrical consumption a place. The paper present the problem of new harmonic elimination method of PWM inverter fed induction motor system using W-FT series. In the future, the proposed PWM pattern by W-FT series is effective not only to the induction motor but also to the electromagnetic machine such as voltage reglator, UPS.
