  • Recently, a new tailored RF gradient echo (TRFGE) sequence was reported. This technique not only enhances the magnetic susceptibility effect but also allows us to measure local changes in brain oxygenation. In this study, a phantom and cat brain experiments were performed on a 4.7 Tesla BIQSPEC (BRUKER) instrument with a 26 cm gradient system. We have demonstrated that the signal intensity (SI) of the TRFGE sequence varies according to the concentration of susceptibility contrast agent. Three capillary tubes with different concentrations of Gd-DTPA (0.01, 0.05, 0.1 mMOI/l) were placed at the middle of a cylindrical water phantom. Using both TRFGE and conventional gradient echo (CGE) sequences, phantom images of the slices which contain all three tubes were obtained. For the animal experiment, cats were anesthetized and ventilated using halotane (0.5%) and a $N_2O/ O_2$ mixture (2:1), and blood pressure and heart rate were monitored and kept normal. For the observation of tue first pass of Gd- DTPA, imaging was started at t = 0. At t = 8 ~ 12s, 0.2 mMol/Kg Gd-DTPA was manually injected in the femoral vein. The imaging parameters were TRITE = 25/10 msec, flip angle = $30^{\circ}$, FOV = 10cm, image matrix size = $128{\times}128$ with 64 phase encodings and the image data acquisition window was 10 msec. SI-time curves were then obtained from a series of 30 images which were collected at 2 sec intervals using both CGE and TRFGE pulse sequences before, during, and following the contrast injection.

  • direct bone apposition during bone remodelling. To address these problem, we developed a new ceramic, calcium metaphosphate(CMP), and report herein the biologic response to CMP in subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bone. Porous CMP blocks were prepared by condensation of anhydrous $Ca(H_2PO_4)_2$ to form non-crystalline $Ca(PO_3)_2$. Macroporous scaffolds were made using a polyurethane sponge method. CMP block possesses a macroporous structure with approximate pore size range of 0.3-1mm. CMP blocks were implanted in 8mm sized calvarial defect, subcutaneous tissue and muscle of 6 Newzealand White rabbits and histologic observation were performed at 4 and 6 weeks later. CMP blocks in subcutaneous tissue and muscle were well adapted without any adverse tissue reaction and resorbed slowly and spontaneously. Histologic observation of calvarial defect at 4 and 6 weeks revealed that CMP matrix were mingled with and directly apposed to new bone without any intervention of fibrous connective tissue. CMP blocks didn't show any adverse tissue reaction and resorbed spontaneously also in calvarial defect. This result revealed that CMP had a high affinity for bone and was very biocompatible. From this preliminary result, it was suggested that CMP was a promising ceramic as a bone substitute and tissue engineering scaffold for bone formation.

  • All of the crucian carp, Carassius auratus and 50% of common carp. Cyprinus carpio examined in this study were infected with the leeches, Limnotrachelobdella sinensis. Especially, the infection of C. carpio with L. sinensis was the first report in Korea. The gill of C. auratus showed increased hydrophic degeneration of epithelial cell in the filament, blood congestion, hyperplasia of epithelial cell in the filament and lamellae. In the SEM observation, gill filament was transformed to the cylinder form by the lamellae fusion. The lamellae surface showed degeneration, fragmentation of microridges. The extracellular cartilaginous matrix of the filaments was exposed by the collapse of epidermal layer. In the 18S rRNA analysis of L. sinensis, the relationships among these groups are not clear and not concord with their morphological classification.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.

  • Hydroxyapatite[COL] nanocomposite was prepared through coprecipitation process. The chemical bond formation between HAP and COL was confirmed by diffusive reflectance FT-IR and TEM observation. Higher concentration of COL in the preparation induced tiny nanocrystalline composite particles, but lower concentration of COL contributed to form the well developed HAP particles. From TEM observation and ED(Electron Diffraction) pattern the embedded HAP nanoparticles were oriented along the c-axis of COL fiber. In an aqueous system of constant [Ca$\^$2+/] and [PO$_4$$\^$3-/], quantity of soluble COL matrix was doing an important role of controlling the heterogeneous nucleation site for the formation of HAP nanocrystals. Higher concentration of COL will provide more nucleation sites for Ca$\^$2+/ and so the concentration of calcium ions for the total number of active nucleation sites will be getting relatively dilute.

  • The availability of high-resolution satellite images provides precise information without direct observation of the research target. Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT), also known as the Arirang satellite, has been developed and utilized for earth observation. The machine learning model was continuously proven as a good classifier in classifying remotely sensed images. This study aimed to compare the performance of the support vector machine (SVM) model in classifying the land cover of the Delaware River port area on high and medium-resolution images. Three optical images, which are KOMPSAT-2, KOMPSAT-3A, and Sentinel-2B, were classified into six land cover classes, including water, road, vegetation, building, vacant, and shadow. The KOMPSAT images are provided by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and the Sentinel-2B image was provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). The training samples were manually digitized for each land cover class and considered the reference image. The predicted images were compared to the actual data to obtain the accuracy assessment using a confusion matrix analysis. In addition, the time-consuming training and classifying were recorded to evaluate the model performance. The results showed that the KOMPSAT-3A image has the highest overall accuracy and followed by KOMPSAT-2 and Sentinel-2B results. On the contrary, the model took a long time to classify the higher-resolution image compared to the lower resolution. For that reason, we can conclude that the SVM model performed better in the higher resolution image with the consequence of the longer time-consuming training and classifying data. Thus, this finding might provide consideration for related researchers when selecting satellite imagery for effective and accurate image classification.

  • The carbonization behaviors of CFRP fabricated with 2D-woven fabric and matrix phenolic resin have been studied. The changes in dimension were observed in the temperature range of 365-37$0^{\circ}C$ in the thickness direction, 118-12$0^{\circ}C$ in the normal direction each other by TMA analysis. Observation with the optical microscope shows that the formed cracks and pores during the fabrication of CFRP were propagated with the increase of pyrolysis temperaure. New cracks and pores were formed in the pyrolysis temperature range of 400-50$0^{\circ}C$ In line with the formation and propagation of cracks, porosity was increased and density was decreased rapidly in the pyrolysis temperature range of from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to 70$0^{\circ}C$. Therefore heating rate in the carbonization process need to be controlled carefully by intervals.

  • Gellan gum as a natural polysaccharide has good heat resistance, acid resistance and enzymes resistance. However, one of the drawbacks of gellan gum might be the lower mechanical strength. In this work, gellan gum scaffolds were mixed with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microsphere in order to improve mechanical properties. The gellan gum scaffolds with various contents of PLGA microsphere were prepared for the regeneration of disc tissues. To evaluate the mechanical strength of hybrid structure of gellan gum and PLGA microsphere, compression strength of the fabricated scaffolds was measured. MTT analysis, SEM observation, histological evaluation and RT-PCR were performed to confirm the effect on the cell growth and extracellular matrix secretion. As a result, it showed the best cell proliferation and extracellular matrix secretion in gellan gum sponge containing 50% PLGA microspheres. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the hybrid structure of gellan gum and PLGA microspheres was found suitable in regeneration of the intervertebral disc.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the healing process and the distribution of fibronectin in injured condylar cartilage and bone by using LM and SEM. In order to perform this study, 40 male rat, weighing about 250g were selected. Under general anesthesia with Pentobarbital sodium, condylar cartilage and neck bone were resected. Then, the wound was irrigated with saline and closed with 5-0 chromic catgut and 4-0 silk by layer-to-layer suturing. The experimental rats were sacrificed by perfusion with 3% paraformaldehyde at 1st and 4th week after operation. The condylar process and surrounding tissues were cut, demineralized, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin. The histological observation of the specimens in LM level was performed after H-E stain and Azan stain. For localization of fibronectin, immunostaining was achieved by the avidin-biotin complex method. To study the change on condylar surface, the specimens were dehydrated, dried, gold coated and were observed with a scanning electron microscope(Hitachi S-2300). The results were as follows ; 1. The cartilage group and the bone group were repaired with epiphyseal cartilage layer on the cut surface as the normal control group. 2. The cut surface was repaired more quickly in the cartilage group than in the bone group. 3. Chondrocytes, diferentiated during healing, were stained strongly to anti-fibronectin, and fibronectin was supposed to participatein chondrocyte differentiation and cartilagenous matrix formation. 4. Fibronectin was distributed more in the new bone than in the old bone, and the osteoblasts surrounding it were also stained strongly. Fibronectin was supposed to participate in new bone matrix formation. 5. Fibronectin is supposed to be associated with the differentiation, migration and adhesion of chondrocyte and osteoblast and to participate in endochondral bone formation.

  • Very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery provide valuable information on urban change monitoring due to multi-temporal observation over large areas. Recently, there has been increased interest in the urban change detection technique using VHR Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging system, because it can take images regardless of solar illumination and weather condition. In this paper, we proposed a texture-based urban change detection method using the VHR SAR texture features generated from Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM). In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method, the result was compared, visually and quantitatively, with the result of Non-Coherent Change Detection (NCCD) which is widely used for the change detection of VHR SAR image. The experimental results showed the greater detection accuracy and the visually satisfactory result compared with the NCCD method. In conclusion, the proposed method has shown a great potential for the extraction of urban change information from VHR SAR imagery.
