Variation of Muscle Activity and Balance of the Lower Extremity by Deformed in Shoe Out-soles during One-leg Stance

  • Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of shoe sole deformation on the muscle activity and balance of the lower extremities when standing on one foot. Design: Crossed-control group study Methods: A total of 18 healthy adults participated in this study. 9 participants with normal shoe and 9 participants with deformed in shoe out-soles (wear shoes) were included. Muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, fibularis longus and gluteus medius during one leg standing was measured using a electromyography. A balance board was used to evaluate balance ability when standing on one leg. The balance ability when standing on one leg was measured by the sway speed and distance of the center of gravity. Results: Muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, fibularis longus and gluteus medius was no significant difference between groups (P > 0.05). Balance ability when standing on one leg was significantly different from the group wearing normal shoes in all variables related to the sway distance and sway speed of the center of gravity. Conclusions: Through this study, the wear of the outer sole of the shoe indirectly confirmed the effect on the wearer's lower extremity muscle activity and balance ability when standing on one foot. These results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for future studies on shoe wear, lower extremity muscle activity and balance ability.

Utilizing Usability Metrics to Evaluate a Subway Map Design

  • Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of two representative subway map design types, namely a diagram type and a geographical type using physiological metrics, performance metrics, and self-reported metrics, which are representative usability metrics. Background: Subway maps need to be designed in order for users to quickly search and recognize subway line information. Although most cities' subway maps currently use the diagram type designed by Henry Beck, New York City's subway map has recently been changed to the subway map type combined with the geographical type designed by Michael Hertz. However, not many studies on its efficiency are found, and the studies that are available mainly depend on questionnaire surveys or take on a subjective behavioral study type based on experts' experiences. In this regard, evaluation through a more objective method is needed. Method: This study employed usability metrics as a method to evaluate the efficiency of information search targeting the diagram type and geographical type subway maps used mostly as subway maps. To this end, physiological metrics obtained through eye tracking, task completion time, representative metric of task performance, and subjective evaluation metrics were used for the suitability evaluation of subway map designs. Results: In the result of gaze movement distance analysis, no significant difference was shown in the two design types in terms of a process finding a departure station from the starting point and a process finding a transfer station between the departure station and arrival station (destination). However, the gaze movement distance in the process finding the arrival station at the departure station was significantly shorter in the geographical type, rather than in the diagram type. The analysis of task completion time showed a result similar to the gaze movement distance analysis result. Task completion time was significantly shorter in the geographical type, rather than in the diagram type, which is in the process finding the arrival station at the departure station. In other information search processes, no significant difference was shown. As a result of subjective evaluation metrics analysis, no significant difference was revealed in the two design types. Conclusion: An analysis on the two representative subway map design types was carried out via the adoption of usability metrics. As a result, although no significant difference was shown in some information search processes, it was revealed that information search was easier in the geographical type overall. Also, it was found that usability metrics can be effectively used to evaluate the design types of subway maps. Application: The study results can be used to set design direction to offer ease in information search on subway lines. The study also can be used as a method to evaluate a subway map's design type.

개선된 DSM 기법을 통한 경전철 정거장 기능실의 슬림화에 관한 연구 (On Slimming down the Functions Room of Light Rail Transit Stations by Utilizing an Enhanced DSM Method)

  • 오늘날 산업 기술의 발달에 따른 고도화로 인해, 고속철도로 대변되는 전국망 철도 운영과 함께, 도시 내 또는 교외의 단거리 구간을 운영하는 철도사업에 관심이 증대되고 있다. 특히, 일반철도라 불리는 기존의 중전철에 비해서, 후자의 경우는 단거리 운행에 따른 특성으로 경량전철의 형태로서, 보다 작은 규모의 철도차량 및 역사(정거장)으로 운영이 가능할 것으로 기대되고 있다. 또한 철도차량의 무인화 운행 및 정거장 운영 인력의 감축도 주요 관심사로 부상하고 있다. 하지만, 경량전철시스템의 기반 시설인 역사의 경우, 시설을 시공하는데 있어서 기존의 중전철의 설계지침 및 관련법에 의해 건설되고 있다. 따라서 이러한 지침에 의해 건설되는 역사는 소형화의 추구 방향과는 거리가 있게 된다. 경량전철 역사의 슬림화 목적을 달성하기 위해서는 단순히 건축학적 의미 이상의 접근이 필요하다. 왜냐하면 경량전철은 다양한 시스템이 내재된 복합구조의 시스템이기 때문이다. 따라서, 역사의 슬림화를 추구하면서 열차무인운행에 대한 안전성까지 확보하기 위해서는 시스템 설계에서 체계적인 접근이 필요하다. 특히, 경전철 역사에 대한 설계지침 및 관련법이 국내에 현재까지는 없는 실정이다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 연구에서는 역사 기능실의 소형화에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 구체적으로 설계구조행렬(DSM)의 개선된 기법을 제안하였으며, 이의 적용을 통해 역사 기능실 구조설계에서 구성품 통합에 의한 소형화 방법을 연구하였다. 본 연구에서 제안하는 기법을 기반으로 경전철 역사의 기능실 통합을 통한 슬림화 설계를 수행한다면, 향후 경전철역사 건설에서 상당한 시간, 공간, 예산 절감 등의 효과가 기대된다.

Siemens star를 이용한 드론 영상의 품질 평가 (Quality Evaluation of Drone Image using Siemens star)

  • 고정밀 공간정보제작 분야의 활용 측면에서 무인항공사진측량은 촬영된 영상의 정량적인 품질 검증 방법과 인증에 대한 절차와 세부 규정이 미흡한 문제점이 있다. 또한, 영상에 대한 검증 수단이 해상도와 명암의 대비 정도를 동시에 분석 할 수 있는 MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) 분석이 아닌 GSD (Ground Sample Distance) 만으로 품질을 평가하고 있어 유인항공영상보다 품질이 떨어지는 경우도 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 드론 영상 품질 분석에서 MTF 분석의 필요성을 확인하기 위해 Siemens star를 이용하여 GSD와 MTF 분석을 동시에 실시하였다. 서로 다른 드론 기체와 센서로 동일한 해상도로 타겟을 촬영한 영상을 분석한 결과, GSD에서는 약간 상이한 결과를 나타내었지만, 영상의 해상도와 명암의 대비 정도를 동시에 분석할 수 있는 σMTF 수치는 큰 차이를 나타내었다. 이와 같은 결과로 MTF 분석이 보다 객관적이며 신뢰도 높은 품질분석 방법이라고 결론지을 수 있다. 아울러 작업자가 카메라 센서의 성능, 중복도 및 기체의 성능을 적절하게 판단하여 촬영을 실시하여야만 높은 품질의 드론 영상을 획득할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 본 연구는 제한된 기체와 촬영 조건하에서 취득된 영상으로만 분석을 수행한 결과이다. 따라서 향후 관련 분야의 다양한 실험 데이터를 축척하여 지속적인 연구를 수행하면 보다 객관적이고 신뢰성 있는 결과를 도출할 것으로 기대된다

부분 무치악 하악골의 치조골 및 기저골 변화에 관한 방사선학적 평가 (Radiologic assessment of alveolar and basal bone change of partially edentulous mandible)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to propose standard values for alveolar and basal bone in normal adult mandibles, and radiologically analyze the remodeling process of the edentulous mandible by examining molar areas and comparing them to the established normal values. Materials and Methods : Panoramic and CT scans of mandible were performed on 20 normal adults and 20 edentulous or partially edentulous adults. In both groups, arch half diameter and distance of alveolar bone were measured. Also the distance from the mandibular canal to the caudal edges, the buccal and lingual external borders of basal bone, were measured. A statistical comparison between the mean values of normal and edentulous mandibles was carried out in the selected areas. Results : There was evidence of decreasing arch half diameter and distance in the edentulous mandible, but statistically no significant change was seen between the normal and edentulous alveolar bone. There was evidence of decreasing buccal basal bone and increasing in the lingual basal bone in the edentulous mandible. A statistically significant difference between normal and edentulous mandibles was noted in the buccal basal bone. Conclusion: There was an inward and forward atrophic change of the edentulous mandibular molar area compared to the control. CT scanning required the use of sophisticated and expensive procedures to analyze the remodeling process of edentulous mandibles. Consequently, the development and application of a more simplified and objective radiographic procedure for broad and long-term study of remodeling procedures of edentulous mandible was recommended.

Alternation of Topical Heat and Cold for Chronic Low Back Pain : A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial

  • Objectives : This is a pilot study for a large randomized controlled trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of a newly developed contrast therapy device-- alternating topical heat and cold -- for patients with chronic low back pain. The main objective of this study is to confirm the feasibility of the study design. Methods : The design was a randomized, 2-arm, parallel-group, single-blind, placebo controlled trial. Patients in each group received real or sham contrast therapy in an acupuncture point 10 times over four weeks. The primary outcome measure was pain intensity on a 100-mm visual analogue scale (VAS). The secondary outcomes were back-related dysfunction based on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), the Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (RMDQ), and range of motion of lumbar spine based on the modified Schober test (mSchober test), Finger-to-Floor distance (FTF distance), and Finger-to-Thigh distraction (FTT distraction). Results : A total of 30 subjects with chronic low back pain were randomly assigned to a contrast therapy group (n=15) or a sham group (n=15). A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed statistically significant group time interaction for VAS, RMDQ, mSchober test and FTF distance (p<0.05). The treatment group showed significant improvement in pain intensity and functional disability as compared to the sham group. Conclusion : Contrast therapy may be an effective and safe treatment for chronic low back pain.

여자 세단뛰기 운동수행의 일관성과 속도전환계수에 의한 최적의 국면비 (The Velocity Conversion Coefficient and Consistency for the Optimal Phase Ratio on the Performance of the Women's Triple Jump)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the velocity conversion coefficient and invariance for the optimal phase ratio on the performance of the women's triple jump. Methods : Three-dimensional kinematic data were obtained from the three finalists of the women's triple jumper competition at the 2011 Daegu IAAF World Championships. Computer simulations were performed using the biomechanical model of the triple jump to optimize the phase ratio for the longest actual distance for all athletes with altered velocity conversion coefficients. Results : Top elite triple jumpers showed better technical consistency at the phase ratio. Also, no consistent relationship was observed between the loss in horizontal velocity and the gain in vertical velocity across supporting the three phase. In addition, regardless of the magnitude A1, all athletes were optimized with jump-dominated technique. Finally, as the magnitude of A1 increased, the athletes showed better performance. The obtained overall distance jumped showed the longest actual distance when the optimal phase ratio was transferred from hop-dominated to jump-dominated(the step ratio was 30%~31%), and when the optimal phase ratio was transferred from balanced to jump-dominated(the step ratio was 27%~29%). Conclusion : Future studies need to be conducted in order to explore the active landing motion and the inclination angle of the body with the velocity conversion coefficient simultaneously at each supporting phase.

Effects of real-time feedback training on weight shifting during golf swinging on golf performance in amateur golfers

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of real-time visual feedback weight shift training during golf swinging on golf performance. Design: Repeated-measures crossover design. Methods: Twenty-sixth amateur golfers were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: The golf swing training with real-time feedback on weight shift (experimental group) swing training on the Wii balance board (WBB) by viewing the center of pressure (COP) trajectory on the WBB. All participants were assigned to the experimental group and the control group. The general golf swing training group (control group) performed on the ground. The golf performance was measured using a high-speed 3-dimensional camera sensor which analyses the shot distance, ball velocity, vertical launch angle, horizontal launch angle, back spin velocity and side spin velocity. The COP trajectory was assessed during 10 practice sessions and the mean was used. The golf performance measurement was repeated three times and its mean value was used. The assessment and training were performed at 24-hour intervals. Results: After training sessions, the change in shot distance, ball velocity, and horizontal launch angle pre- and post-training were significantly different when using the driver and iron clubs in the experimental group (p<0.05). The interaction time${\times}$group and time${\times}$club were not significant for all variables. Conclusions: In this study, real-time feedback training using real-time feedback on weight shifting improves golf shot distance and accuracy, which will be effective in increasing golf performance. In addition, it can be used as an index for golf player ability.

Morphometric Study of the Nerve Roots Around the Lateral Mass for Posterior Foraminotomy

  • Objective : Morphometric data on dorsal cervical anatomy were examined in an effort to protect the nerve root near the lateral mass during posterior foraminotomy. Methods : Using 25 adult formalin-fixed cadaveric cervical spines, measurements were taken at the lateral mass from C3 to C7 via a total laminectomy and a medial one-half facetectomy. The morphometric relationship between the nerve roots and structures of the lateral mass was investigated. Results from both genders were compared. Results : Following the total laminectomy, from C3 to C7, the mean of the vertical distance from the medial point of the facet (MPF) of the lateral mass to the axilla of the root origin was 3.2-4.7 mm. The whole length of the exposed root had a mean of 4.2-5.8 mm. Following a medial onehalf facetectomy, from C3 to C7, the mean of the vertical distance to the axilla of the root origin was 2.1-3.4 mm, based on the MPF. Mean vertical distances from the MPF to the medial point of the root that crossed the inferior margin of the intervertebral disc were 1.2-2.7 mm. The mean distance of the exposed root was 8.2-9.0 mm, and the mean angle between the dura and the nerve root was significantly different between males and females, at $53.4-68.4^{\circ}$. Conclusion : These data will aid in reducing root injuries during posterior cervical foraminotomy.

마할라노비스 거리를 이용한 압력용기 용접부 용접성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study Evaluating Welding Quality in Pressure Vessel Using Mahalanobis Distance)

  • Robotic GMA (Gas Metal Arc) welding process is one of widely acceptable metal joining process. The heat and mass inputs are coupled and transferred by the weld arc to the molten weld pool and by the molten metal that is being transferred to the weld pool. The amount and distribution of the input energy are basically controlled by the obvious and careful choices of welding process parameters in order to accomplish the optimal bead geometry and the desired quality of the weldment. To make effective use of automated and robotic GMA welding, it is imperative to predict online faults for bead geometry and welding quality with respect to welding parameters, applicable to all welding positions and covering a wide range of material thickness. MD (Mahalanobis Distance) technique was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA welding process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data. To successfully accomplish this objective, two sets of experiment were performed with different welding parameters; the welded samples from SM 490A steel flats. First, a set of weldments without any faults were generated in a number of repeated sessions in order to be used as references. The experimental results of current and voltage waveforms were used to predict the magnitude of bead geometry and welding quality, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and online welding faults. Statistical models developed from experimental results which can be used to quantify the welding quality with respect to process parameters in order to achieve the desired bead geometry based on weld quality criteria.
