SHOMY: Detection of Small Hazardous Objects using the You Only Look Once Algorithm

  • Research on the advanced detection of harmful objects in airport cargo for passenger safety against terrorism has increased recently. However, because associated studies are primarily focused on the detection of relatively large objects, research on the detection of small objects is lacking, and the detection performance for small objects has remained considerably low. Here, we verified the limitations of existing research on object detection and developed a new model called the Small Hazardous Object detection enhanced and reconstructed Model based on the You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) algorithm to overcome these limitations. We also examined the performance of the proposed model through different experiments based on YOLOv5, a recently launched object detection model. The detection performance of our model was found to be enhanced by 0.3 in terms of the mean average precision (mAP) index and 1.1 in terms of mAP (.5:.95) with respect to the YOLOv5 model. The proposed model is especially useful for the detection of small objects of different types in overlapping environments where objects of different sizes are densely packed. The contributions of the study are reconstructed layers for the Small Hazardous Object detection enhanced and reconstructed Model based on YOLOv5 and the non-requirement of data preprocessing for immediate industrial application without any performance degradation.

다양한 화소기반 변화탐지 결과와 등록오차를 이용한 객체기반 변화탐지 (Object-based Change Detection using Various Pixel-based Change Detection Results and Registration Noise)

  • 다시기 위성 영상을 이용한 변화탐지 분석은 인간 활동의 변화를 직접 반영하는 지표이다. 변화탐지는 크게 화소 기반 변화탐지(PBCD: Pixel-Based Change Detection)와 객체 기반 변화탐지(OBCD: Object-Based Change Detection)로 구분한다. 화소 기반 변화탐지는 알고리즘이 간단하고 비교적 쉽게 정량적 분석이 가능해 전통적으로 많이 쓰여온 기법이나 고해상도 영상에서의 화소 기반 변화탐지는 오탐지나 노이즈(noise)가 발생하기 때문에 고해상도 영상에서의 활용도가 떨어진다. 또한, 고해상도 다시기 영상은 취득 당시 센서의 자세나 지형적 특성으로 인해 영상 등록(image registration)을 수행한 이후에도 지형적 불일치가 발생한다. 등록오차(registration noise)라고 불리는 이 지형 불일치는 고해상도 다시기 영상 활용을 위한 공간정보 추출 시 정확도를 떨어뜨리는 방해요인으로 작용한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 등록오차를 고려한 고해상도 영상의 객체 기반 변화탐지를 수행하였다. 이 때, 다양한 화소 기반 변화탐지 결과를 모두 고려한 객체 기반 변화탐지 결과를 도출하였으며 이 과정에서 분할 영상(segmentation image)과의 major voting을 적용하였다. 제안 기법과 화소 기반 변화탐지 결과, 그리고 화소 기반 변화탐지 결과를 객체 기반 변화탐지로 확장한 결과의 비교를 통해 제안 기법의 우수성을 평가하였다.

Moving Object Detection Using Sparse Approximation and Sparse Coding Migration

  • In order to meet the requirements of background change, illumination variation, moving shadow interference and high accuracy in object detection of moving camera, and strive for real-time and high efficiency, this paper presents an object detection algorithm based on sparse approximation recursion and sparse coding migration in subspace. First, low-rank sparse decomposition is used to reduce the dimension of the data. Combining with dictionary sparse representation, the computational model is established by the recursive formula of sparse approximation with the video sequences taken as subspace sets. And the moving object is calculated by the background difference method, which effectively reduces the computational complexity and running time. According to the idea of sparse coding migration, the above operations are carried out in the down-sampling space to further reduce the requirements of computational complexity and memory storage, and this will be adapt to multi-scale target objects and overcome the impact of large anomaly areas. Finally, experiments are carried out on VDAO datasets containing 59 sets of videos. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect moving object effectively in the moving camera with uniform speed, not only in terms of low computational complexity but also in terms of low storage requirements, so that our proposed algorithm is suitable for detection systems with high real-time requirements.

JPEG-2000 Gradient-Based Coding: An Application To Object Detection

  • Image distortions, such as quantization errors, can have a severe negative impact on the performance of computer vision algorithms, and, more specifically, on object detection algorithms. State-of-the-art implementations of the JPEG-2000 image coder commonly allocate the available bits to minimize the Mean-Squared-Error (MSE) distortion between the original image and the resulting compressed image. However, considering that some state-of-the-art object detection methods use the gradient information as the main image feature, an improved object detection performance is expected for JPEG-2000 image coders that allocate the available bits to minimize the distortions on the gradient content. Accordingly, in this work, the Gradient Mean-Squared-Error (GMSE) based JPEG-2000 coder presents an improved object detection performance over the MSE based JPEG-2000 image coder when the object of interest is located at the same spatial location of the image regions with the strongest gradients and also for high bit-rates. For low bit-rates (e.g. 0.07bpp), the GMSE based JPEG-2000 image coder becomes overly selective in choosing the gradients to preserve, and, as a result, there is a greater chance of mismatch between the spatial locations of the gradients that the coder is trying to preserve and the spatial locations of the objects of interest.

Simulation of Deformable Objects using GLSL 4.3

  • In this research, we implement a deformable object simulation system using OpenGL's shader language, GLSL4.3. Deformable object simulation is implemented by using volumetric mass-spring system suitable for real-time simulation among the methods of deformable object simulation. The compute shader in GLSL 4.3 which helps to access the GPU resources, is used to parallelize the operations of existing deformable object simulation systems. The proposed system is implemented using a compute shader for parallel processing and it includes a bounding box-based collision detection solution. In general, the collision detection is one of severe computing bottlenecks in simulation of multiple deformable objects. In order to validate an efficiency of the system, we performed the experiments using the 3D volumetric objects. We compared the performance of multiple deformable object simulations between CPU and GPU to analyze the effectiveness of parallel processing using GLSL. Moreover, we measured the computation time of bounding box-based collision detection to show that collision detection can be processed in real-time. The experiments using 3D volumetric models with 10K faces showed the GPU-based parallel simulation improves performance by 98% over the CPU-based simulation, and the overall steps including collision detection and rendering could be processed in real-time frame rate of 218.11 FPS.

강건한 CNN기반 수중 물체 인식을 위한 이미지 합성과 자동화된 Annotation Tool (Synthesizing Image and Automated Annotation Tool for CNN based Under Water Object Detection)

  • In this paper, we present auto-annotation tool and synthetic dataset using 3D CAD model for deep learning based object detection. To be used as training data for deep learning methods, class, segmentation, bounding-box, contour, and pose annotations of the object are needed. We propose an automated annotation tool and synthetic image generation. Our resulting synthetic dataset reflects occlusion between objects and applicable for both underwater and in-air environments. To verify our synthetic dataset, we use MASK R-CNN as a state-of-the-art method among object detection model using deep learning. For experiment, we make the experimental environment reflecting the actual underwater environment. We show that object detection model trained via our dataset show significantly accurate results and robustness for the underwater environment. Lastly, we verify that our synthetic dataset is suitable for deep learning model for the underwater environments.

  • Traffic safety issues have recently been seriously magnified, due to child deaths in apartment complexes and parking lots. Accordingly, traffic safety technologies are being developed to recognize dangerous situations on living roads and to provide warning services. In this study, a collision detection algorithm was developed to prevent collision accidents between moving objects, by using object type and location information provided from CCTV monitoring devices. To determine the exact collision between moving objects, an object movement model was developed to predict the range of movement by considering the moving characteristics of the object, and a collision detection algorithm was developed to efficiently analyze the presence and location of the collision. The developed object movement model as well as the collision detection algorithm were simulated, in a virtual space of an actual living road to verify performance and derive supplementary matters.

  • An object detection algorithm using a modified IDM(Image Differential Method) is proposed for detecting an object in a level crossing area. The conventional object detection method using LASER light has the deadzone that it cannot detect small objects, while the object detection method using image data in a level crossing area can detect such small objects. But the image data in a level crossing area can be changeable easily because the data is outdoor and sensitive to such surrounding environments as the change of the sun beam, the shadow of cars, and so on. So we resolve these problems by adding the normalization and the process for shadow of the image data in a level crossing area to the basic IDM(Image Differential Method).

  • Three dimensional (3-D) object detection and pose estimation from a single view query image has been an important issue in various fields such as medical applications, robot vision, and manufacturing automation. However, most of the existing methods are not appropriate in a real time environment since object detection and pose estimation requires extensive information and computation. In this paper, we present a fast 3-D object detection and pose estimation scheme based on surrounding camera view-changed images of objects. Our scheme has two parts. First, we detect images similar to the query image from the database based on the shape feature, and calculate candidate poses. Second, we perform accurate pose estimation for the candidate poses using the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) method. We earned out extensive experiments on our prototype system and achieved excellent performance, and we report some of the results.

  • Applications for object detection are expanding as it is automated through artificial intelligence-based processing, such as deep learning, on a large volume of images and videos. High dependence on training data and a non-transparent way to find answers are the common characteristics of deep learning. Attacks on training data and training models have emerged, which are closely related to the nature of deep learning. Privacy, integrity, and robustness for the extracted information are important security issues because deep learning enables object recognition in images and videos. This paper summarizes the security issues that need to be addressed for future applications and analyzes the state-of-the-art security studies related to robustness, privacy, and integrity of object detection for images and videos.
