In this paper, the optimal design of composite rotor blade cross-section is performed using a genetic algorithm. Skin thickness, torsion box thickness and skin lay-up angle are adopted as discrete design variables. The position and width of a torsion box are considered as continuous variables. An object function of optimal design is to minimize the mass of a rotor blade, and constraints are failure index, center mass, natural frequency and blade minimum mass per unit length. Finally, design variables such as the thickness and lay-up angles of a skin, and the thickness, position and width of a torsion box are determined by using an in-house program developed for the optimal design of rotor blade cross-section.

In an experiment using chest radiography, the authors measured the scattered ray content ratio and exposed skin dose giving varieties to the object thickness, tube voltage, additional filters and gird. The result was as follows, In the 80 kV the required mAs for the density 1.8 was $10{\sim}20$ times as much as in the 140 kV, and when 10 : 1 grid was used the required mAs was $3{\sim}5$ times as much as when grid was not used. Under the same tube voltage the scattered ray content ratios were increased as the additional filter thickness became thicker. And when 10 : 1 grid was used the ratio could be decreased $2{\sim}5$ times as much as when grid was not used. Skin doses exposed to the patients were increasing as the thickness of the object became thicker, and were decreasing as filters became thicker while showing slow the decreasing effects above the 1/8 VL. And when the grid was used skin doses were increased $2{\sim}4$ times as much as when not used. In order to improve the image qualities while reducing the exposures in the chest radiography, the authors suggest followings. The additional filters up to the 1/2 VL will be suitable according to the thickness of the objects in the 80kv, while the 10 : 1 grid and additional filter of 1/8 VL will be suitable in the 140 kV.
Micro computed tomography (micro-CT) has been used for in vivo animal study owing to its noninvasive and high spatial resolution capability. However, the sizes of existing detectors for micro-CT systems are too small to obtain whole-body images of a small animal object with $\sim$10 micron resolution and a part of its bones or other organs should be extracted. So, we have introduced the zoom-in micro-tomography technique which can obtain high-resolution images of a local region of an live animal object without extracting samples. In order to verify our zoom-in technique, we performed in vivo animal bone study. We prepared some SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats for making osteoporosis models. They were divided into control and ovariectomized groups. Again, the ovariectomized group is divided into two groups fed with normal food and with calcium-free food. And we took 3D tomographic images of their femurs with 20 micron resolution using our zoom-in tomography technique and observed the bone changes for 12 weeks. We selected ROI (region of interest) of a femur image and applied 2D FDT (fuzzy distance transform) to measure the trabecular bone thickness. The measured results showed obvious bone changes and big differences between control and ovariectomized groups. However, we found that the reliability of the measurement depended on the selection of ROI in a bone image for thickness calculation. So, we extended the method to 3D FDT technique. We selected 3D VOI (volume of interest) in the obtained 3D tomographic images and applied 3D FDT algorithm. The results showed that the 3D technique could give more accurate and reliable measurement.

The quality of bundles is closely related with the apparent thickness. Especially the variation of apparent thickness of bundle determines the qualify of the plane structure made or the bundle such as surface evenness, pore size, and the shape of air-gap, etc.,. This study is dealing with the development of a new measuring system of the thickness of bundle or cross-section by determining the size of the shadow of the object covered by a laser slit beam. Also the measured signal is characterized in terms of the correlogram, the irregularity in wavelength. The correlogram for the irregularity of several sample types could be represented by a sinusoidal function with exponentially decaying amplitude. Moreover, influence of the measuring speed on the signal and the characteristic differences according to the different types of bundle are investigated.
An algorithm has been proposed for the automatic detection of optimal epiand endocardial left ventricular borders from 2-D short axis echocardiogram which is degraded by noise and echo drop out. For the implementation of the algorithm, we modified Ballard's Generalized Hough Transform which can be applicable only for deterministic object border, and newly proposed Fuzzy Hough Transform method. The algorithm presented here allows detection of object whose exact shapes are unknown. The algorithm only requires an approximate model of target object based on anatomical data. To detect the approximate epicardial contour of left ventricle, Fuzzy Hough Transform was applied to the echocardiogram. The optimal epicardial contour was founded by using graph searching method which contains cost function analysis process. Using this optimal epicardial contour and average thickness imformation of left ventricular wall, the approximate endocardial line was founded, and graph searching method was also used to detect optimal endocardial contour.
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the slice thickness and the size of region of interest (ROI) on CT number using quantitative CT phantom Materials and Methods: The phantom containing 150 mg/cc, 75 mg/cc and 0 mg/cc calcium hydroxyapatite was scanned with 1, 3, 5 and 10 mm slice thicknesses by single energy quantitative computed tomography (QCT). CT numbers were measured on center position of the phantom. Shape of ROI was circular and sizes were 1, 3, 5, 11, 16, 21, 26 and 33 mm². ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison method were performed for statistical comparison of CT numbers according to different slice thicknesses. Coefficient of variation of CT number measured in each size of ROI was evaluated in same slice thickness. Results : CT numbers had statistically significant difference according to slice thicknesses (p<0.05). As the slice thickness increased, CT number also increased. As the density of phantom became lower and the size of ROI became smaller, the coefficient of variation of CT number increased. When the size of ROI was more than 11 mm² in 1 mm slice thickness, 5 mm² in 3 mm slice thickness and 3 mm² in 5 mm slice thickness, the coefficient of variation became consistent. In 10 mm slice thickness, the size of ROI had little effect on the coefficient of variation. Conclusion: CT number had variation according to the slice thickness and the size of ROI although the object was homogeneous. The slice thickness and the size of ROI are critical factors in precision of the CT number measurements.

In the research of the rolling of strip, producing the strip with a close tolerance of thickness over the rolling direction was a principal object. But it was solved by the contribution of two-dimensional theory of rolling and the development of automatic gauge control system. And new requirements for the study of flatness, crown of rolled strip and edge drop grow up recently. These phenomena are closely related with the thickness distribution along the lateral direction of rolled strip. To analyse the thickness distribution of rolled strip along the lateral direction, elastic deformation of rolls and plastic deformation of work material must be discussed simultaneously. In this report, an approximate three-dimensional analysis based on Tozawa's three dimensional approach was applied to 12 cases of different rolling conditions and the numerical results were investigated. Especially stresses were laid upon the investigation of optimal boundary position between the three-dimensional analysis region and the plane strain analysis region.

The object of this study was to design of micro stage, which is one of the equipments embodied in ultra precision positioning mechanism. Design factors for micro stage were decided a roundness of hinge, a thickness of hinge, a thickness of stage, a length of arms and a clearance of division. To obtain the $1^{st}$ natural frequency and equivalent stresses, FEM simulation was performed using the table of orthogonal arrays and Taguchi method was used to determine the optimal design parameters. As results of this study, the size of 1st natural frequency and equivalent stresses on micro stage was influenced significantly by a thickness of hinge and a length of arm.
