A Luminescence Dating for a Relict Dune from the Sindu Dunefield (신두리 지역의 고사구(古砂丘)에 대한 OSL 연대 측정)

  • To find out the buried age of the relict dune sediments, a luminescence dating bas conducted for a relict dune from the Sindu dunefield on the Taean Peninsula. It shows that the deposition of the dune sands at 3m depth began about 690$\sim$730 years ago. From 3m to l.5m depth, the lower part of the dune bas remained stable, but a relict dune deposit appear at 1.3m depth. This part yields an age of about 68 years. The two samples that were collected from the lower part of the dune at depths of the 1.5 m and 3.0 m below the surface show a net accumulation rate of around 0.75 cm/y which is relatively slow for a coastal dune. The chronology obtained in this study demonstrates that a significant amount of sediments has been replaced or remobilized in the area over the past 1000 years, and there was at least a soil formation process during the same time period. These suggest that a new approach is necessary to identify the formation age of the so-called paleo-dune at the Sind dunefield.

Age comparisons of coastal sand dune stratum in Chollipo, Korea by altering preheat and cut-heat, and grain size distributions by OSL dating (예열 및 cut-heat 온도와 입자의 크기에 따른 천리포 해안사구 퇴적층의 OSL 연대측정 비교)

  • The samples from coastal sand dune stratum in Chollipo were dated by Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) with modified Single Aliquots Regeneration (SAR) method. It is possible to choose the OSL signals by thermal treatments such as preheat and cut-heat in SAR procedure. Preheat and cut-heat of $260^{\circ}C$ for 10 sec $-220^{\circ}C$ for 0 sec, and $270^{\circ}C$ for 10 sec $-270^{\circ}C$ for 10 sec were applied for estimation of equivalent dose of the samples. The OSL signals from different thermal treatment were used for OSL dating. Equivalent dose were estimated with 4 fractionated grain distributions with $75{\mu}m$, $150{\mu}m$ and $200{\mu}m$ sieves with above heating treatments. Consequently, the estimated dose were differently valued in sample sizes and applied heating treatments, different stratum ages were calculated. The ages from radiocarbon dating were compared with the OSL ages. The ages varying with grain sizes produce that the site sampled were formed with mixed soil sources.

Investigations on Rock Cliff Development in Dunduri, West coast of Korea, Using Schmidt Hammer Rebound Values and OSL Chronology (슈미트해머 반발도와 OSL 연대에 기반한 둔두리 해식애의 형성과정)

  • Rock strength test on Dunduri cliff, Chungnam province, Korea, was performed using N-type Schmidt hammer and the depositional ages of the sediments overlying the cliff were derived using OSL dating method. The averaged R-values of the cliffs investigated here were lower than those observed from the shore platforms, but with larger scatter in the former. R-values were negatively correlated to cliff face retreat, implying that the irregularity of the coastal rock faces was closely related to lithology as the weaker rocks retreated much faster than the harder rocks. The overlying deposit of the cliff tends to be thicker at valleys and were poorly sorted with angular to subangular clasts in a matrix of silt. The OSL ages (ca. 70-77 ka) presented here were older than the previously reported exposure ages (ca. 7-30 ka) of the cliff face. Therefore, it is likely that the present sea cliff was developed by expansion of the platform which had been covered by slope deposits since the last interglacial and exposed again during the Holocene.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating on the Quaternary deposits in Yonghan-ri, Heunghae-eup, Pohang City, South Korea (포항시 흥해읍 용한리지역에 분포하는 제4기 퇴적층의 OSL 연대)

  • This study investigated Quaternary sand deposits in the process of surveying Quaternary deposits distributed in Yonghan-ri, Heunghae-eup, Pohang city. Field geological surveys were conducted and OSL dating samples were taken. The altitude of the Quaternary sand deposits layer is about 15m, and there are two upper and lower sand dune layers, and a peat layer is developed between them. The sampling point are just above the peat layer, and the altitude level is about 13.4m (YHO-1) and about 13.7m (YHO-2). OSL dating was performed for YHO-1 and YHO-2 and the results were 69 ± 6 ka and 62 ± 5 ka, respectively. The date analyzed are interpreted as MIS 4. On the other hand, the formation time of the peat layer at an altitude of about 13.2 to 13.7m can be compared with the results of the OSL dating of the above sandy deposits. The peat layer can be inferred to have formed during MIS 5a or earlier.

The Examination of the Limitations of Using the OSL Dates Derived from this Study in the Correlation of MIS 5 Marine Terraces Distributed in the Southeastern Coast of the Korean Peninsula (한반도 남동부 해안 해성단구의 분류와 편년에 있어서 본 연구에서 도출된 OSL 연대 적용의 한계성 검토)

  • The lower marine terrace 1 and 2 surfaces distributed between Ulsan and Pohang coast in the southeastern coast of the Korean penninsula have been correlated with MIS 5e and 5a (or 5c) by amino acid dates, 14C dates, wide-spread tephra correlation and pollen analysis respectively. In this study, to test the reliability of the OSL method for the estimation of the numerical burial age of marine sediment deposits, we analyzed the samples from the marine terraces which have been known as typical marine terraces formed during MIS 5e and MIS 5a in the above-mentioned coast. The burial ages of the marine deposit of the lower marine terrace 1 and 2, with paleoshoreline altitudes of 18m to 19m and 10m to 11m respectively, both showed about the same age of 60 ka BP. The lower marine terraces 1 and 2, however, were divided into two terrace surfaces by a clear terrace cliff. Besides, the OSL dates of the lower and upper parts of the lower marine terrace 2 of the Bonggil coast showed the reversed burial ages. In the lower marine terrace 1 of the Sanhari coast, almost the same burial ages were derived from both the lower part (marine rounded gravel layer) and the upper part (terrestrial angular gravel layer) of the terrace deposit. Therefore, at the present time, judging from only the OSL dates measured in this study, it could be argued that the OSL method is not the best for the estimation of forming periods of the lower marine terraces 1 and 2 and their classification.

  • The roof tiles excavated from the mountain fortress at Namsan-ri Seocheon-gun in Chungnam province were dated by using SAR protocol, Sample preparation was done with the quartz exclusion method. The paleodoses from 6 kinds of roof tiles were obtained from OSL measurements and the does rates of the soil around the excavated roof tiles and the tile themselves were measured from ICP/MS and ICP/AES with the conversion table. From the evaluated paleodose and the dose rate, the age of the roof tiles were determined to be from(733 ± 50)AD to (1160 ± 50)AD and the error was less than 10%.

The Relationship between Climate Change and Magnetic Susceptibility of Estuarine Sediments (하구역 퇴적물의 대자율 변화와 기후변화의 연관성)

  • This study intended to explain the relationship between climate change and magnetic susceptibility of estuarine sediment. Data of OSL dating and magnetic susceptibility from estuarine tidal sediment were compared with various climate change data. During the last Holocene, the intense of magnetic susceptibility related with weaker Siberian High and stronger Asian Summer Monsoon. It is explained that high precipitation and runoff made much fluvial sediment input to the estuary. From the early to mid Holocene, there is no clear relationship between climate change and MS because of the much coastal sediment input caused by rapid sea level rise and the formation of upland soil and coastal marsh. These results contribute to reconstruct paleo-environmental changes of west coast of Korea, in the way of using benefit of ubiquitous estuarine tidal flats and relatively useful magnetic susceptibility methodoloy.

Estimation of Uplift Rate Based on Morphostratigraphy and Chronology of Coastal Terraces in the SE Part of Korean Peninsula (한반도 남동부에 분포하는 해안단구의 지형층서 및 연대자료를 이용한 융기율 평가)

  • Terrace stratigraphy of the southeastern coastal areas of Korea is reappraised on the basis of terrace mapping and geochronology. Coastal terraces are divided into uHT ($90{\sim}130\;m$), HT ($63{\sim}86m$), MT ($36{\sim}55\;m$), and LT ($8{\sim}25\;m$) according to altitude. Among these, the Lower Terrace I is interpreted to have formed during MIS 5e based on Tephras Aso-4 (MIS 5c), Ata(MIS 5d or 5e) and OSL data. The age of Lower Terrace II is thought to be MIS 5a based on tephras and OSL data. The uplift rate in the SE part of Korea during the formation of the Lower Terrace (i.e. the MIS 5) ranges from 0.08 to 0.25 mm/yr and averages as 0.15 mm/yr. Such value is quite small in comparison to that of Japan, Taiwan or many other tectonically active areas in the world.

The Development and Luminescence Chronology of a Coastal Dune from the Shindu Dunefield, T′aean Peninsula (신두리 지역의 전사구(前砂丘)에 대한 OSL 연대 측정 및 지형 발달)

  • Luminescence dating of a coastal dune from the Shindu dunefield on the T'aean Peninsula shows that deposition of the dune structure began about 500-600 years ago. The lower section of the dune has remained stable since then but the upper part yields an age of about 30 years, suggesting reactivation or additional deposition since the 1970's. The two samples that were collected from the lower part of the dune at depths of 3.5 m and 2.0 m below the surface differ by an age interval of about 50-70 years. This indicates a net depositional rate of around 2.5 cm a year which is relatively slow for a coastal dune. Whilst only one dune structure has been dated for the time being and even though the dunefield was probably established much earlier in the Holocene, the OSL ages obtained demonstrate that some dunes in the area could be younger than 1000 years. Such chronologies point to a dynamic environment where the dune structures are not permanently fixed. Sedimentological properties of the dune sands are consistent with those of particles initially deposited under subaqueous conditions and then later transported by wind.
