This study analyzes the design and part load performance of a power generation system combining a micro gas turbine (MGT) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Design performances of cycles adopting several different organic fluids are analyzed and compared with performance of the steam based cycle. All of the organic fluids recover greater MGT exhaust heat than the steam cycle (much lower stack temperature), but their bottoming cycle efficiencies are lower. R123 provides higher combined cycle efficiency than steam does. The efficiencies of the combined cycle with organic fluids are maximized when the turbine exhaust heat of the MGT is fully recovered at the MGT recuperator, whereas the efficiency of the combined cycle with steam shows an almost reverse trend. Since organic fluids have much higher density than steam, they allow more compact systems. The efficiency of the combined cycle, based on a MGT with 30 percent efficiency, can reach almost 40 percent. hlso, the part load operation of the combined system is analyzed. Two representative power control methods are considered and their performances are compared. The variable speed control of the MGT exhibits far better combined cycle part load efficiency than the fuel only control despite slightly lower bottoming cycle performance.
Variants of X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) are involved in the development of cancer, but studies investigating the association of XRCC1-77T>C polymorphism with cancer risk have reported conflicting results. To clarify the effect of the XRCC1 -77T>C polymorphism on cancer risk, we performed a meta-analysis by conducting searches of the published literature in PubMed, Embase and CBM databases. Finally, 13 studies were included into our meta-analysis, involving a total of 11, 678 individuals. Subgroup analyses were performed by ethnicity and cancer type. The results of this meta-analysis showed that there was significant association between the C variant of XRCC1-77T>C polymorphism and cancer risk in all four genetic comparison models (ORC vs. T =1.19, 95%CI 1.07-1.31, P = 0.001; OR homozygote model =1.28, 95%CI 1.07-1.52, P = 0.007; OR recessive genetic model =1.22, 95%CI 1.04-1.44, P = 0.015; OR dominant model =1.21, 95% CI 1.07-1.35, P = 0.001). In the subgroup analyses based on ethnicity, the association was still significant in the Asian population (all p values<0.001), but not in the Caucasian population (all p values > 0.05). Thus, the XRCC1 -77T>C polymorphism is associated with cancer risk, and individuals with XRCC1 -77C variant have a significantly higher cancer risk, particularly in the Asian population.
In this paper a performance analysis is carried out based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics for heat exchanger in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) for the recovery of low-temperature finite thermal energy source. In the analysis, effects of the selection of working fluid and pinch temperature difference are investigated on the performance of the heat exchanger including the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, exergy destruction, second-law efficiency, number of transfer unit (NTU), and pinch point. The temperature distribution are shown depending on the working fluids and the pinch temperature difference. The results show that the performance of the heat exchanger depends on the pinch temperature difference sensitively. As the pinch temperature increases, the exergy destruction in the evaporator increases but the effectiveness, second law efficiency and NTU decreases.
This technical report was developed to suggest the guideline to assess the safe use and handling metalworking fluids (MWFs) in machining operation. The basis of this method developed in this study was based on self assessment procedure recommended by Organization Resources Counselors (ORC) of the United States (US). In addition, various MWF management elements obtained from the review on various articles, reports and author's experience regarding MWF were newly added to the evaluation guideline. A total of four areas were finally selected in order to control exposure to MWF used in machining operations. They are all related to the presence and efficiency of the control measures, exposure assessment, management on tank and sump, and safe treatment of chips and metal fines generated during machining operations. Each area is consisted of several related elements. Several evaluation areas and elements used in this study could be revised, replaced, added and deleted according to the process environment, evaluation objectives and evaluator's (manager) criteria etc. This evaluation guide manual could be used for safe management of MWF in metalworking operation. In addition, industrial hygienists can use this evaluation method for auditing and evaluating the management status on MWF.
Background: Extensive efforts have been made to investigate c-KIT expression in lung cancer specimens and its correlation with clinical outcomes, but the issue remains unresolved. Thus, this study will be conducted to clarify the prognostic value of c-KIT expression in lung cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We will search Pubmed, SCOPUS, and ISI web of sciences with no restriction of language. Studies with any design (except case reports or case series) evaluating correlations of c-KIT expression with survival or outcome in patients with lung cancer will be included. The outcome measures will include all types of survival indexes, including overall survival rate and disease free survival using Kaplan-Meier analysis and hazard ratios. Study selection and data extraction will be performed by two independent researchers. Quality assessment (assessment of risk of bias) and data synthesis will be implemented using Stata software version 11.1. Results: No ethical issues are predicted. These findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at national and international conferences. Conclusions: This systematic review protocol is registered in the PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews, registration number = CRD42015023391.
In Ocean, the temperature of the deep sea water is always lower than that of the surface sea water. The temperature difference between the surface water and deep sea water is about $20^{\circ}C$. Based on thermodynamics, this temperature difference can be converted into mechanical power. The mechanical power can be converted to electricity through a generator. However, the temperature difference is relatively small compared with that of traditional steam turbines. It is difficult to apply the steam turbine technology for this small temperature difference directly. Therefore, the turbine for OTEC system using low temperature difference should be designed to meet the system requirement. The present study focuses on the development of the turbine for 20 kW OTEC system using R32. The paper includes the determination of working fluids, meridional design, turbine layout and 3D CFD results. With off-design points analysis, the full performance of 20kW OTEC turbine is investigated. Through the research, one stage radial type turbine with R32 as working fluid is successfully developed and can be applied to other high temperature heat source.
This study is collects design data through the process design of the organic Rankine cycle, which can produce 20kW of electric power through the recovery of waste heat. In this study, the simulation was conducted by using APSEN HYSYS in order to make the model for the process design of the 20kW class waste heat recovery system. For the thermodynamic model, the test was conducted with hot water as the heat source, with the water steam used as the cooling water for the cooler and the refrigerant R245fa in the cycle. In Case 1 and Case 2, it was expected and found that the cycle efficiency was 10.6% and that 36.86kw was produced, considering the margin of 84% of 20kW. In Case 3 and Case 4, it was expected and found from the simulation that the cycle efficiency was 12% and that 30.0kw was produced, considering the margin of 84% of 20kW.
In this paper, the feasibility study on a gerotor type expander as a power converting device in a small scale power generation ORC system was made by performance analysis of the gerotor expander. Design of a 1kW-class gerotor expander was carried out and its performance was numerically simulated. For a R134a Rankine system with about 20 kW solar heat source, the gerotor expander efficiency was calculated to be 35~75% for the operating conditions of $Te=80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ and $Tc=30{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. Maximum expander efficiency was obtained at an expansion ratio somewhat higher than the design expansion ratio due to pre-expansion during suction process inside the outer and inner rotor mate. If the operating expansion ratio is not far from the design expansion ratio, the gerotor expander performance can be well compared to that of a scroll type.
Previous studies showed that Cdc7 kinase of Schizosaccharomyces pombe phosphorylated the minichromosome maintenance (Mcm) complex efficiently in the presence of spMcm10 protein. The biochemical properties of the phosphorylated Mcm complexes were examined to understand the activation mechanism of the Mcm complex by Cdc7 kinase. The phosphorylation of Mcm complex in the presence of spMcm10 by Cdc7 kinase did not affect the stability of the Mcm complex containing all six subunits, and the changes in the sedimentation properties were not observed after the phosphorylation. The reconstitution of the Mcm complex using the purified proteins showed that the phosphorylation of Mcm2 proteins did not affect the interactions between Mcm proteins. The phosphorylation of the Mcm2-7 complex at the same condition also did not activate the other biochemical activities such as DNA helicase and single stranded (ss) DNA binding activities. On the other hand, spMcm10 protein that was used for the stimulation of Mcm phosphorylation showed single stranded DNA binding activity, and inhibited the DNA helicase activity of the Mcm4/6/7 complex. These inhibitory effects were reduced by the addition of Cdc7 kinase, suggesting that the phosphorylation by Cdc7 kinase decreased the interactions between spMcm10 and the Mcm complex. Taken together, these results suggested that the phosphorylation by Cdc7 kinase alone is not sufficient for the remodeling and the activation of the Mcm complex, and the additional factors or the phosphorylations might be required for the activation of the Mcm complex.
An algebraic scroll expander has been fabricated and tested in a R134a Rankine cycle with heat source of 20 kW. For the operating conditions of 20~26 bar and $90{\sim}93^{\circ}C$ at the expander inlet and 8~9 bar at the outlet, the expander produced the shaft output power of about 0.6~0.7 kW in the operating speed range of 1500~2000 rpm. These correspond to the expander efficiency of 40~45%. The volumetric efficiency increased with increasing of the expander speed, reaching to 80% at 2000 rpm. Comparing to numerical simulation results, mechanical efficiency from the test data was found to be considerably low by as much as 30%, indicating that reduction in the frictional loss should be made to improve the scroll expander efficiency.
