  • The concept of reliability has been applied to the topology optimization based on a reliability index approach or a performance measure approach. Since these approaches, called double-loop single vector approach, require the nested optimization problem to obtain the most probable point in the probabilistic design domain, the time for the entire process makes the practical use infeasible. In this work, new reliability-based topology optimization method is proposed by utilizing single-loop single-vector approach, which approximates searching the most probable point analytically, to reduce the time cost. The results of design examples show that the proposed method provides efficiency curtailing the time for the optimization process and accuracy satisfying the specified reliability.

  • In the shape optimization based on the finite element method, the accuracy of finite element analysis of a given structure is important to determine the final shape. In case of a bending dominant problem, finite element solutions by the full integration scheme are not reliable because of the locking phenomenon. Furthermore, in the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline: therefore, we cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate. We approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two-dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element have improved the optimization results.

  • The tracked vehicle travel on off rod and on rod. So the tracked vehicle need a sufficient stiffness and a lightweight. In this study we performed FEA for the track vehicle and performed topology optimization based on the results of FEA. The displacements of road wheel are used as displacement constraint for topology optimization. We performed topology optimization with the control of the frame size which is the results of topology optimization and suggested the shaped of the tracked vehicle bottom plate of topology optimization

  • ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization) method is known that elements involved low stress value are removed from the previous model or that elements are added around elements involved high stress level on it and then the optimized model is obtained with required weight. Rejection ratio/addition ratio and evolutionary ratio are predefined and elements having lower/higher stress than reference stress, which average Mises stress on edge elements times rejection ratio, are deleted/added. In this study, when the plate having a cutout is subjected various in-plane load, a cutout shape is optimized using ESO method. ANSYS is used to analyse a finite element model and optimization procedure is made by APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language). ESO method is useful in rather than a complex structure optimization as well as a cutout shape optimization.

  • In practical designs, most of the multidisciplinary problems have a large-size and complicate design system. Since multidisciplinary problems have hundreds of analyses and thousands of variables, the grouping of analyses and the order of the analyses in the group affect the speed of the total design cycle. Therefore, it is very important to reorder and regroup the original design processes in order to minimize the total computational cost by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and by processing them in parallel. In this study, a new decomposition method is proposed for parallel processing of multidisciplinary design optimization, such as collaborative optimization (CO) and individual discipline feasible (IDF) method. Numerical results for two example problems are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • Structural shape optimization offers engineers with numerous advantages in designing shapes of structures. However, excessive relocation of nodes often cause distortion of elements and eventually result in degrade of accuracy and even halts of processes. To overcome these problems, an effective method, Selective Element Method(SEM), has been developed. This paper describes the basic concept of SEM and processes to implement into real-world problem. 2-D and 3-D shape optimization problems have been chosen to show the performance of the method. Though some limitations have been found, it was concluded that SEM can be useful in general shape optimization and even in some special cases such as decision of optimal weld line location.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of three heuristic optimization algorithms, namely, simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) for optimal stacking sequence of laminated composite plates with respect to critical buckling load and non-dimensional natural frequencies, a multi-objective optimization procedure is developed using the weighted summation method. Classical lamination theory and first order shear deformation theory are employed for critical buckling load and natural frequency computations respectively. The analytical critical buckling load and finite element calculation schemes for natural frequencies are validated through the results obtained from literature. The comparative study takes into consideration solution and computational time parameters of the three algorithms in the statistical evaluation scheme. The results indicate that particle swarm optimization (PSO) considerably outperforms the remaining two methods for the special problem considered in the study.

  • Optimization methodologies have been proposed of find the best environment-friendly recycling pathways of plastic materials based on life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The main difficulty in conducting this optimization study is that multiple environmental burdens have to be considered simultaneously as the cost functions. Instead of generating conservative Pareto or noninferior solutions following multi-objective optimization approaches, we have proposed some practical criteria on how to combine the different environmental burdens into a single measure. The obtained single objective optimization problem can then be solved by conventional nonlinear programming techniques or, more effectively, by a tree search method based on decision flows. The latter method reduces multi-dimensional optimization problems to a set of one-dimensional problems in series. It is expected the suggested tree search approach can be applied to many LCA studies as a new promising optimization tool.

  • The general capacitor placement problem is a combinatorial optimization problem having an objective function composed of power losses and capacitor installation costs subject to bus voltage constraints. In this paper, a global optimization technique, which employing the chaos search algorithm, is applied to solve optimal capacitor placement problem with reducing computational effort and enhancing global optimality of the solution. Chaos method in optimization problem searches the global optimal solution on the regularity of chaotic motions and easily escapes from local or near optimal solution than stochastic optimization algorithms. The chaos optimization method is tested on 9 buses and 69 buses system to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
