A Low-Cost Open-Source Air Sampler for the Sorbent Tube Sampling for TD-GC/MS Analysis

  • In this study, we provide full descriptions of how to make a low-cost and completely open-source laboratory-made air sampler that will be used for sample adsorption for thermal desorption-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) analysis. It is well known that harmful gases cause bad effects on human bodies, so it is necessary to identify the types and amounts of gases in industrial sites. One of the most commonly used methods for gas sampling is to utilize a sorbent tube using an air sampler. Commercially available air samplers are expensive, typically priced between $1,000 and $2,000, and their design often cannot be modified to fit the experiment. To address these shortcomings, we have developed a do-it-yourself (DIY) air sampler that is not only cheap enough, but also completely open-source. Furthermore, the performance of the fabricated air sampler was validated in conjunction with TD-GC/MS for the analysis of volatile compounds.

NURBS Surface Interpolator for Constant Cutting Forces in Ball-End Milling (볼엔드 밀링에서의 일정 절삭력을 위한 NURBS 곡면 인터폴레이터)

  • This study presents a new type of CNC interpolator that is capable of generating cutter paths for ball-end milling of NURBS surfaces. The proposed surface interpolator comprises real-time algorithms for cutter contact (CC) path scheduling and CC path interpolator. Especially in this study, a new interpolator module to regulate cutting forces is developed. This propose algorithm utilizes variable-feedrate commands along the CC path according to the curvature of machined surfaces during the interpolation process. Additionally, it proposes an OpenGL graphic library for computer graphics and animation of interpolated tool-position display. The proposed interpolator is evaluated and compared with the existing method based on constant feedrates through computer simulations.

  • Based on the relative velocity method and the inverse kinematics theory, this paper presents an automated system for designing and manufacturing of an open type cylindrical cam with a rotating follower(OCRF). In the first part, this paper defines the relative velocity method for OCRF and calculates the contact point by using the coordinate transformation technique. In the second part, it generates NC Code of a CNC machine center for inverse kinematics by using the cutter location and the cutter orientation of OCRF. Finally, the automated CADICAM program developed in the paper shows an example on the desip and manufacture process of OCRF.

  • This study aims at developing the high speed/intelligent machining system using the plug/play method of an open architecture controller. The plug/play technology by the application Specific Function (ASF), can readily implement the open architecture controller into various machining system or other automatic devices. The plug/play method integrates the ASF, visual builder, controller OS technology. This study, as an example, presents a schematic diagram for integration of an open architecture CNC and individual component technology for the high speed/intelligent machining system.

Development of ISO14649 Compliant CNC Milling Machine Operated by STEP-NC in XML Format

  • G-code, another name of ISO6983, has been a popular commanding language for operating machine tools. This G-code, however, limits the usage of today's fast evolving high-performance hardware. For intelligent machines, the communications between machine and CAD/CAM departments become important, but the loss of information during generating G-code makes the production department isolated. The new standard for operating machine tools, named STEP-NC is just about to be standardized as ISO14649. As this new standard stores CAD/CAM information as well as operation commands of CNC machines, and this characteristic makes this machine able to exchange information with other departments. In this research, the new CNC machine operated by STEP-NC was built and tested. Unlike other prototypes of STEP-NC milling machines, this system uses the STEP-NC file in XML file form as data input. This machine loads information from XML file and deals with XML file structure. It is possible for this machine to exchange information to other databases using XML. The STEP-NC milling machines in this research loads information from the XML file, makes tool paths for two5D features with information of STEP-NC, and machines automatically without making G-code. All software is programmed with Visual $C^{++}$, and the milling machine is built with table milling machine, step motors, and motion control board for PC that can be directly controlled by Visual $C^{++}$ commands. All software and hardware modules are independent from each other; it allows convenient substitution and expansion of the milling machine. Example 1 in ISO14649-11 having the full geometry and machining information and example 2 having only the geometry and tool information were used to test the automatic machining capability of this system.

  • This paper deals with the precision NURBS interpolator for wire-EDM. Previous research about OAC (Open Architecture Controller) is mostly aimed at NC cutting machines such as milling or lathes, and hence these results are inadequate to apply to wire-EDM. In contradiction to NC machines, wire-EDM operates relatively slow feed rates and based on a feedback control loop to the machining process. The 2-stage interpolation method which reflects wire-EDM specific characteristics was proposed. The constant interpolation error could be acquired through 1 st stage interpolation. Feed rate regulation was performed through 2nd stage interpolation. The suggested algorithm was implemented to test-bed PC-NC system. Computer simulations and the experimental machining were conducted.

  • Manufacturing devices must be integrated for constructing CIM environment, but integration of heterogeneous system meets several economical and technological difficulties. In this case, MMS(Manufacturing Message Specification) can be an effective method, but it has problems which MMS products are generally very expensive and majority of the existing manufacturing devices do not support MMS. This paper describes the development of a gateway for Non-MMS-Compatible CNC machine tools to serve MMS and the implementation of OSI(Open System Interconnection) upper layer on TCP/IP. The developed system is applied to construct cell controller with heterogeneous devices under CIM environment and to evaluate interoperability and portability.

A Study on the Optimal Pressure Curve for the Sheet Hydroforming (판재 액압성형 공정에서의 최적압력곡선에 관한 연구)

  • A simple method to derive an optimal pressure curve, characterized by initial pressure, final pressure and pressure path, has been proposed. The initial pressure has been determined from the condition to prevent recoiling phenomenon in the early stage, while the final pressure is from the FE analysis and pressure path is from the punch penetration volume. In order to realize the pressure curve, an open loop control system based on a proportional relief valve has been developed for the renovated CNC hydroforming press. Through the comparison of experiment and analysis, the predicted pressure curve has been verified optimal curve since no defect has been observed.

  • This paper proposes the Embedded Linux System that can overcome the shortcomings of conventional CNC machine system. Linux is free of charge with the open source library and tools that can be used in the development of Kernel. Besides, Application is easily available through countless open source, allowing simple mending for seamless porting. This study have developed the study about NC Program automation Load System based on Embedded Linux and the ordered controller.

Development of Stamping Die Quality Inspection System Using Machine Vision (머신 비전을 이용한 금형 품질 검사 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, we present a case study of developing MVIS (Machine Vision Inspection System) designed for exterior quality inspection of stamping dies used in the production of automotive exterior components in a small to medium-sized factory. While the primary processes within the factory, including machining, transportation, and loading, have been automated using PLCs, CNC machines, and robots, the final quality inspection process still relies on manual labor. We implement the MVIS with general-purpose industrial cameras and Python-based open-source libraries and frameworks for rapid and low-cost development. The MVIS can play a major role on improving throughput and lead time of stamping dies. Furthermore, the processed inspection images can be leveraged for future process monitoring and improvement by applying deep learning techniques.
