Occurrence and Species of Arsenic in the Groundwater of Ulsan Area (울산지역 지하수중 비소의 산출 및 존재형태)

  • Arsenic was detected in the 29 water samples out of the 46 groundwaters located in the Ulsan metropolitan area and it's concentration ranges from $<0.1\;to\;72{\mu}g/L$. Among them the arsenic concentrations of three samples are over domestic drinking-water requirements $(50{\mu}g/L)$, and those of 10 samples are more than WHO MCLs, $10{\mu}g/L.$. High arsenic groundwater were recognized in the two region; one was near the tectonic line, especially Ulsan iron mine at Dalcheunri and the other was around Hyomundong distributed Jeongia conglomerate. It is estimated that the former is originated from pyrite oxydation type, oxygenated redox, whilst the latter is resulted from oxidation of reducted FeOOH. The species of arsenic in groundwater is in pentavalent arsenic, $H_2AsO_4^-,\;HAsO4_^{-2}$ near tectonic line, and trivalent arsenic, $H_3AsO_3$ around Hyomundong.

Phase Transformation and Microstructural Change of Alumina Membrane (알루미나 여과막의 상전이와 미세구조 변화)

  • Alumina membrane was prepared by sol-gel coating method using boehmite powder(${\Upsilon}-AlOOH$). The supported and the unsupported alumina membrane were fabricated to investigate the phase transformation and change of microstructure. It is important to control the homogeneous pore size and distribution in application of filtering process. The ${\theta}-to\;{\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ phase transformation (XRD) and the change of microstructure was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). XRD patterns showed that the supported membrane had $100^{\circ}C$ higher ${\theta}-to\;{\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ transformation temperature compared to the unsupported membrane. The similar effect was also observed for microstructural change of the membrane.

  • To investigate the alleviative effects of Peonia japonica water extract(PJWE) on inflammation and skin barrier damage, both the irradiation of UVB and the application of squalene monohydroperoxide (Sq-OOH) to the backs of hairless mice were performed for 4 weeks. And at the same time experimental materials were applied topically. The skin erythema indices for the positive control (PC, 0.01% retinoic acid) and experimental (E, PJWE) groups were lower than that of the control (C) group. Whereas both the lipid and water capacities for the PC and E groups were higher than those of the C group. Epidermis and dermis of the C group were remarkably thickened in comparison with the PC and E groups. Relatively much less number of inflammatory cells, including lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages were found in dermis of the PC and E groups compared with the C group. Lipid lamellae of the C group were broken severely showing an irregular arrangement and lipid content was much reduced. Whereas those of the PC and E groups were almost intact with a regular arrangement, which were similar to that of the N group. Taken the results all together, it was confirmed that PJWE could be effective natural herbal material for the alleviation of inflammation and skin barrier damage in hairless mice skin which were induced by UVB and Sq-OOH.

Effect of Precipitants and Precipitation Conditions on Synthesis of β-Ga2O3 Powder (침전제의 종류 및 침전 공정의 변화가 β-Ga2O3 분말 합성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this research, a precipitation method was used to synthesize ${\beta}-Ga_2O_3$ powders with various particle morphologies and sizes under varying precipitation conditions, such as gallium nitrate concentration, pH, and aging temperature, using ammonium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate as precipitants. The obtained powders were characterized in detail by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, and TG-DSC. From the TG-DSC result, GaOOH phase was transformed to ${\beta}-Ga_2O_3$ at around $742^{\circ}C$, and weight loss percent was about 14 % when $NH_4OH$ was used as a precipitant. Also, ${\beta}-Ga_2O_3$ formed at $749^{\circ}C$ and weight loss percent was about 15 % when $(NH)_2CO_3$ was used as a precipitant. XRD results showed that the obtained $Ga_2O_3$ had pure monoclinic phase in both cases. When $(NH)_2CO_3$ was used as a precipitant, the particle shape changed and became irregular. The range of particle size was about $500nm-4{\mu}m$ based on various concentrations of gallium nitrate solution with $NH_4OH$. The particle size was increased from $1-2{\mu}m$ to $3-4{\mu}m$ and particle shape was changed from spherical to bar type by increasing aging temperature over $80^{\circ}C$.

  • $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ was prepared by urea-induced homogeneous precipitation and characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. At increased precipitant concentrations, AlOOH replaced $Al(OH)_3$ as an Al precursor. $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ exhibited enhanced catalytic combustion performance and inhibited CO generation. Catalytic performance was also enhanced by the presence of $BaAl_2O_4$ and $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$. Compared to $BaAl_2O_4$, $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ exhibited superior catalytic combustion activity.

  • The starting materials were aluminum hydroxide prepared by precipitation method at the conditions of pH values; 7, 9, 10 and 11. The properties of alumina powder on heat-treatment were studied. After dehydrating structural water from amorphous aluminum hydroxide, the first formed phase was amorphous alumina and its specific surface are was decreased. The specific surface area was increased by dehydration of structural water from aluminum hydroxides except amorphous aluminum hydroxide. The specific surface area was increased with increase of the ratio of A1OOH to $A1(OH)_3$ in the region of transition aluminas. The rate of transition from aluminum hydroxide to alpha alumina occurred in the order of 7, 10, 9 and 11 of pH values. The morphology of alpha alumina powders was skeleton particles remaining outer shape of aluminum hydroxide. Both the elevation of heat-treatment temperature and the transition toalpha alumina decreased specific surface area and brought about the growth of particles.

Effect of Specific urface Area on the Gas Sensitive Properties (${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ 세라믹 가스감지소자;비표면이 가스감응성에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper is concerned with a gas sensor composed of semi-conducting ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ ceramics made by oxidizing $Fe_2O_3$ sintered body. Acicular $\alpha$-FeOOH powder prepared by precipitation of $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ solution was transformed to $FeSO_4$ sintered at 700$^{\circ}$-850$^{\circ}$C for 1 hr. and then oxidized to ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ The gas sensitive properties of ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ ceramic bodies based on the lectrical resistance change was measured in 0.5-2 vol% $H_2$ and $C_2$ $H_2$ gas at 35$0^{\circ}C$ The specific surface area of sintered specimen largely dependent on the sintering temperature and grain shape directly affected the gas sensitive pro-perties of ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$gas sensor. Specimens having larger specific surface area showed better sensitivity which means the electrical resistance change due to oxidation and reduction process occurs on ly at the surface of grains microscopically in the ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ceramics. Micropores made in $Fe_2O_3$ powder during dehydration of $\alpha$-FeOOH can not prompt the gas sensitive properties of sintered ${\gamma}$-$Fe_2O_3$ because they are sintered or closed in the grains during sintering process and dose not affect the specific surface area of sintered body.

유기 및 관행재배 고추의 생리활성성분 분석 및 기능성 평가

  • 관행재배 농산물에 대한 유기재배 농산물의 생리활성성분 및 기능성 측면에서의 우수성에 대한 관심이 국제적으로 화두가 되고 있으나 일관성 있는 데이터가 제시되지 못해 논란이 이어지고 있다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 한국인이 일상적으로 섭취하고 있는 고추(녹광)를 대상으로 생산이력이 분명한 관행 및 유기 재배 시료를 이용해 주의 깊게 확립된 분석법을 이용해 유기 및 관행재배 고추의 생리활성성분 함량비교 및 기능성 평가를 행하였다. 그 결과 ascorbic acid, capsaicin, dihydrocapsaicin 및 총 페놀성 화합물의 함량은 녹색 및 적색 고추 모두에 있어 관행보다 유기재배 고추가 유의(p<0.05)하게 더 높은 값을 보였다. 그리고 flavonoid류(apigenin, luteolin, quercetin)의 함량은 녹색과 적색고추 모두 유의차는 인정되지 않았으나 관행보다 유기재배 고추에서 더 높은 경향을 나타냈다. 또 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ammonium salt) (ABTS+) radical-scavenging 활성은 녹색고추에 있어서는 유기재배 고추가 관행재배 고추보다 더 높은 경향을 보였으며, 적색고추에 있어서는 유의(p<0.05)하게 높은 활성을 보였다. 고추추출물을 경구투여한 쥐 (Sprague-Dawley, 6주령, men, 180~250 g) 혈장의 동이온 유도산화에 대한 cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide (CE-OOH) 생성 억제능을 평가한 결과, 고추추출물을 경구투여한 쥐가 대조구보다 더 높은 CE-OOH 생성 억제능과 lag time연장 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 그 효과는 관행재배 고추보다 유기재배 고추에 있어서 더 우수한 것으로 관찰되었고, 녹색고추보다 적색고추에 있어 그 효과가 더 뛰어난 것으로 평가되었다. 이러한 결과는 위에서 분석한 각 시료에 함유된 항산화 성분들의 함량과 관련이 있는 결과라 판단되며, 유기재배 고추가 관행재배 고추보다 유용성분 및 생리활성 측면에서 더 우수함을 시사하는 결과라 사료된다. 그러나 한편으로 본 연구결과는 고추에 국한된 성과라 할 수 있으며, 유기재배 방법 및 다양한 환경조건에 따라 그 결과 또한 다양성을 보일 수 있음에 주의를 기울일 필요가 있다고 판단된다.

Characteristic of Inorganic Contaminants and Conservation Treatment Materials for the Three-Storied Stone Pagoda of Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju (경주 불국사 삼층석탑(석가탑)의 무기오염물과 보수물질 특성)

  • Analyses of the three-storied stone pagoda at the Bulguksa temple in Gyeongju were carried out in order to identify the cause for material characteristics of inorganic contaminants and conservation treatment materials. Results indicated that foreign soil or weathering soil caused yellow discoloration of the pagoda, reddish-brown contaminants were formed by goethite (FeOOH), an iron oxide mineral, and black pollutants were formed by manganese (Mn) oxide, leading to discoloration of the rock. Among the restoration materials used in the past, cement mortar could cause whitening by reacting with the external environment. The results were used as basic standards to evaluate the material characteristics of the surface contaminants and identify a set of effective conservation treatments. Nevertheless, continuous monitoring is required, as there is a high possibility of regeneration of pollutants in the future because of the continuous exposure of the pagoda to the external environment.

Preparation of Needle-like $\alpha$-Iron Oxide Using a Crystal Growth Controller. (결정 성장 조절제를 이용한 침상형 $\alpha$산화철의 제조)

  • Iron oxide (hematite, $\alpha$-${Fe}_{2}{O}_{3}$) particles were prepared directly from aqueous solution using a crystal growth controller. Paticles properties and reaction mechanisum of products as a function of basicity, formation process and mechanism of needle-lkie hematite were investigated. hexagonal hermatite particles were formed in teh range below pH 9.0, ellipsoidal or rectangular hematite particles in the range of pH 10.75-11.75 respectively. In the range above pH 12.50, acicular $\alpha$-FeOOH was formed. Basicity of product solution produced in the range of pH 10.7511.75 was increased slightly as compared with basicity of reastants due to hydroxly ion(OH-) formed by dissociation crystal growth controller. Citric acid which is acted as a crystal growth controller was adsorbed in the form of itrate anion(R-COO-) on the ferric hydroxide and exerted important role on the formation to the needle-like $\alpha$-${Fe}_{2}{O}_{3}$ particles in this reaction system.
