  • A practical procedure for the ultimate compressive strength-based safety and reliability assessment of the double skin upper deck structure is described. The external compressive stress acting on the upper deck structure which is due to the still water and wave-induced sagging moment is approximately estimated by using the existing rule of classification society. The ultimate compressive stress of double skin structure under the action of sagging moment is analyzed by using idealized structural unit method. Here an idealized plate element subjected to uniaxial load is formulated by idealizing the nonlinear behaviour of the actual element taking account of the initial imperfections in the form of initial deflection and welding residual stress. The interaction effect between the local and global failure in the structure is also taken into consideration. The accuracy of the present method is verified comparing with the present solution and the existing numerical and experimental results for unit member and welded box columns. The safety of the structure is evaluated using the concept of conventional central safety factor and the reliability assessment is made by using Cornel's MVFOSM method. The present procedure is then applied to upper deck structure of double skin product oil carrier. The influence of the initial imperfections and the yield stress of the material on the safety and reliability of the structure is investigated.

Examination and Quantification of Preservatives in Cosmetics for Children (어린이용 화장품에 사용되는 보존제 및 함유량 조사)

  • This study was conducted to determine 10 preservatives (benzyl alcohol (BAl), phenoxyethanol (PE), benzoic acid (BA), sorbic acid (SA), methyl paraben (MP), ethyl paraben (EP), propyl paraben (PP), isopropyl paraben (IPP), butyl paraben (BP), isobutyl paraben (IBP)) levels in 125 cosmetics (n = 125) for children by the simultaneous analysis of HPLC. The detection ranges were as follows; 0.01 ~ 0.91% (n = 35) for PE, 0.01 ~ 0.48% (n = 28) for BA, 0.01 ~ 0.78% (n = 9) for BAl, 0.01 ~ 0.11% (n = 3) for SA, 0.04 ~ 0.21% (n = 8) for MP, 0.02 ~ 0.09% (n = 8) for PP, and 0.04% (n = 1) for EP. The order of detection rates was cleanser (63%) > cream (48%) > sunscreen (46%) > lotion (38%) > oil (13%). At least one of target preservatives was contained in 50% (63/125) of samples and the content of the detected preservatives was within maximum allowed amount established by KFDA. Phenoxyethanol and benzoic acid were used more frequently than paraoxybenzoate esters (parabens) in cosmetics for children and the detected parabens was mainly the mixture of methyl paraben and propyl paraben.

  • Among various make-up products, foundations are widely used to express clear and flawless skin. Foundations can be classified by its formula to 3 types, liquid foundation, powder foundation, and oil dispersion foundation. Powder foundations are easy to carry and use, so it is commonly possessed. In the R&D point of view, the developing method of powder foundations can be classified again to 3 types. Dry-process, baked-process, and the wet slurry-process. The fact that the wet slurry-process goes through either the back injection method or the front injection method is previously known. The front injection process is used as the main method in this study. We observed the quality dependence on the kind of solvent and the powder coating system. In brief, when water was used as the main solvent, the hardness increased than when volatile silicones or hydrocarbons were used. And the sensory results were shown to prefer volatile solvents (silicones or hydrocarbons) over water. Similarly, when the amino acid-coating system was applied, the hardness was shown to increase, when silicone-coating system shown no specific change. By these results, tailor-made powder foundations targeting specific customer grades can be easily produced.

A Study on Field Seismic Data Processing using Migration Velocity Analysis (MVA) for Depth-domain Velocity Model Building (심도영역 속도모델 구축을 위한 구조보정 속도분석(MVA) 기술의 탄성파 현장자료 적용성 연구)

  • Migration velocity analysis (MVA) for creating optimum depth-domain velocities in seismic imaging was applied to marine long-offset multi-channel data, and the effectiveness of the MVA approach was demonstrated by the combinations of conventional data processing procedures. The time-domain images generated by conventional time-processing scheme has been considered to be sufficient so far for the seismic stratigraphic interpretation. However, when the purpose of the seismic imaging moves to the hydrocarbon exploration, especially in the geologic modeling of the oil and gas play or lead area, drilling prognosis, in-place hydrocarbon volume estimation, the seismic images should be converted into depth domain or depth processing should be applied in the processing phase. CMP-based velocity analysis, which is mainly based on several approximations in the data domain, inherently contains errors and thus has high uncertainties. On the other hand, the MVA provides efficient and somewhat real-scale (in depth) images even if there are no logging data available. In this study, marine long-offset multi-channel seismic data were optimally processed in time domain to establish the most qualified dataset for the usage of the iterative MVA. Then, the depth-domain velocity profile was updated several times and the final velocity-in-depth was used for generating depth images (CRP gather and stack) and compared with the images obtained from the velocity-in-time. From the results, we were able to confirm the depth-domain results are more reasonable than the time-domain results. The spurious local minima, which can be occurred during the implementation of full waveform inversion, can be reduced when the result of MVA is used as an initial velocity model.

Characteristics of Alcohol Fermentation in Oriental Melon by Different Yeast (효모 종류에 따른 참외의 알코올발효 특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate and compare the characteristics of alcohol fermentation in oriental melon by different yeast. As a result, no significant difference in pH, total acidity and sugar content was found in alcohol fermentation of oriental melon by different yeast. The pH was shown to be constantly maintained but the total acidity was shown to increase during fermentation process. The sugar content was rapidly decrease starting from 3 day of fermentation, and it was reduced to be approximately 7 oBrix after fermentation. For organic acid content, lactic and citric acid contents were shown to be the highest in all periods of fermentation, which revealed that lactic and citric acid were major organic acids. Free sugar content were shown to gradually decrease during the fermentation and to be rarely detected at 9 days of fermentation. Alcohol content was shown to be 14.20% at (C) S. cerevisiae RC-212, which was the highest content. It was shown to be more than 12% at other periods, which showed that no significant difference in alcohol content was found according to different yeast. For alcohol components, acetaldehyde content was shown to be the highest at (E) S. cerevisiae K1-V1116, and methanol content was shown to be relatively higher at (C) S. cerevisiae RC-212 and (D) S. bayanus EC-1118. N-propanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol and isoamyl alcohol, which belong to fusel oil, were shown to be produced at 3 day of fermentation and gradually increase. These results, no significant difference in physicochemical properties of alcohol fermentation in oriental melon by different yeast.

In vitro regeneration and the change of anatomical appearance in Poncirus trifoliata RAFIN. (탱자(Poncirus trifoliata RAFIN.)의 기내 재분화 및 조직학적 특성)

  • In this study, the induction regeneration of callus from immature embryo in trifoliata orange (Poncirus trifoliata RAFIN.) were accomplished. The embryogenic calli were induced from the immature embryo derived from seed when the calli were irradiated for 16hr at about 2,000 Lux in $\frac{1}{2}$ MS medium supplemented with 3% sucrose, and 44.4$\mu$M BA. Regeneration to whole plants was the most successful in MS medium containing 5.0$\mu$M BA. The yellowish callus was developed at 2 to 3 weeks of culture and the callus was changed from yellow to green at 5 to 6 weeks culture. In vitro regeneration was directly induced from embryogenic callus in MS medium containing 3% sucrose and 5.0$\mu$M BA. Multishoot was formed at 16 weeks culture. Moreover, when the root-formed plantlet was transplanted to soil, they grew to a whole plant. The compact cultured-cells were observed by light microscope after 4 weeks of cultivation and the embryogenic clumps were formed about the 5 weeks. At the same time, the neighboring cells were liquefied. In addition, differentiation of leaf and stem from the callus was observed after 12 weeks. The developed oil sacs and the profacicular cambium of the immature leaf were observed after 18 weeks. Therefore, we can see the considerable changes of cell arrangements according to the developmental stages of calli from trifoliata orange.

Characteristics of Local Perilla Collected in Kangwon province of Korea (강원지역 재래종 들깨의 생육특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to examine the variations in 42 local perilla collected in Kangwon province of Korea and to provide basic informations which can be utilize in perilla breeding programs. The results obtained were summarized as the follows. Maturing period was widely distributed from 109 to 140 days. The maturing periods of most collections were 116 to 130 days(95.2%). and that 4.8% of collections shown maturing period of below 115 days and above 131 days. Three varieties 109 day of maturing period were selected among local perilla collected from Yanggu gun. Stem length was ranged from 80 to 140 cm. The stem length of 111 to 130 cm, below 111 cm, and above 131 cm were 54.8%, 38.6%, and 16.7%, respectively. The number of cluster per plant was distributed 23 to 120. The distribution of cluster numbers were 40 to 70, under 40, and above 100 was 57.2%, 16.7%, and 11.9%, respectively. The number of seed capsules was distributed 20 to 40 and the collections ranged from at of 30 to 35 was 38.1 %. Seed cluster length was distributed from 5.1 to 9.0 cm and that ranged from 6.1 to 8.0 cm was 64.3%, 1,000 grain weight ranged from 1.7 to 3.8 g. The distribution of 1,000 grain weight is 2.4 to 2.6 g, 3.0 to 3.2 g, and below 2.9 g was 35.7%, 19.1%, respectively. The 1,000 grain most weight 3.8 g was selected among local perilla collected in Hwacheon gun.

Traditional Knowledge on the Regional Folk Plants in Inland of Chungcheongnam-do Province, Korea (충남 내륙지역 민속식물의 전통지식)

  • To survey and collect the traditional knowledge on the regional folk plants, we interviewed 125 (male 37, female 88) native inhabitants in inland, 12 cities and counties of Chungnam province from March to October, 2011. The results showed that the regional folk plants in inland of Chungnam province consisted of a total 273 taxa; 92 families, 225 genera, 237 species, 4 subspecies, 29 varieties and 3 forms. Of 273 taxa surveyed ; 5 Korean endemic plants, 8 rare plants and 16 naturalized plants were also included. And of 273 taxa, cultivated plants were 82 taxa and 191 taxa were wild plants. The analysis of use by usage for 273 taxa showed that the edible use was the highest with 981 times, followed by medicinal with 439 times, material with 179 times, oil with 68 times, respectively. The leaf of plant was the most useful part, followed by stem and fruit. The consistency comparison between the Korean name and the local name were the highest in 50's and the lowest in 90's.

Inhibitory Effect of Triticum aestivum Ethanol Extract on Lipid Accumulation in 3T3-L1 Preadipocytes (3T3-L1 세포에서 소맥엽 에탄올추출물의 지질생성 억제효과)

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is known to be frequently associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. We examined the effects of EtOH extracts from Triticum aestivum on lipid accumulation during the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes to screening the candidate materials in preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The lipid level in adipocytes was determined by Oil Red O staining. The treatment of 50% ethanol, but not water and 100% ethanol extracts, from Triticum aestivum at concentration of 0.5 $mg/ml$ inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells, revealing no cell toxicity. Thus, the fractions of $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc and BuOH were separated from 50% EtOH extract to characterize anti-adipogenic effect. The $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction at concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$ effectively inhibited the lipid accumulation in the adipocytes compared to those of EtOAc and BuOH at concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$. The intracellular triglyceride accumulation also was significantly reduced by treatment of $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction in concentration-dependent manner. Western blot analysis showed that the $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction attenuated the intracelluar level of fatty acid synthase(FAS) accompanied by attenuated expression of Peroxidase proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ ($PPAR{\gamma}$) adipogenic transcription factor. These results suggest that $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction from 50% EtOH extract of Triticum aestivum may has the potent anti-adipogenic effects by inhibiting the transactivation of $PPAR{\gamma}$.

Comparison of Flow Characteristics for the Development of a C-Type Strainer with Its Inlet and Outlet on a Straight Line (유입·유출구가 일직선상인 C형 스트레이너 개발을 위한 유동특성 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a strainer that could protect a flow system by blocking the introduction of foreign substances into the pipe of industrial or architectural facilities. Strainers are installed at the front tip of valves, machines, or pumps in the piping line of clean water, oil, or gas. There are Y-type, U-type, and T-type strainers. The study identified problems with the Y-type strainers, develop a "C-type strainer with its inlet and outlet on a straight line" as a more improved new model, and compared them in functions in a full-scale strainer test. The study conducted a full-scale strainer test according to four situations at the flow laboratory of Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science by using the old Y-type strainer and C-type strainer 50A. The test results show that the C-type strainer had a higher capacity coefficient(Kv) than the Y-type one, recording 74.9% when there was no screen, 54.5% when there were no foreign substances in the screen, 54.2% when there was a 15% accumulation of foreign substances, and 52.4% when there was a 30% accumulation of foreign substances. The investigator conducted a test only with the 50A type due to the limitations of life-size strainers, but the results demonstrate that the C-type strainer had better flow characteristics than the Y-type one.
