생약중의 감초에 관한 연구(I) HPLC에 의한 Glycyrrhizin 및 Glycyrrhetinic acid의 정량 (Studies on Licorice in Drug Preparations(I) Determination of Glycyrrhizin and Glycyrrhetinic acid by HPLC.)

  • Glycyrrhizin (GA) content in licorice was determined by a couple of methods using HPLC, respectively. In Method(I), GA content itself was determined from the licorice aqueous extract, while in Method (II) glycyrrhetinic acid (GHeA ; the aglicone of GA) content corresponding to the quantity of GA was measured from the chloroform extract of the hydrolyzed product of licorice aqueous extract. A reverse phase column Hibar Lichrosorb RP-18 (E. Merck) was used as the stationary phase. As the mobile phase MeOH: $H_{2}O$(0.05M-$NaH_{2}PO_{4}$)=58 : 42 solution in Method (I), and MeOH: $H_{2}O $: AcOH=78; 19: 3 solution in Method (II) were suitable, respectively. The value obtained by Method (II) appeared slightly higher than that by Method (I). The effect of some other herbal drugs on the assay of GA quantity in mixed sample was also observed in both above two methods. By Method (I) Cassiae Cortex, Rehmaniae Rhizoma, Paeoniae Radix, and Angelicae Radix gave the subtractive effect on the amount of GA compared with the value from licorice alone. In the case of Method (II) Cassiae Cortex and Rehmaniae Rhizoma appeared to have subtractive effect but Paeoniae Radix and Angelicae Radix scarcely showed any influence. Pachymae Fungus did not affect the GA content at all. It seems that glycyrrhizin in licorice interacts with certain components of other herbal drugs.

Hepatoprotective Lignan Compound from Schizandrae Fructus on Tacrine-induced Cytotoxicity in Hep G2 Cells

  • In the course of search for hepatoprotective agents from oriental traditional medicines, one compound was isolated from the MeOH extract of the fruits of Schizandra chinensis, and its structure was determined as gomisin J(1). The evaluation for hepatoprotective activity of isolated compound 1 on drug-induced cytotoxicity was conducted, and compound 1 showed protective effect with an EC$_{50}$value of 86.0 ${\pm}$ 5.3 ${\mu}$M against tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells. One of the well-known hepatoprotective agents, silybin, used as a positive control, and the hepatoprotective effect of compound 1 is similar with that of silybin (EC$_{50}$ value = 90.5 ${\pm}$ 9.8 ${\mu}$M).

  • When an alternating current is supplied to a super-conducting multi-stranded cable, the quench current value of the cable was observed to be less than the simple summation of individual quench current value of each strand. One of the causes for such a degradation was attributed to the nonuniform of the current distribution in multi-stranded cable due to magnetic mutual coupling among the strands. The degradation of the superconducting cable is evaluated theoretically by taking into account the magnetic coupling among the strands.

Gomisin J with Protective Effect Against t-BHP-Induced Oxidative Damage in HT22 Cells from Schizandra chinensis

  • Four lignan compounds including gomisin J (1), schizandrin (2), gomisin A (3), and angeloyl gomisin H (4) have been isolated from the MeOH extract of Schizandra chinensis fruits. The evaluation for protective effect of compounds 1-4 against tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP)-induced cytotoxicity in hippocampal HT22 cell line was conducted. Compound 1 showed significant protective effect with an $EC_{50}$ value of $43.3{\pm}2.3\;{\mu}M$, whereas compounds 2-4 were inactive. Trolox, one of the well-known antioxidant, used as a positive control, and also showed protective effect with an $EC_{50}$ value of $213.8{\pm}8.4\;{\mu}M$. These results suggest that compound 1 may possess the neuroprotective activity against oxidant-induced cellular injuries.

Chemical Composition and Nutritional Evaluation of Variously Treated Defatted Rice Polishing for Broiler Feeding

  • The study was conducted to improve the nutritive value of defatted rice polishing (DRP). DRP was treated with various concentrations of HCl, NaOH, $H_2O_2$ and Kemzyme-H $F^{(R)} and the effect on its chemical composition and nutritive value in broiler chicks was observed. The treatments levels of 0.4 N HCl, 0.2 N NaOH and 6% $H_2O_2$ were selected from many concentrations of HCl, NaOH and $H_2O_2$ tried earlier on DRP. The selection was made on the basis of release of nutrients from DRP. The Kemzyme-H $F^{(R)} was used at rate of 0.1% of DRP. The selected concentrations of HCl, NaOH, and $H_2O_2$ were then used for treatment of DRP that was used in biological experiments. Two hundred and forty, day-old Hubbard male broiler chicks (38-40 g) were randomly divided into 48 experimental units with five chicks each. Each chemically treated DRP was incorporated into broiler diets at 10, 20 or 30% levels replacing yellow corn from the control feed and thus sixteen experimental feeds were prepared. These feeds were randomly assigned to 48 experimental units such that there were three replicates of chicks on each diet. The results of the study suggest that DRP can be effectively used in broiler diets at 20% level. The best weight gain and feed conversion ratio were observed with diet containing 20% level of DRP treated with 6% $H_2O_2$. The diets containing 30% levels of treated DRP were uneconomical, as excess use of oil was required to compensate the energy needs of the birds.

정전용량센서를 이용한 W/O형 유화연료의 정전용량 측정 (The measurement of capacitance of W/O type emulsified fuel using by capacitance sensor)

  • We designed capacitance sensor in order to examine characteristics of W/O type emulsified fuel, so it concluded the following conclusions. The capacitance value of emulsified fuel, using with capacitance sensor, increases as water content increases due to the coalescence. When surfactant increases, the capacitance value decreases, the condition of W/O type emulsified fuel was maintained stably. There was revealed the capacitance value difference of W/O type emulsified fuel in in according to water content. We checked the phase separation of emulsified fuel with the capacitance value difference. The surfactant(HLB=5.4) had better stable condition than surfactant(HLB=4.3). Also, we confirmed that two mixture surfactants were better than one surfactant.

Evaluation of Functionality and Added Value Factors to the Usage of Mobile Telecommunication Services

  • Purpose - This study aims to provide a brief understanding of usability and its extended models with TAM as well as identifying additional determinants that had been suggested in previous studies on mobile services. Research design, data, and methodology - Empirical data were collected by conducting a field survey of potential mobile application service users. The call for participation was also made in mobile related application issues, which were widely discussed. Result - The ease of use and usefulness had a significantly positive influence on attitude and intention. It also was revealed that added value services can offer practical value to customers. Thus, positive attitudes toward the adoption of services by customers are present when they perceive higher usefulness and ease of use of mobile application services. Conclusion - It was indicated that customers who are more inclined to try new products or who have a higher demand for new things tend to think about those functionalities and added value mobile application services from the perspective of usefulness and ease of use and operation.

AHP를 이용한 지역브랜드의 경쟁력 분석 (An Analysis of the Value of Regional Brand Index by Using AHP)

  • This study developed three indices for evaluating regional brand value, i.e. awareness index, experience index, and attractiveness index. We used an AHP approach to estimate these indices for 151 rural regions (151 administrative jurisdictions in Korea). Our estimation results show that regional brand index varies considerably across regions by the individual characteristics of interviewee. First, the value of regional brand of local jurisdiction is higher than that of more integrated administrative jurisdiction. Second, the brand value of Gangwon and Jeolla region is higher than that of other regions. Third, the interviewees with school children in the age of 40-50 are likely to have higher regional brand value. The estimation results also show a need for different strategies to develop and improve regional brand.

In vitro Free Radical Scavenging and Hepatoprotective Compound from Sanguisorbae Radix

  • In the course of searching for hepatoprotective agents from natural products, four compounds were isolated from the MeOH extract of Sanguisorbae Radix, as guided by their DPPH free radical scavenging activity. The structures were determined as 4,5-dimethoxy-3-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester (1), (+)-gallocatechin (2), methyl $6-O-galloyl-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (3), and pomolic acid $3-O-[{\alpha}-L-arabinopyranoside]-28-O-[{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl]$ ester (ziyu-glycoside I) (4). Compounds 2 and 3 showed significant DPPH free radical scavenging effects, exhibiting $IC_{50}$ values of 11.4 and $13.0\;{\mu}M$, respectively. L-Ascorbic acid was used as a positive control and exhibited the $IC_{50}$ value of $50.3\;{\mu}M$. In evaluation of the hepatoprotective activity of the isolated compounds on drug-induced cytotoxicity, compound 2 showed the significant hepatoprotective effect with the $EC_{50}$ value of $91.84\;{\pm}\;11.0\;{\mu}M$ on tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells, while silybin, a positive control, exhibited $EC_{50}$ value of $122.4\;{\pm}\;12.5\;{\mu}M$.

사료에 첨가된 Spirulina, Chlorella 및 Astaxanthin이 비단잉어 체색에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Spirulina, Chlorella, and Astaxanthin on the Body Color of Red- and White-colored Carp, Cyprinus carpio)

  • We experimentally investigated effects of four concentrations (4, 6, 8, and 10%) each of dietary Spirulina and Chiorella, as well as four concentrations of dietary astaxanthin (40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm in Carophyll Pink), on the body color of red- and white-colored carp, Cyprinus carpio. The total carotenoid concentration in the skin tissue of the red parts of the carp fed dietary Spirulina, Chiorella, and astaxanthin increased up to the second week of the experiment but decreased thereafter. The redness value of the Spirulina-and Chiorella-treated fish decreased up to the sixth week of the experiment and increased thereafter. However, the redness value of the astaxanthin-treated fish consistently increased, beginning in the second week. Of the three agents tested, astaxanthin in Carophyll Pink was the most effective at enhancing the redness of both red- and white-colored carp. The redness value of the fish did not statistically differ among the various concentrations of astaxanthin. Therefore, dietary supplementation with 40ppm astaxanthin would be the most economical method for enhancing the redness of red- and white-colored carp fingerlings.
