  • Optical burst switching networks usually employ one-way reservation by sending a burst control packet with a specific offset time, before transmitting each data burst Same. Due to such a Property, burst-contentions occur when multiple bursts contend for the same wavelength in the same output link simultaneously in a node, leading to burst losses, eventually degrading the quality of service. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a dynamic routing algorithm using minimum local state information in order to decrease burst-contentions. In this proposed scheme, if burst loss rate exceeds a threshold value at a certain node, a new alternative routing path is chosen according to burst priority and location of burst generation, which enables the contending bursts to detour around the congested link. Moreover, for reducing the effect of sending bursts on the primary path due to the alternative path, we also apply a minimum path-cost based routing on link-cost concept. Our simulation results show that proposed scheme improves the network performance in terms of burst loss probability and throughput by comparing with conventional one.

  • The first gene (${\alpha}$-gal1) encoding an extracellular ${\alpha}$-Dgalactosidase from the thermophilic fungus Talaromyces emersonii was cloned and characterized. The ${\alpha}$-gal1 gene consisted of an open reading frame of 1,792 base pairs interrupted by six introns that encoded a mature protein of 452 amino acids, including a 24 amino acid secretory signal sequence. The translated protein had highest identity with other fungal ${\alpha}$-galactosidases belonging to glycosyl hydrolase family 27. The ${\alpha}$-gal1 gene was overexpressed as a secretory protein with an N-terminal histidine tag in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. Recombinant ${\alpha}$-Gal1 was secreted into the culture medium as a monomeric glycoprotein with a maximal yield of 10.75 mg/l and purified to homogeneity using Hisbinding nickel-agarose affinity chromatography. The purified enzyme was maximally active at $70^{\circ}C$, pH 4.5, and lost no activity over 10 days at $50^{\circ}C$. ${\alpha}$-Gal1 followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics ($V_{max}\;of\;240.3{\mu}M/min/mg,\;K_m\;of\;0.294 mM$) and was inhibited competitively by galactose ($K_m{^{obs}}$ of 0.57 mM, $K_i$ of 2.77 mM). The recombinant T. emersonii ${\alpha}$-galactosidase displayed broad substrate preference, being active on both oligo- and polymeric substrates, yet had strict specificity for the ${\alpha}$-galactosidic linkage. Owing to its substrate preference and noteworthy stability, ${\alpha}$-Gal1 is of particular interest for possible biotechnological applications involving the processing of plant materials.

  • We present results of our investigation of the radio intrinsic brightness temperatures of compact radio jets. The intrinsic brightness temperatures of about 100 compact radio jets at 2, 5, 8, 15, and 86 GHz are estimated based on large VLBI surveys conducted in 2001-2003 (or in 1996 for the 5 GHz sample). The multi-frequency intrinsic brightness temperatures of the sample of jets are determined by a statistical method relating the observed brightness temperatures with the maximal apparent jet speeds, assuming one representative intrinsic brightness temperature for a sample of jets at each observing frequency. By investigating the observed brightness temperatures at 15 GHz in multiple epochs, we find that the determination of the intrinsic brightness temperature for our sample is affected by the flux density variability of individual jets at time scales of a few years. This implies that it is important to use contemporaneous VLBI observations for the multi-frequency analysis of intrinsic brightness temperatures. Since our analysis is based on the VLBI observations conducted in 2001-2003, the results are not strongly affected by the flux density variability. We find that the intrinsic brightness temperature $T_0$ increases as $T_0{\propto}{\nu}^{\xi}_{obs}$ with ${\xi}=0.7$ below a critical frequency ${\nu}_c{\approx}9GHz$ where the energy loss begins to dominate the emission. Above ${\nu}_c$, $T_0$ decreases with ${\xi}=-1.2$, supporting the decelerating jet model or particle cascade model. We also find that the peak value of $T_0{\approx}3.4{\times}10^{10}$ K is close to the equipartition temperature, implying that the VLBI cores observable at 2-86 GHz may be representing jet regions where the magnetic field energy dominates the total energy in jets.

  • This study was to investigate whether the viability of Hanwoo IVM/IVF/IVC blastocysts was maintained after vitrification and thawing. In vitro produced Hanwoo blastocysts were vitrified by two-step method: equilibrated in EG20 for 3 min, and then exposed in EFS40 [40% ethylene glycol (EG), 18% ficoll and 10.26% sucrose in mDPBS containing 10% FBS ]and vitrified in L$N_2$for 30 - 45 sec. After thawing, in vitro survival was assessed as the re-expanded and hatched rates at 24 hand 48 h, respectively. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows: From the 12 replicates, 52.5% of Hanwoo blastocysts were produced in vitro at day 7 after IVF. When the effects of freezing solution to the embryo survival were examined, there is no significant toxicity in exposure (100.0, 73.8%) compared to that af control group (100.0, 87.0%). However, when embryos were vitrified, high survival (86.2, 55.4%) was obtained although it was significantly lower than those of exposure and control group (p<0.05). When the in vitro survival of vitrified embryos according to developmental stage and culture day were examined, it showed that more advanced embryo stage exhibited a significantly higher survival rate irrespective of culture day (p<0.05). Also, even in the same development stage, the in vitro survival of day 7 embryos (re-expanded: 75.0~87.5%, hatched: 21.4~66.7%) was higher than those of day 8 embryos(re-expanded: 58.6~78.3%, hatched: 10.3~52.2%). Therefore, these results suggested that in vitro produced Hanwoo blastocysts can be successfully cryopreserved by simple two-step vitrification method using EFS40 freezing solution, particularly at the expanded and early hatching blastocyst stage regardless of embryo culture duration (day 7 or day 8 after IVF).

  • A CpG island is a short stretch of DNA in which the frequency of the CG dinucleotide is higher than other regions. CpG islands are present in the promoters and exonic regions of approximately $30{\sim}60$% of mammalian genes so they are useful markers for genes in organisms containing 5-methylcytosine in their genomes. Recent evidence supports the notion that the hypermethylation of CpG island, by silencing tumor suppressor genes, plays a major causal role in cancer, which has been described in almost every tumor types. In this respect, CpG island search by computational methods is very helpful for cancer research and computational promoter and gene predictions. I therefore developed a window program (called CpGi) on the basis of CpG island criteria defined by D. Takai and P. A. Jones. The program 'CpGi' was implemented in Visual C++ 6.0 and can determine the locations of CpG islands using diverse parameters (%GC, Obs (CpG)/Exp (CpG), window size, step size, gap value, # of CpG, length) specified by user. The analysis result of CpGi provides a graphical map of CpG islands and G+C% plot, where more detailed information on CpG island can be obtained through pop-up window. Two human contigs, i.e. AP00524 (from chromosome 22) and NT_029490.3 (from chromosome 21), were used to compare the performance of CpGi and two other public programs for the accuracy of search results. The two other programs used in the performance comparison are Emboss-CpGPlot and CpG Island Searcher that are web-based public CpG island search programs. The comparison result showed that CpGi is on a level with or outperforms Emboss-CpGPlot and CpG Island Searcher. Having a simple and easy-to-use user interface, CpGi would be a very useful tool for genome analysis and CpG island research. • Objective: This study aimed to identify the genetic diversity and population structure of Mongolian horse populations according to the province of residence (Khentii, KTP; Uvs, USP; Omnogovi and Dundgovi, GOP; Khovsgol, KGP) using 14 microsatellite (MS) markers. Methods: A total of 269 whole blood samples were obtained from the four populations (KTP, USP, GOP, KGP) geographically distinct provinces. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted using 14 MS markers (AHT4, ASB2, ASB17, ASB23, CA425, HMS1, HMS2, HMS3, HMS6, HMS7, HTG4, HTG6, HTG7, and VHL20), as recommended by the International Society for Animal Genetics. Capillary electrophoresis was conducted using the amplified PCR products, alleles were determined. Alleles were used for statistical analysis of genetic variability, Nei's DA genetic distance, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), factorial corresponding analysis (FCA), and population structure. Results: On average, the number of alleles, expected heterozygosity (HExp), observed heterozygosity (HObs), and polymorphic information content among all populations were 11.43, 0.772, 0.757, and 0.737, respectively. In the PCoA and FCA, GOP, and KGP were genetically distinct from other populations, and the KTP and USP showed a close relationship. The two clusters identified using Nei's DA genetic distance analysis and population structure highlighted the presence of structurally clear genetic separation. Conclusion: Overall, the results of this study suggest that genetic diversity between KTP and USP was low, and that between GOP and KGP was high. It is thought that these results will help in the effective preservation and improvement of Mongolian horses through genetic diversity analysis and phylogenetic relationships.

  • The solvolysis rate constants of 2,4-dimethoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (1) in 30 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, with sensitivity values of $0.93{\pm}0.14$ and $0.65{\pm}0.06$ for l and m, respectively. These l and m values can be considered to support a $S_N2$ reaction pathway. The activation enthalpies (${\Delta}H^{\neq}$) were 12.4 to $14.6kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ and the activation entropies (${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) were -15.5 to -$32.3kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, which is consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. The solvent kinetic isotope effects (SKIE) were 1.74 to 1.86, which is also in accord with the $S_N2$ mechanism and was possibly assisted using a general-base catalysis. The values of product selectivity (S) for solvolyses of 1 in alcohol/water mixtures was 0.57 to 6.5, which is also consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. Third-order rate constants, $k_{ww}$ and $k_{aa}$, were calculated from the rate constants ($k_{obs}$), together with $k_{aw}$ and $k_{wa}$ calculated from the intercept and slope of the plot of 1/S vs. [water]/[alcohol]. The calculated rate constants, $k_{calc}$ ($k_{ww}$, $k_{aw}$, $k_{wa}$ and $k_{aa}$), are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental values, supporting the stoichiometric solvation effect analysis.

  • A new macrocyclic ligand 1,15,18-triaza-3,4;12,13-dibenzo-5,8,11-cycloeicosane (NdienOdien$H_4$ = $N_3O_3$) has been synthesized and identified by element analysis, NMR and IR spectrophotometry. Stepwise protonation constants of ligand are determined by potentiometry in 95% methanol solution(I = 0.1 mol $dm^{-3}$, $Me_4$NCl). log $K_1$;log $K_2$;log $K_3$ = 9.1;8.1;3.6.The kinetics of the acid-promoted dissociation reactions of complex cations of nickel(II) and copper(III) with NdienOdien and NdienOen macrocyclic ligands having, respectively, 17 and 20 ring members, have been studied spectrophotometrically in HCl$O_4$ NaCl$O_4$ aqueous solutions. From the temperature effect on kinetic constant ($k_{obs}$), the parameters of activation(${\Delta}H^{\neq}$, ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) of dissociation reaction for $ML^{2+}$ with $H^+$ ion have been determined. We have proposed the possible mechanism of the reaction from the data obtained.

  • This study was carried out to figure out the dietary intake of pregnant women in Daegu area. A total of 467 pregnant women was recruited at two hospitals in this area to collect the information on dietary intakes, general characteristics, and anthropometric measurements using an interview. Forty-seven women (10.1%) were in the first trimester, 101 women (21.6%) in the second trimester, and 319 women (68.3%) in the third trimester. The mean age, prepregnant weight and height of subjects were not significantly different among the trimester groups. The mean daily nutrient intakes of energy, fat, protein, carbohydrates, phosphate, sodium, vitamin B$_1$, vitamin B$_2$, and vitamin C were significantly different among the trimester groups, but the other nutrients were not different. For the calcium and iron, the percentage of subjects consumed less than 75% of the Korean RDA was over 80%, and for other nutrients such as energy, vitamin B$_1$, and vitamin B$_2$ over 50% of subjects consumed less than 75% of the Korean RDA in the first trimester. The correlations between nutrient intakes and weight gain during pregnancy showed different patterns among the trimester groups. The mean adequacy ratio and dietary variety scores were not significantly different among the trimester groups. The amount of food intake from cereals and cereal products were higher during the second and the third trimester compared to the first trimester, but those of the other food groups were not significantly different. In conclusion, nutrient intakes of the pregnant women for iron, calcium and some vitamins were inadequate and nutritional management programs for these nutrients are necessary.
