도심 아파트 단지 화단에 나타나는 매미 약충의 토양 서식처 특성 (Soil Habitat Characteristics of Cicada Nymph in an Urban Apartment Garden)

  • Cicada is a very familiar insect to people but habitat characteristics of them are not well known. To investigate habitat characteristics of cicada nymph, plant species, plant cover, soil hardness, accumulated organic mass, organic content in soil, and root density were investigated at 11 sites in an apartment complex garden in Seoul. Selected sites had different densities of cicada nymph case above the ground. Density of cicada nymph case was positively correlated with accumulated organic mass, organic content in soil, and root density and negatively correlated with soil hardness. Even though shrub coverage was not linearly correlated with the density of cicada nymph case, 80% cover of shrub was necessary for the high density of them. Data in this study suggested that organic matter in addition to root density be the primary limitation factor of cicada nymph and high amount of litter-fall decrease soil hardness through the increase of soil organic matter. This study suggests that the density of cicada nymph can be managed through organic content in soil.

RNAi에 의한 담배가루이(Bemisia tabaci, 가루이과, 노린재목)의 개체군 밀도변화 (Change of population density of tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci, Aleyrodidae, Hemiptera) by RNAi)

  • Ninety genes randomly selected from tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) cDNA library was studied for selecting target gene in order to control of tobacco whitefly using TRV-VIGS vector (tobacco rattle virus-virus induced gene silencing vector) with RNAi. First of all, the occurrence of B. tabaci adult according to agro-infiltration of TRV was no significant difference. And that of TRV inserted tobacco whitefly cDNA showed a significant difference in each sample. P CV and N CV sample were more than 80% could be confirmed in 5 samples, for example, wh11, wh36, wh46, wh50 and wh71. Lastly, the occurrence of nymph and egg also showed a significant difference in each sample. That could be confirmed in 11 samples, for example, wh01, wh09, wh10, wh15, wh16, wh23, wh24, wh48, wh64 and wh66. In case of wh46, wh50 and wh71 sample could be confirmed that occurrence of B. tabaci adult was many, but occurrence of B. tabaci nymph and egg was a little. So sample showed a physioecological good effect to control of whitefly need to be investigated variation of gene expression in whitefly body using qRT-PCR through individual test.

Test of Insecticidal Efficacy of Some Commercial Natural Products against Trialeurodes vaporariorum(Homoptera : Aleyrodidae), Bemisia tabaci(Homoptera : Aleyrodidae), and Spodoptera litura(Lepidoptera : Noctuidae)

  • The greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) are serious insect pests that have a wide host range including cucumber, tomato, and pepper. In this study, we tested larvicidal efficacy of several on-the-market environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) to select the effective products after the target pests were stabilized in indoor rearing condition. The developmental periods of two whiteflies are as follows: in the case of T. vaporariorum, egg duration is 9.6 days and nymph is 18.9 days, and in the case of B. tabaci, egg duration is 7.4 days and nymph is 15.2 days under $25^{\circ}C$ with relative humidity (RH) of $60{\pm}5%$ and a photoperiod of 16 L:8D. The total period of T. vaporariorum was 5 days longer than B. tabaci. Among 22 EFAMs six products showed more than 60% of insecticide efficacy against T. vaporariorum BTV B, BTV D, BTV G, BTV L, BTV M, and BTV S. On the other hand, seven EFAM products showed over 60% of insecticide efficacy against B. tabaci BTV D, BTV G, BTV K, BTV L, BTV M, BTV N, and BTV U. In the case of Spodptera litura previously, 16 EFAMs were tested against $2^{nd}$ instar S. litura, and six EFAMs were found to have more than 90% efficacy. Test of these six EFAMs against entire larval stages were performed in this study. Although some of these products showed still more than 90% of insecticidal efficacy against up to $3^{rd}$ instar larvae, the efficacy of these EFAMs sharply decreased as ages increase, resulting in less than 60% of efficacy of the products at most. This result indicates the difficulty to control S. litura with the on-the-market EFAMs alone under economic injury level. Collectively, it is required to find more EFAMs, and find alternative method, and combined way of controlling to control those insect pests tested in this study.

Demodex Blepharitis: An Analysis of Nine Patients

  • Inflammatory eyelid symptoms are common in primary care and there have been several reports on Demodex blepharitis. In the present study, we evaluate the 9 patients with Demodex blepharitis, who showed inflammation of the eyelids, dry eye, and cylindrical dandruff at the base of the eyelashes. The causative species from all patients was Demodex folliculorum of either the adult or nymph stage. Two patients had recurrent chalazion and 3 patients had keratitis. Weekly lid scrubs with 50% tee tree oil were performed for 6 weeks. After treatment, the symptoms of blepharitis and keratitis had improved in all patients. This case report provides clinical reference source for the proper treatment of ocular demodicosis.

유기농 가지재배에서 담배가루이 방제를 위한 천연물질 효과 (The Environment-friendly Materials Selection for Control the Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) on Organic Eggplant Cultivation)

  • 가지 담배가루이 친환경 방제기술을 개발하고자, 난황유 등 8종의 천연물질을 가지 정식 후 7일 간격으로 살포하면서 생육을 조사한 결과 님제처리에서 가장 양호한 경향이었다. 담배가루이 성충과 약충의 발생은 디노테퓨란약제처리에서 가장 적었고, 친환경자재 중에서는 님제 처리에서 가장 적었다. 수량은 디노테퓨란 약제처리에서 가장 많았고, 친환경 자재에서는 님제, 고추씨유 등이 많았으며, 고삼제 은행과육 등에서 적었다. 님제 처리의 경우 무처리에 비하여 69% 많았고, 디노테퓨란약제에 비해 52% 낮은 수량을 나타내었다.

단풍나무류 8종의 초식에 대한 방어전략 탐색 (A Study of the Defense Mechanism against Herbivores of 8 Species of the Genus Acer)

  • 목본식물의 초식에 대한 방어 전략을 알아보고자 8종의 단풍나무속 수종의 잎에 대하여 형태적 특성, domatia 구조와 수, 초식곤충과 응애 서식 여부 등을 관찰 조사하였다. 조사대상 수목들은 강원도 치악산, 청태산, 방태산, 태백산과 윈주시에 생육 중인 8수종에서 엽시료를 채취하여 2009년 4월부터 7월까지 관찰, 조사하였다. 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 당단풍, 고로쇠 및 복장나무의 domatia는 tuft type, 단풍나무, 신나무, 복자기와 시닥나무는 pocket+tuft type, 산겨릅나무는 pocket type 임이 밝혀졌다. 엽당 domatia 평균 갯수는 산겨릅나무에서 20.2개/엽으로 가장 많았고, 신나무에서 4.2개/엽으로 가장 적었다. 엽표면의 털은 단풍나무, 당단풍, 신나무 및 복장나무는 응모(villous), 고로쇠나무와 복자기는 연모(pilose), 시닥나무는 강모(strigose)였다. 일반적으로 털의 밀도는 잎 뒷면이 앞면보다 높았다. 단풍나무, 당단풍, 산겨릅나무 및 시닥나무에서만 엽맥의 말단부에 소량의 단물이 분비됨을 확인하였다. 엽당 응애의 개체수는 수종간 고도의 통계적 유의성이 인정되었으며, 엽당 응애 개체수 평균은 시닥나무가 9.2마리로 가장 많았으며, 다음으로 복장나무, 당단풍, 복자기가 순이었다. 단풍나무류 잎을 가해하는 미소절지동물류는 진사진딧물, 단풍알락진딧물, 나무이, 혹응애, 매미충 등이었으며, 총개체수는 혹응애, 진사진딧물, 나무이, 단풍알락진딧물, 매미충 순이었다. 이들의 천적으로는 육식성 응애, 말벌, 그 약충, 광대노린재 약충, 등이 확인되었으며, 고동털개미와 곰개미는 진딧물과 상리공생을 하여 단풍나무류의 초식피해를 가중시킴을 확인하였다. 육식성 응애가 진사진딧물을 공격하여 체액을 빨아먹는 것을 확인하였으면, 이는 domatia가 중재하는 응애와 식물의 상리공생의 증거라 판단된다. 이러한 결과는 온대 활엽수종에서 이러한 응애와의 상리공생이 보편화되어 있음을 암시하는 것이라 사료된다.
