  • The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of substituting bread by-product (BBP) for barley grain in high concentrate fattening diets for kids on nutrient intake, growth performance, and nutrient digestibility. Twenty-eight Baladi kids (body weight=17.1${\pm}$1.0 kg) were assigned randomly to 4 experimental finishing diets (7 kids/treatment) in a completely randomized design for 70 days. The control (CON) diet contained 20, 60, 11, 7 and 2% (DM basis) alfalfa hay, barley grain, soybean meal, corn grain, and mineral and vitamin mix, respectively. Bread by-product substituted barley grain by 10, 20 and 30% of the diet DM in the LBBP, MBBP, and HBBP diets, respectively. Dry matter intakes for the CON, LBBP and MBBP diets were similar (p>0.05; avg.=592 g/day), however, kids fed the HBBP diet had a lower (p<0.05) DM intake (451 g/day). Organic matter and CP intakes showed similar patterns to that observed for DM. Dietary treatments did not affect (p>0.05) average daily gain for kids fed the CON, LBBP and MBBP diets (avg.=150 g/day). Final body weights for kids fed the CON, LBBP and MBBP diets (avg. 27.1 kg) were greater (p<0.05) than for kids fed the HBBP diet (23.7 kg). Feed to gain ratio was greater for the CON, LBBP and MBBP diets (avg. 3.9) compared with the HBBP diet (5.0). No significant (p>0.05) effect of the dietary treatment was observed for DM, OM and NDF digestibility. Substituting BBP for barley grain up to 20% of the diet DM did not affect nutrient intake, growth performance and nutrient digestibility of kids and resulted in a decrease in feed cost.

  • A series of in vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the mixture of Tween 80 and cellulolytic enzymes (xylanase and cellulase) on total tract nutrient digestibility and rumen cellulolytic bacterial adhesion rates in Holstein steers. Ground timothy hay sprayed with various levels of Tween 80 and cellulolytic enzymes was used as substrates in an in vitro experiment to find out the best combinations for DM degradation. The application level of 2.5% (v/w) Tween 80 and the combination of 5 U xylanase and 2.5 U cellulase per gram of ground timothy hay (DM basis) resulted in the highest in vitro dry matter degradation rate (p<0.05). Feeding the same timothy hay to Holstein steers also improved in vivo nutrient (DM, CP, CF, NDF and ADF) digesibilities compared to non-treated hay (p<0.05). Moreover, Tween 80 and enzyme combination treatment increased total ruminal VFA and concentrations of propionic acid and isovaleric acid with decreased acetate to propionate ratio (p<0.001). However, adhesion rates of Fibrobacter succinogenes and Ruminococcus flavefaciens determined by Real Time PCR were not influenced by the treatment while that of Ruminococcus albus was decreased (p<0.05). The present results indicate that a mixture of Tween 80 and cellulolytic enzymes can improve rumen environment and feed digestibility with variable influence on cellulolytic bacterial adhesion on feed.

  • In this study, the treatment of $H_2O_2$, papain and acylation on the protein isolate obtained from defatted sesame oil cake for the changes in amino acids composition, color, digestibility and some functional characteristics of this protein were investigated. The results showed that $H_2O_2$, papain and papain $H_2O_2$ treatment increased the rates of the protein extraction and content of protein in protein isolates when those values were compared to the alkali treatment. Also amino acid composition of the protein isolates were comparatively good, and color, and functional properties and pepsin digestibility were markedly improved. The amount of lysine, the first limiting amino acid of this protein was increased. The solubility, bulk density, water absorption, fat absorption and emulsifying properties were remarkably improved while foaming properties and digestibility was slighly decreased.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the nutritional value of germinated barley with animal experiment. Fourthyeight weanling albino rats, which were divided into 8 groups, were fed during 4 weeks. The feed intake, energy intake, FER (feed efficiency ratio) and growth rate were slightly high in the casein supplemented groups and were significantly high in the rice and casein supplemented groups. But there was no a significant difference between the barley and germinated barley groups. A higher PER (protein efficiency ratio) was shown in the rice and casein supplemented groups. It was induced that mixed cereal protein increase the PER compared to simple cereal protein. Low apparent digestibility of the diet and of the protein were found in barley and germinated barley groups compared to standard and rice groups. But apparent digestibility of protein in germinated barley groups were markedly increased by the supplementation of 5% casein or supplementation of rice and casein. From this result it was concluded that germinated barley has a nutritional effect on increasing protein digestibility when added enough amount of animal protein.

  • Objective: The purpose of present study was to investigate the effects of condensed molasses fermentation solubles (CMS) on lactation performance, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and serum parameters of dairy cows. Methods: A total of 75 healthy Holstein cows with the same parity (milk production = 35±2.5 kg, body weight = 570±28 kg) were randomly selected and divided into 5 groups. One group served as control group (CON; no CMS), whereas the other 4 groups were CMS1 (accounted for 1% of the diet), CMS2 (2%), CMS3 (3%), and CMS4 (4%). All cows were fed regularly three times each day at 0800, 1600, and 2400 h. Cows received diet and water ad libitum. The experiment lasted for 60 days. Results: Results showed that the dry matter intake, milk yield, and protein of CMS2 were maximum and higher (p<0.05) than CMS4. The ruminal pH was observed less than 6 in CMS3 and CMS4 groups. No noticeable difference of microbial protein was found between CON and CMS2 groups, while the microbial protein in these groups was higher (p<0.05) than CMS3 and CMS4 groups. The apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and crude protein in CMS2 group was higher (p<0.05) than CMS3 and CMS4 groups. Compared to CMS3 and CMS4 groups, the CMS2 group increased (p<0.05) the serum concentrations of immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M on d 60. Conclusion: Therefore, it is practicable that CMS substitutes for a part of concentrates in lactating cows' diets, but higher addition of CMS (more than 3% of the diet) could decrease production performance of dairy cows as seen in the present study.

  • Finger millet straw and rice straw are the major source of dry roughage in southern India. They distinctly vary in their morphological and nutritional characters. Hence an effort was made to study the nutrient utilization, milk yield and composition in crossbred dairy cows fed either finger millet (group 1) or rice straw (group 2) as a source of dry roughage. The cows in both the groups were fed as per requirement with concentrate, green fodder and straw in the ratio of 30:45:25 parts (DM). At the end of 50 days of preliminary feeding a digestibility trial was conducted for 7 days and pooled samples of feed, fodder, feces, urine and milk were analysed for macro and micro nutrient content. Finger millet straw contained more CP, Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Zn and Co than rice straw and rice straw contained higher ADF, ash and silica. The intake of DM, CP, EE, NDF, ADF and most micronutrients (Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn and Co) was significantly higher in cows fed finger millet straw. The digestibility of DM, CP, NDF and ADF was significantly higher in cows fed finger millet straw and the gut absorption of Ca, Cu, Mn and Co was significantly higher in cows fed finger millet straw. The dietary requirement of all micronutrients in both the group of cows could be met irrespective of the type of roughage fed except that of Ca, which was low (0.61 and 0.40%) in rice straw fed cows. The average daily milk yield (L/cow) was also higher (7.0 L) in cows fed finger millet straw as compared to cows fed rice straw (6.3 L). The average milk composition also did not differ except that of milk fat which was significantly (4.7 and 4.5%) low in cows fed rice straw. The overall results of this study have indicated that finger millet straw is a better source of dry fodder than rice straw and while feeding rice straw as the sole roughage to dairy cows there is need to supplement additional calcium as this could be one of the limiting nutrients for milk production.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the effect of xylanase on net energy for production, performance, nutrient digestion and gut microflora of broilers fed corn/soy-based diet. Eighty-four day-old male broiler chicks were allocated to two groups receiving two treatments, respectively. Each treatment had six replicate cages with seven broilers per cage. The diets were based on corn and soybean. The treatments were: i) basal diet reduced in apparent metabolizable energy (-0.63 MJ/kg compared to commercial diet specifications); ii) basal diet supplemented xylanase at 4,000 u/kg feed. The experiment used the auto-control, open circuit respiration calorimetry apparatus to examine the heat production and net energy for production. The results revealed that xylanase supplementation did not affect growth performance and diet AME value, but increased $NE_p$ value by 18.2% (p<0.05) and decreased daily heat production per $kg^{0.75}$ by 31.7% (p<0.05). There was no effect (p>0.05) of xylanase supplementation on the ileal digestibility of N and hemicelluloses, but the ileum digestibility of energy was increased by 2% by xylanase supplementation (p<0.05). Xylanase supplementation increased (p<0.05) the count of lactobacillus and bifidobacterial in the caecum.

  • 1) The general composition, vitamin, amino acid, digestibility and nutrition efficiency of the seeds of Pinus Koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc. were examined. (2) Pine tree seed contains approximately 17% or more protein nearly pure one. The amino acid composition of the protein was analyzed. When compared with the values of soybean and peanut reported in the literature, it contains slightly mare histidine and glycine etc., showing that the seeds are of high nutritional value. (3) The protein digestibility was 87% and the total content of digestible protein was approximately 14.9%, T.D.N. was 159.4%, proving itself excellent. (4) As to vitamins, it was found out that the seeds contain 275 r of $B_1$ and 99 r. As to minerals, Ca (301.2 mg) P (361 mg) and K (272 mg) were found to be contained in the seeds (5) The basic diet was considered nearly perfect from the view-point of nutrition, and to this were added 30%, 5% and 10% of the test sample respectively and were fed to albino rats. Among the three treatment, the 3% sample adding proved to be the mast effective one, showing the most efficient growth. Thus it can be presumed that the pine tree seeds certainly contain U.G.F. (6) The anatomical examination of the intestines of albino rats showed that the feeding of pine tree seeds bad favorable effect on the development of heart, kidney and pancreas.

  • Starch plays an important role in textural quality of infant food which is mainly affected by retrogradation of starch during storage. The acetylated rice was prepared and its physicochemical properties were evaluated to improve the textural quality of infant food when added. When the rice powder was reacted with acetic acid with its increasing concentration from 0.1 M, 0.2 M to 0.3 M, the amount of acetyl group and degree of substitution were increased by 0.39%, 0.8% and 1.27%, and by 0.0014, 0.031 and 0.048, respectively. The initial gelatinization temperature of rice paste determined by amylograph was decreased from $79.5^{\circ}C$ of unmodified rice to $67.5^{\circ}C$ of acetylated rice whose DS is 0.048. The apparent and maxium viscosity of rice paste at $95^{\circ}C$ before and after modification were increased from 92 B.U. to 201 B.U. and from 100 B.U. to 236 B.U., respectively, The degree of retrogradation and rate of syneresis were decreased from 28.7 to 18.8 and from 0.47% to 0.25%, respectively with increased by DS from 0 to 0.048. The digestibility rate of rice powder decreased from 9.19 of natural rice powder to 7.54 of acetylated rice powder whose DS is 0.048. In United State, there is no serious problem in total digestibility because only 4% of modified rice powder is added in production of infant food.
