  • This study was conducted to develop the simple and convenient irrigation control model which can maintain the appropriate rates of irrigation and drainage of nutrient solution according to the environmental conditions and growth stages in soilless culture of cucumber. In order to obtain fundamental data for development of the model, investigation of the actual state of soilless culture practices was carried out. Most irrigation systems of soilless culture were controlled by the time clock. Evapotranspiration of cucumber in soilless culture was investigated and correlations with environmental conditions were analyzed, and its prediction model was developed. A irrigation control model based on the time clock control and there were considered seasons, weather conditions, and growth stages was developed. Applicability of the model was tested by simulation. Drainage rates of irrigation system controlled by conventional time clock, integrated solar radiation, and the developed model were 61%, 20%, and 32%, respectively in cucumber perlite culture.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to investigate optimal ionic concentration of nutrient solution for water culture of young welsh onion (Allium fistulosum). For the purpose of clarification of optimal nutrient concentration to maximize growth of young welsh onion, different nutrient concentrations of Yamazaki's solution for welsh onion seedling $(NO_3^--N\;9.0,\;NH_4^+-N\;3.0,\;PO_4^{3-}-P\;6.0,\;K^+7.0,\;Ca^{2+}\;2.0,\;Mg^{2+}\;2.0,\;and\;SO_4^{2-}-S\;4.4me{\cdot}L^{-1})$ which selected by prior experiment were treated as 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Increments of fresh weight, dry weight and top length were the highest in 1.2 and, in the next, were placed by the order of 1.8, 2.4, and $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ The regression coefficients for the maximal growth of fresh weight of cv. 'Geurnjanguedaepa' and 'Tokyokuro' were $y=-42.091x^2+171.79x+11.047 (R^2=0.8946,\; R=0.9458^*)\;and\;y=-50.069x2+157.58x+15.414(R^2=0.9343,\;R=0.9692^{**})$, respectively, and optimal EC levels according to regression coefficients were 1.68 and $1.57dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. As the conclusions, optimal nutrient levels far young welsh onion were $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ EC in the early growth stage and $1.6\~l .7dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the later growth stage.

  • The effect of pH on the survival of R. solanacearum and its transmission via roots of tomato in hydroponic culture were studied in laboratory and greenhouse. In laboratory experiment, R. solanacearum could not survive for 24h in nutrient solution with pH of $4{\cdot}0;or\;4{\cdot}5$, while 1, 14, 51 and $62\%$ of inoculum survived at pH $5{\cdot}0,\;5{\cdot}6\;and\;6{\cdot}5$, respectively. When tomato plants were inoculated with R. solanacearum through wounds on the stems, the bacteria moved downward from the inoculation site to the roots and infectious bacteria were released from the roots into the nutrient solution. Of two pH regimes tested in greenhouse nutrient-film technique(NFT) culture, the R. solanacearum population was significantly lower in pH 5.0 than in pH 6.5 in most sampling data. In treatments in which R. solanacearum was introduced by transplanting two root-inoculated plants, significantly move plants developed wilt at pH $6{\cdot}5$(34 out of 48 plants) than at pH 5.0(11 out of 48 plants). In addition, when the bacterium was introduced by transplanting two stem-inoculated plants at pH $6{\cdot}5$, seven out of 24 plants developed wilt.

  • Agastache rugosa, is a perennial medicinal plant commonly used in Chinese herbalism, and may have anti-atherogenic and antibacterial properties. Here in this study, we investigated the growth and variations in antioxidant contents of A. rugosa in response to nutrient solution and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) with artificial lighting for a hydroponics culture. Fluorescent light at 150, and $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD with a 16/8 (light/dark) photoperiod, combined with four different nutrient solutions [developed by Horticulture experiment station in Japan (HES), University of Seoul (UOS), Europe vegetable research center (EVR), Otsuka-house 1A (OTS)], were used in a hydroponics culture system for 6 weeks. The shoot and root dry weights of A. rugosa grown with the OTS were significantly higher than those of other nutrient solutions. The amount of tilianin was the highest grown with the OTS, followed by EVR, HES, and UOS. Total acacetin content was the highest in A. rugosa grown under EVR which was statistically similar with OTS. The A. rugosa grown under $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD produced higher fresh weight and both acacetin and tilianin contents than that grown under $150{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD. The present results suggested that OTS along with $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD could be an optimum growing condition for better growth and higher accumulation of tilianin and acacetin contents in A. rugosa with hydroponic culture systems in a plant factory.

  • This experiment was conducted to develop optimal nutrient solution for tomato plants, according to the plant growth stages in closed system. Perlite substrate was supplied with 1/2 and 1 strength of the solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan. Plants grew better and the nutrient_contents in the leaves were also proper in 1 strength. Based on these results, optimal nutrient solution in perlite was composed by n/w of 1 strength according to the plant growth rates : N 13.5, P 3.3, K 7.0, Ca 7.0, Mg 3.5 me.L$^{-1}$ in seedling stage, N 14.2, P 3.3, K 8.0, Ca 7.5, Mg 4.0 me.L$^{-1}$ in vegetative stage and N 10.0, P 3.0, K 7.0, Ca 6.0, Mg 3.0 me.L$^{-1}$ in reproductive stage. To examine the suitability of the nutrient solution developed in this experiment, tomato plants were grown in rockwool and supplied with two different composition and concentration of nutrient solution composed by n/w of 1 strength in perlite (SCUT) and by Research Station for Greenhouse Vegetable and Floriculture on the Netherlands (PBG). PH and EC in SCUT were changed little in 1 strength but a significant change of PH was shown in 1/2 strength. Later, drained solutions in rockwool were also analyzed according to the Plant growth stages. Low concentrations of N and P in root zone were shown in early growth stage but N was increased in reproductive stage, while, K, Ca, Mg concentration was consistent through the whole growth stage. Considering these results, we found that the rebalance of N and P was needed, that is, reduction of N concentration in reproductive stage and increasing of P concentration in vegetative stage.

  • This experiment was conducted to decide appropriate nutrient concentration for beet soilless culture by different nutrient concentration treatment between before and after root enlargement. Yamazaki's solution for head lettuce was used 0.5, 1, 2, 4 strength for before root enlargement and 0.5, 1, 2, 4 strength was treated after root enlargement. Root weight was good in 0.5, 1, 2 strength treatment before, then change treatment to 4 strength after root enlargement. But 4 strength treatment after root enlargement increase pithiness and root cracking. Vitamin C contents was low in 0.5 and 4 strength treatments after root enlargement. Betaxanthin and betacyanin were involved high concentration in lower nutrient concentration after root enlargement despite the treatments of before root enlargement. Therefore 1, 2 strength before root enlargement and 2 strength after root enlargement treatments is recommendable for nutrient culture of beet.

  • Two desert plant species were grown in solution culture with varying levels of boron. Both appeared to be very resistant to accumulation of large amounts of boron but F. dumosa accumulated moderately high amounts of it at levels of 10 or more ppm in the nutrient solution. Growth reduction was indicated for this species at 50 and 100 ppm boron in the nutrient solution. The high levels of boron resulted in decreased potassium levels in roots for this species. Growth seemed to increase for A. hymenelytra up to level of 20 ppm boron in the nutrient solution but boron content in leaves at this level was only 156ppm of dry weight. Higher levels did not further increase boron contents of leaves. The distribution of both of these species in the desert is probably related to their ability to accumulate small amounts of boron in the presence of large amounts of boron in the soil.

  • This study was to verity that the uptake inhibition and accumulation of nitrogen in different potassium levels. Lettuce was used as model plant in this study and grown in pot of 10cm's in diameter and depth with mixture media of vermiculite and perlite under supply of different culture solution for three weeks. Nitrogen absorption at root was inhibited by increased potassium concentration in nutrient solution, and nitrate accumulation of plant was depended on absorption of nitrogen because nitrate content of 0 K level was 4-5 times higher than that of 2 K level, Concentration of ascorbic acid was decreased by increasing the nitrogen absorption, since ascorbic acid (AsA) content of 2K level was higher than those of OK level in both of old leaf and flesh leaf.

  • It is proposed the polyacrylamide gel, instead of agar, could be used for the solid cultures of microorganisms including Streptomyces strains. Polymerization and gellation of 5% acrylamide solution were done by autoclaving for 5 min at 121.deg.C and no hindered by the addition of nutrient-rich media. In particular, pH buffer solution suitable for corresponding microorganisms must be used in the preparation of culture media. Comparing with agar, it was discussed that polycrylamide gel had many advantages such as gellation within the wide range of strong acid Carbon and Nitrogen sources, requirement tests of growth factors and minerals, sterization at high temperature, diffusion assays of products depending on the pore size of gel, and stability and standarization of microbial cultures.
