Knowledge and Attitude about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for Nursing Students (간호학생의 심폐소생술에 대한 지식 및 태도)

  • Purpose : This study was to examine the knowledge and attitude about cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) for nursing students, and to basic data with CPR education program for nursing student. Method : 128 nursing students filled out a self-administered questionnaires. The data were collected by CPR knowledge and attitude modified by the authors based on Kim's inventory (2008). Result : Nursing students weren't knowledgeable nor confident of CPR. But they had positive attitude about as a first responder. Conclusion : Intensive education by the level of knowledge should be provided for nursing students to master the knowhow of CPR, especially cardiac compression, and evaluation should be reinforced as well. And an education should be offered to enhance their confidence CPR performing CPR.

Effects of Elderly Care Voluntary Program on Nursing College Students (간호대학생의 노인간호봉사 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an elderly care volunteer program for nursing students and to evaluate its effects. Method: An elderly care volunteer program was developed and then used with 77 nursing students for 6 months. Before and after the program, students responded with a questionnaire on knowledge, attitude and behavior toward the elderly. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, t-test, and Repeated measure ANOVA. Result: The elderly care volunteer program significantly improved knowledge toward elderly between the experimental and control groups but not in attitude and behavior toward elderly. Conclusion: This study shows that the elderly care volunteer program was an effective service-learning program to improve knowledge toward elderly for nursing students.

The Effect of AIDS Education on Baccalaureate Nursing Students (간호대학생의 에이즈 교육효과)

  • Purpose: to evaluate the effects of AIDS education for baccalaureate nursing students. Method: a one-time AIDS education was delivered to 175 nursing students and knowledge and attitude toward HIV/AIDS were measured before and after the AIDS education using a questionnaire. Result: 1) Before the AIDS education, the average knowledge score of the students was 64.30 points out of 103 points while the average attitude score was 25.77 points out of 36 points. 2) Before the AIDS education, school grade, former experience of AIDS education and religion were founded to be the significantly related to the student's knowledge on AIDS. 3) There was a significant increase in AIDS related knowledge (t=-24.21, p=.000). There was also a significant improvement in attitude toward HIV/AIDS (t=4.67, p=.000) after the AIDS education. 4) There was a significant correlation between the knowledge and the attitude toward HIV/AIDS before the AIDS education, while no correlations was found between the AIDS knowledge and attitude after the education. Conclusion: AIDS education is necessary and effective for baccalaureate nursing students. It is necessary to develop comprehensive AIDS education program to improve the level of knowledge and preventive behavior for HIV/AIDS as well as to allay the fears for AIDS.

Knowledge, Experience and Self-efficacy regarding Children's Pain Management among Nursing Students (아동 통증관리에 대한 간호대학생의 지식, 경험 및 자기효능감)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate nursing students' knowledge, experience and self-efficacy regarding children's pain management. Methods: A descriptive research design was used. The participants in this study were 167 senior nursing students who understood purpose of this study and accepted to participate in. The Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude Survey regarding Pain (PNKAS) was used to measure knowledge toward children's pain management. Data were collected from December 15 to December 30, 2012. Results: The overall percentage of correct answer was 56%. The pain assessment scale and non-pharmacological pain intervention which senior nursing students used in most were face pain rating scale (94.6%, n=158/167) and emotional support (93.4%, n=156/167). Significant differences were found in self-efficacy scores between above-average group of knowledge score. Conclusion: This study showed that undergraduate nursing students had a lack of knowledge for children's pain management. There is a need for more detailed educational program in the area of children's pain management.

Effects of Action Oriented Breast Self-examination(BSE) Education on Knowledge, Self-efficacy, and Performance Competence in Nursing Students (행위중심적 유방자가검진 교육이 간호학생의 지식, 자기효능감 및 수행능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to test effects of action oriented BSE education on knowledge, selfefficacy, and performance competence in nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent pre-posttest of time serial quasi-experimental design was used to prevent diffusion of the experiment. Out of 53 nursing students selected by convenient sampling in the third grade at a nursing college, 27 students were randomly assigned to the control group and were first given a traditional lecture on BSE. For the experimental group of 26 students action oriented BSE education consisted of lectures, demonstrations with breast models, and BSE skill practice by micro teaching. Results: There was no significant difference in general and BSE-related characteristics between the two groups. Scores of the experimental group in knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance after the intervention were significantly higher than those of the control group. Conclusions: Results showed that action- oriented BSE education was effective in increasing knowledge, self-efficacy and performance competence in nursing students. Education for students should incorporate strategies reinforcing confidence by practicing actual BSE skills as well as acquiring knowledge of BSE, so that students can become competent and practical cancer prevention educators.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Confidence on Patient Safety of Undergraduate Nursing Students (간호대학생의 환자안전에 대한 지식, 태도 및 수행자신감)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine undergraduate students' level of knowledge, attitude, and confidence toward patient safety. Methods: A descriptive survey design was used. The subjects consisted of 932 senior nursing students who have had clinical practice in nursing schools in a metropolitan city in Korea. The data were collected from March 4th to 28th in 2011. Knowledge, attitude, and confidence on patient safety were measured using self administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed with SPSS 18.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Knowledge of patient safety was relatively low and attitude and confidence were at moderate level. There were statistically significant differences in knowledge, attitude, and confidence toward patient safety according to gender, educational system, grades, satisfaction with nursing major or clinical practice, and experience of patient safety education or patient safety campaign. There was a significant positive correlation among knowledge, attitude and confidence on patient safety. Conclusion: The study findings suggests that concept and skills on patient safety need to be educated systematically during undergraduate curriculum linked with clinical practicum.

Sexual Knowledge of the Male High School Students in a Rural Area of Gangwon Province (강원도 일개 군 지역 남자 고등학생의 성지식)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of sexual knowledge of male high school students. Method: The Participants were 503 male students from a high school in one county of Gangwon Province. The data were collected from May 1 to May 30, 2004. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS program to investigate the responses to the structured questionnaires used in the study. Results: The level of sexual knowledge of high school students was 10.25(range 0 to 17). In terms of response distribution of sexual knowledge by items, the correct response rate was highest for 'wet dream is discharge of semen during sleep', and the wrong response rate was lowest in 'gonorrhea occurred most frequency in 15-25 year old adolescents'. General characteristics showed significant differences in sexual knowledge depending on grade(grade 3 :10.45, grade 2: 10.40, grade1: 9.88). Depend on the sexual impulse and the solutions to sex problems, there were significant differences in sexual knowledge with respect to sexual characteristics. Conclusion: As a whole the sexual knowledge of the male high school students was low, sexual education programs for high school students should focus on sexually transmitted diseases and contraception.

Factors influencing Evidence-Based Practice Attitudes among Undergraduate Nursing Students (간호대학생에서 근거기반실무 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study is aimed at identifying factors influencing attitudes of Evidence-Based Practice among nursing students. Methods: 202 nursing students were recruited from B city and G district. The questionnaires included critical thinking dispositions, information retrieval skills, knowledge and attitudes of Evidence-Based Practice, and characteristics. Data were analyzed by SPSS/Win 21.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regressions. Results: The average score of undergraduate nursing students for Evidence-Based Practice attitudes was $32.92{\pm}4.57$. Evidence-Based Practice attitudes had positive correlation with critical thinking disposition (r=.53, p<.001), information retrieval skills (r=.45, p<.001) and Evidence-Based Practice knowledge (r=.42, p<.001). Factors influencing Evidence-Based Practice attitudes were critical thinking dispositions (${\beta}=.45$) and Evidence-Based Practice knowledge (${\beta}=.30$). Total variance was explained about 35.3% (F=55.80, p<.001). Conclusion: These results show that teaching strategies that enhance critical thinking dispositions are recommended to improve Evidence-Based Practice attitudes among nursing students. Also, nursing education should include a regular Evidence-Based Practice curriculum to improve Evidence-Based Practice knowledge as is necessary for students to improve information retrieval skill. Reading nursing articles can help nursing students comprehend the up-to-data evidence of clinical practice.

Attitude and knowledge on PTSD of nursing and paramedic students in Korea (간호학과생과 응급구조학과생의 PTSD에 대한 태도와 지식)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify attitude and knowledge level on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among nursing and paramedic students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted from December 1st to 20th in 2019. A total of 210 students participated from two universities in Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests and one-way analysis of variance. Results: Students were positive about the government's spending on PTSD treatment (91.4%), and professional training (92.4%). PTSD patients were considered to be more dangerous (68.1%) and violent (42.4%) than the general population. There were no significant differences in attitude and general knowledge on PTSD between nursing and paramedic students. However, general knowledge on PTSD differed according to education experience on PTSD (t=2.04, p=.043). Knowledge scores for PTSD treatment differed significantly according to the academic major (t=2.02, p=.044), and education experience on PTSD (t=2.87, p=.005). Conclusions: The results of this study indicate nursing and paramedic students lack knowledge on PTSD. Therefore, developing curriculum regarding PTSD-related contents in undergraduate and continuing education in both departments is needed to provide better quality health care to people with PTSD.

Development and Implementation of Problem-based Learning Packages on the Respiratory and Cardiac System (호흡 및 심장계 영역의 문제중심학습패키지 개발과 적용)

  • Purpose: This study aimed at developing the problem-based learning packages on the respiratory and cardiac system of an adult-health nursing course, and to examine the effect of PBL on the knowledge, learning attitude and motivation in nursing students. Method: A total of 7 PBL packages were developed through the analysis of learning contents and integration of concepts. Clinical scenarios used in 7 PBL packages were selected and composed at a respiratory and a cardiovascular unit, a medical ICU and a chest-surgery unit of C university hospital in G-city. The PBL method was implemented 3 hours a week for 12 weeks to 35 students of an experimental group, and the conventional lecture was implemented to 38 students at C college of C province from Sept. to Dec. 2002. A pretest-posttest experimental design was used. Result: The PBL students (n=35) scored significantly higher knowledge than conventional students (n=38) in the area of problem solving (t=3.418, p=. 001). But, there is no significant difference in the memory-dependent knowledge. Also, The level of learning attitude (t=3.570, p=. 001) and learning motivation (t=3.446. p=. 001) was significantly higher in PBL students. Conclusion: PBL method appears to be effective in improving nursing students' problem-solving knowledge and positive learning attitude and motivation.
