  • Both undergraduate and graduate programs in health services management(HSM) are recently established in colleges and universities in Korea, and the programs train their students for diverse sectors within the field of healthcare management, including hospitals, nursing facilities, consulting firms, health industries such as pharmaceutical, insurance companies, etc. This study investigates many of the managerial roles expected to graduates from academic curricula in HSM, and required competencies to be successful in their positions. The information of roles and competencies for HSM graduates were collected, and their importances were evaluated by healthcare management experts through a Delphi method. As the result, 11 items for present roles and 13 items for future roles were derived, and 15 and 16 items were derived for present and future competencies respectively. Utilizing the classification of work roles by Timmreck and that of managerial competencies by Robbins, the importance of roles and competencies of healthcare managers was analyzed and interpreted. The major domains of roles at present turned out to be 'organizer', 'planner', 'problem solver', and 'coordinator' in order according to importance. On the other hand, as graduates develop their careers, the domains of future roles would be changed to 'director' and 'planner'. For competencies, the most important domain at present was 'technical skill', but the future important domain was 'interpersonal and emotional intelligence'. The result of this study can be seen as an initial step toward improving the academic curricula of HSM in college and universities and promoting collaborative efforts between academic programs and on-site practices in healthcare industries.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with stage of change for drinking cessation among adolescents on the basis of the Transtheoretical Model. Methods: The data was collected from 343 high school students in Kimhae-city, who have experienced any kind of alcohol in their lifetime. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and Logistic regression were performed using the SPSS WIN 18. 0 program. Results: The stage of change was as follows: 24.2% in the precontemplation stage, 8.7% in the contemplation stage, 10.8% in the preparation stage, 39.7% in the action stage and 16.6% in maintenance stage. The predictive factors to move from the precontemplation stage to the contemplation/preparation stage were dramatic relief (OR=1.36, 95% CI:1.13-1.63) and self-efficacy (OR=1.05, 95% CI:1.01-1.09). The predictive factors to move from the contemplation/preparation stage to the action/maintenance stage were female (OR=0.50, 95% CI:0.27-0.94), the number of friend who have drunk (OR=0.84, 95% CI:0.77-0.91) and self-efficacy (OR=1.04, 95% CI: 1.00-1.07). Conclusions: To stop adolescent drinking, this study suggests the intervention program needs to be considered the individual's stage of change of drinking. The intervention program to enhance dramatic relief and self-efficacy is needed to adolescents in the precontemplation stage. It is crucial to develop strategies to raise self-efficacy for adolescents in the contemplation/preparation stage, which also respect their gender and peer groups.

  • Objective: The aim of the present study was to develop a valid and reliable scale that measures the healthy life styles among young adults. Design: A methodological study design was employed to develop and validate the Healthy Lifestyle Screening Tool (HLST). Methods: The validity and reliability of the HLST were established in accordance with DeVellis' 8 steps guideline for tool development. The question items were generated based on literature reviews and interviews, which were then classified into 12 categories. The HLST was administered to 272 students attending a Korean university. The reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha. The validity of the scale was examined with the mean inter-item correlations (MIIC) and factor analysis, and was also examined for content validity by experts. Results: The reliability of the HLST was found to be acceptable, as indicated by a Cronbach's alpha of 0.71. In the validity test, items with less than 80% "agreement" ratings on the content validity index by experts were revised. The MIIC values were greater than 0.25. A factor analysis of 36 items extracted 9 factors (i.e., four items per factor), which together explained 50.4% of the variance. The HLST consists of 36 items that measure 9 factors based on a 4-point Likert rating scale, with 4 items per factor, as follows: sunlight, water, air, rest, exercise, nutrition, temperance, trust, and general physical condition. High scores on the HLST are indicative of a healthy lifestyle (HL). Conclusions: The HLST is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to measure HL among young adults. Identification of HL by using the HLST can provide guidance to integrated therapeutic approaches along with conventional physical therapy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting tuberculosis prevention behaviors in North Korean adolescent refugees. Methods: From September 16 to October 8, 2019, a survey was conducted to collect data from 143 North Korean adolescent refugees aged 13 to <25 at alternative and general schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The scale developed by Park (2008) and adapted by Cha (2012) was used to rate tuberculosis prevention behaviors in daily life with the aim of preventing high school students from getting infected with tuberculosis. The collected data were processed through frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression, using SPSS 25.0. Results: The mean score was 13.65 for knowledge of tuberculosis, 44.23 for attitudes towards tuberculosis, and 41.33 for tuberculosis prevention behaviors. Significant differences were found according to gender, country of origin, duration of stay in South Korea, tuberculosis examination, pre-entry chest x-ray, education about tuberculosis, alcohol intake, and subjective health status. A positive correlation was found between knowledge, attitudes, and prevention behaviors. The factors affecting tuberculosis prevention behaviors were attitudes (β=.38, p<001) and subjective health status (β=.26, p<.001). Conclusion: It is necessary to provide attitude-based education that can reinforce positive attitudes in order to improve North Korean adolescent refugees' tuberculosis prevention behaviors. This is expected to help them pay more attention to health care and become better at prevention behaviors. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a tuberculosis prevention education program with the aim of making them more knowledgeable about tuberculosis and providing them with systematic and sustainable education.
