Use of Simulation in Nursing Education (시뮬레이션 교육의 간호학 적용)

  • Purpose: Since the 1990s, there has been an increasing interest in patient safety and quality of care. As a result, undergraduate nursing students have difficulties in clinical nursing practice such as health assessment or providing nursing skills. The purpose of this paper was to review current issues related to use of simulations in nursing education. Method: We conducted a thorough literature review including related proceedings to identify present issues in use of simulation education in nursing. Result/Conclusion: Simulation education in nursing differs from that in medical science. In nursing education, we need to focus on developing competencies for nursing students, for example, nursing process, nursing skills, and therapeutic communication skills With an increasing number of human patient simulators, we suggest a more careful approach including faculty development, curriculum development, and cost effective strategic planning. We propose a reliable and valid scenario development among nursing faculty as a consortium in the future.

Concept Analysis of Caring (돌봄의 개념분석)

  • Caring is being rediscovered as a central and unifying concept of the nursing. Traditionally, nursing profession has emphasized spirit and activities of caring. But there is little efforts to study the caring phenomena scientifically and systematically in nursing, and then the concept of caring is still remained unclear and ambiguous. Changes of social, and health care environment are threatening the philosophy and practice of caring, so it is urgent to identify caring more scientifically and to rediscover the nature of nursing discipline. Knowledge of the caring is essential component for the development of nursing as a science and a profession. The first thing to study a concept is thought to be the analysis of the concept. So in this study, concept analysis of caring was performed to clarify the concept of caring as a basis for the study of caring afterward. The approach used for the concept analysis of caring was the approach presented by Walker and Avant. The defining(or critical) attributes of caring identified in this study were (1) a series of activities for helping others, (2) concern and devotion. (3) interpersonal relationship, and (4) scientific and systematic process. The identified antecedents of caring were (1) awareness of other's needs for help, and (2) moral and cognitive motivation for helping others. The identified consequences of caring were (1) healing, (2) satisfaction, and (3) growth. And the consequences of caring were revealed to both of the care giver and the care receiver. The empirical referents of caring could be the behaviors of interpersonal relationship through scientific and systematic process with concern and devotion for others.

Convergent Approach of about Nursing Students' Experience of Mind Settling and Introspection Meditation (간호대학생의 마음 가다듬음과 살핌 명상에 대한 융합적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences via convergent approach of qualitative research method after conducting Mind Settling and Introspection Meditation(MCIM) in nursing students. Data were collected from 10 nursing students at a Nursing University and analyzed using the method of content analysis. Four theme clusters were found from the study; 'A change in attitude after reflection on life and repentance,' 'Becoming mentally healthy,' 'Becoming a master of subjective life,' 'Recognizing the value of all being and realizing the self-value.' In this study, it was discussed that MCIM could be utilized as an intervention program to recover the moral character of nursing students. It is necessary to expand and study various subjects by revising and supplementing MCIM.

Leadership Experience of Clinical Nurses: Applying Focus Group Interviews (임상간호사의 리더십 경험: 포커스 그룹 인터뷰 적용)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the leadership experience of clinical nurses. Methods: During 2014, data were collected using focus group interviews. Three focus group interviews were held with a total of 20 clinical nurses participating. All interviews were recorded as they were spoken and transcribed and data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Fifteen categories emerged from the five main themes. 1) Thoughts on the leadership category: to lead others, to cope with problem situations adequately and to serve as a shield against difficulties. 2) Situations requiring leadership: situation that requires correct judgement, coping and situations that need coordination and cooperation. 3-1) Leadership behaviors: other-oriented approach and self-oriented approach. 3-2) Leadership behavior consequences: relevant compensation and unfair termination. 4-1) Facilitators of leadership: confidence and passion for nursing and external support and resources. 4-2) Barriers to leadership: non-supportive organization culture and deficiency in own leadership competencies. 5) Strategies of leadership development: strengthen leadership through self-development and organizational leadership development. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results indicate that it is necessary to enhance clinical nurses' leadership role in healthcare. Enhancement can be achieved through leadership programs focused on enlarging leadership experience, constant self-development, leadership training, and development of leadership competencies suited to the nursing environment.

Effects of Simulation and Problem-Based Learning Courses on Student Critical Thinking, Problem Solving Abilities and Learning (간호학생의 비판적 사고성향, 문제해결능력과 학습에 대한 PBL과 S-PBL의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to discover long-term effects of Problem-based learning (PBL) and Simulation Problem-based learning (S-PBL) on critical thinking, problem solving abilities, learning attitude, motivation, and learning satisfaction among nursing students at Cheju Halla College. These students were taking problem based learning and simulation as a problem based learning method with an integrated curriculum. Methods: This study used a pretest-posttest with repeated measure design. Data was collected using convenience sampling from the beginning of the 1st semester to the end of the 2nd year when the PBL and S-PBL were completed by those who were enrolled in the integrated nursing curriculum. One-hundred eighty-three surveys were collected and analyzed during the repeat data collection. Results: There we restatistically significant differences of critical thinking, problem solving abilities, learning attitude, motivation and satisfaction post PBL and S-PBL. Conclusion: This study contributes to our understanding of outcomes from the PBL and S-PBL approach. The students undertaking PBL and S-PBL demonstrated that they developed a more positive attitude about their educational experience. In addition, students' tendency to think critically and problem solve improved through the use of the PBL and S-PBL approach.

Gerontological Nursing in the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4차 산업혁명시대 노인 간호)

  • Purpose: There is a need to examine changes in the health care environment and the impact on gerontological nursing care in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this article recent healthcare paradigm changes, gerontechnology, high tech and high touch, person-centered approaches are discussed. Methods: A narrative review was used. Results: Cyber physical system, artificial intelligence, advance and convergence of bioengineering, and information communication technology are changing the health care paradigm to "precision", "prediction" and "personalization". Entry into the global aging society and the surge in the elderly population worldwide has led to searches for a new means to prepare for projected demands of this growing population. Thus, efforts such as gerontechnology have been made to apply and utilize recent innovative science and technology in order to promote the health and life of elders. There is a great emphasis on the convergence of high tech and high touch, in which humanistic and artistic approach are critical in order to assure that technology is beneficial to human beings rather than harmful. Conclusion: Positive healthcare experiences among patients and their families are emphasized by utilizing new technology and employing high touch while providing personalized care with a person-centered approach.

The Research for the Nursing Theory Development (간호이론 개발을 위한 일 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was to understand to the nursing theory frame contained in the traditional philosophy and western nursing theory for the theory development fit for Korean people and to identified the strategy for nursing theory development. Method: To perform this study various relevant texts-western, eastern, classical and contemporary were reviewed. Result: The metaparadigm of the nursing in western considers four major factors-Human being, Environment, Health and Nursing. In Korea, the metaparadigm of nursing considers three major factors-Universe, Human being (body, life, health, disease) and Nursing. The key strategy for establishing comprehensive nursing theory which combines both western and eastern is to study the nursing literature based on eastern and western philosophy. Theorists should study the life and culture of the specific nation in order to understand the essence of the thoughts and psychology of the patients and to investigate the phenomena, which will be the foundation of theory development. Conclusion: Western nursing theory must be utilized to provide practical framework for the development of nursing theory, and practical approach is necessary for combining western and eastern theory.

A Development of Nursing Outcome Indicators for Stroke Patients (뇌졸중 환자의 간호성과지표 개발)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop nursing outcome indicators based on nursing activities done for stroke patients. Method: focus group meeting and delphi technique, which consisted of clinical nurse experts, neurologist, and nursing professors. CVI(Index of Content Validity) and user validity test was performed. Result: 12 nursing diagnoses, 29 nursing interventions and nursing outcomes were identified. The former were from NIC and the latter were developed according to nursing interventions. They were verified by experts in focus group. 199 nursing activities were identified, 133 nursing outcome indicators were developed. In user validity, usefulness and usability were tested. Conclusion: This systemic approach of measuring nursing outcomes verified nurses' positive effects in changing patients health status and nursing contributions in the health care system as a profession.

Perceptions of Spiritual Nursing Care Nurses and Nursing Students (간호사 및 간호학생의 영적간호 인지조사 연구)

  • This study was designed to clarify how nurses and nursing students perceive their clients' needs for spiritual nursing care, it's practices, and problems. The purpose was to suggest directions for the development of spiritual nursing practice. The major findings are as follows : Respondents primarily perceived spiritual nursing as nursing care designd to help terminally ill patients accept death. Many of the respondents showed a high level of awareness of spiritual nursing care and its necessity. Few of them, however, bad actual experience in spiritual care. Those with experience in spiritual nursing care tend of take either a religious approach or perceived it as the therapeutic use of the self. The greatest problem related to the practice of spiritual care was found to be lack of time. Most of nurses and nursing students were found to be well aware of the needs for spiritual nursing care but were hindered from practising it because of the lack of time. To resolve the problem it was recommended that the scope of nursing practice be readjusted and that pre-and in-service programs should be developed to further heighten nursing students' interest in spiritual nursing care.
