Purpose: This study was a descriptive methodological study to develop protocols for school health practice to manage health problems of primary school students effectively. Methods: The protocols were verified by 12 experts and 10 health teachers, respectively, to secure a two-step content validity. Results: The main 8 health problems of primary school students were headache, abdominal pain, musculo-skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, ophthalmic, and oral-dental problems, and fever. The developed protocols consist of 8 algorithms, which are to help decision making in the course of assessing health problems and to identify and link related factors and associated symptoms, 8 school nursing records based on the Omaha classification system, and the list of 441 links between nursing assessment and nursing intervention. Conclusion: The use of the protocols is expected to make it easier for health teachers to apply the nursing process in solving the health problems of primary school students and supporting the rational decision making process, eventually improving the quality of primary school health. Repeated studies for protocol standardization as well as studies dealing with various health problems not included in the protocols should be performed for the development of school health practice protocols.
Spinal cord injury patients need rehabilitation after the acute stage. They should be cared for at home to decrease hospitalization. Home care nurses play an important role in making spinal cord injury patients who have physical. and psychosocial problems do their best. For effective care, home care nurses need standardized nursing intervention protocols for spinal cord injury patients, but they are rarely developed. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop home care nursing protocols, based on NIC, that are applicable to spinal cord injury patients at home. Forty home care nursing charts of spinal cord injury patients registered in a home care nursing agency from July 1st, 1994 to August 31st, 1999 in S city were analyzed. Fifteen home care nurses participated in this study as a user validity validation group, The results of this study are as follows. 1. Fifteen nursing diagnoses were classified through the frequency analysis of home care nursing charts and previous literature for 40 spinal cord injury patients: altered urinary elimination, constipation, high risk for impaired skin integrity, chronic pain, impaired skin integrity, impaired social interaction, knowledge deficit, bowel incontinence, high risk for injury, altered role performance, care giver role strain, impaired physical mobility, sexual dysfunction, dysreflexia, and ineffective breathing pattern. 2. Based on validation by experts and user validities, 93 nursing interventions which were above ICV(Index of Content Validity) .80 were chosen. 3. Nursing intervention protocols which showed above ICV .80 were developed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate nursing protocols for superficial cryotherapy in different medical institutions. Methods: The study was conducted with a cross-sectional descriptive design. The medical institutions including general hospitals, hospitals, and geriatric hospitals were randomly selected. A total of 435 nurses from 126 institutions completed a questionnaire. Data were collected from December 2014 to June 2015. Results: Forty-two institutions (39.5%) had nursing protocol for cryotherapy. The nurses reported that durations of cold application were 2 minutes to 5 hours. Frequently used cold therapy devices in order of frequency were frozen gel packs, ice packs, and frozen IV fluid bags. There were variances in the duration of cold application according to the types of institution ($x^2=7.78$, p=.020) and nursing units ($x^2=26.42$, p<.001). In addition, intervals of cold application were different according to the nursing units (x=12.23, p=.032). There were differences in cold application instruments by regional groups (x=70.38, p<.001). Most of the nurses (95.6%) responded that national nursing protocol for superficial cryotherapy were needed. Conclusion: There were difficulties in providing consistent nursing interventions because of the practical differences and absence of evidence-based guidelines for cryotherapy. The researchers recommend that basic studies with various instruments be conducted and proper nursing protocols be developed for cryotherapy.
Purpose: To evaluate the emergency medical protocols and need assessment through the case report Method: The study investigated the emergency call system through the 1339 emergency patients information center in 1997. Results: The emergency calls tend to follow general trends of the type of cases : abdominal pain (13.5%), unconsciousness(12.0%), traffic accidents (7.4%), bleeding (6.6%), respiration difficulty (5.9%). This was all collected through emergency medical protocols injury and poisoning (22.3%), symptom (51.6%), others (26.1%). Conclusion: The results suggest that a specific training program for emergency medical dispatchers should be established, and emergency medical dispatcher managers must review the cases on the basis of emergency medical protocols every year. Emergency medical services, furthermore, will continue to raise the standard for emergency medical dispatching.
Purpose: The propose of this study was to introduce the clamping protocols for a biliary external drainage tube and trace the results of using clamping protocols to prevent some possible biliary complications or enable their early detection in living-donor liver transplantation. Method: This study was a retrospective study to analyze the cases of 97 subjects who had undergone liver transplantation in a hospital in Seoul, Korea. Clamping protocol 1 was applied to 47 patients, and clamping protocol 2 was applied to 50 patients. Results: In the case of protocol 1, the success rate of the clamping protocol was 74.5%, while that of protocol 2 was 84.0%. However, there was no significant difference in the compiled statistics from authentic sources (p = .246). Conclusions: The difference in the success rate between the two protocols was not significant for the clamping protocols of the biliary external drainage tube. However protocol 2 is suggested for the clamping method due to the simplicity of application. Further study with a large sample size is suggested.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate the DVT-related knowledge and compliance of hospital nurses. Methods: A survey questionnaire was administrated to a convenience sample of 367 nurses working at 3 university hospitals and 4 general hospitals located in Busan. Results: The mean score of DVT-related knowledge was $16.86{\pm}$3.40$ points out of 26, with a percentage of correct answers of 64.8%. The mean score of DVT-related compliance was $21.40{\pm}6.42$ points out of 32. There was a significant correlation between hospital nurses' DVTrelated knowledge and compliance (r=.309, p=.000). The factors for predicting hospital nurses' DVT-related compliance included knowledge of treatment and care areas, the subcategories of DVT knowledge (${\beta}$=.214), knowledge of the area of risk factors (${\beta}$=.105), whether to perform DVT prevention and treatment based on protocols (${\beta}$=.193), the existence of DVT protocols (${\beta}$=.168) and the degree of interest in DVT (${\beta}$=.102) and the total explanatory power of these was 21.3%. Conclusion: To improve compliance on preventing DVT effectively, it is necessary to improve nurses' DVT-related knowledge and interest in DVT through appropriate education. And, it is necessary to develop standardized protocols and guidelines.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate whether there were differences among three oral care protocols on participants' oral health status (oral status, dry mouth, halitosis, saliva pH, microorganism growth in oral cavity) and tooth stain. The three protocols were: 1) oral solution of 4% normal saline, 2) 0.1% Chlorhexidine and 3) Tantum. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was utilized. A total of 55 elderly patients residing at long-term care facilities(19 in the 4% normal saline group, 17 in the 0.1% Chlorhexidine group, 19 in the Tantum group) received oral care daily for four weeks. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: The halitosis (${\chi}^2=10.71$, p=.005) and saliva pH (${\chi}^2=6.84$, p=.033) scores were significantly improved after the oral care with 4% normal saline. Conclusion: These findings indicate that if elderly patients in long-term care facilities have complaint of the discomfort of using Chlorhexidine or Tantum, 4% normal saline is as effective at the other two. This can also be cost effective as there were no differences among the protocols in oral status, dry mouth, tooth stain or microorganism growth in oral cavity.

Purpose: This study aimed to describe Korean nursing home nurses' perceptions on dysphagia management and their working experiences of older adults with dysphagia. Methods: Using a purposive sampling design, 23 eligible nurses were interviewed as four focus groups from 4 facilities out of nursing homes. The qualitative data from focus group interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis to classify common themes into larger categories. Results: Two main themes on the attributes of caring nursing home residents with dysphagia were 'Need for nursing resources' and 'Need for support'. In addition, four subthemes emerged as a result of analysis: 'need for nursing protocols for assessing and managing dysphagia', 'need for emergency care skills of nurses and nurse assistants', 'need for prompt and accurate management by cooperation of physicians and therapists', and 'need for partnership upon comprehension of visiting family members concerning dysphagia'. Conclusion: Nursing home nurses fully recognized the importance of dysphagia management; however, they experienced substantial barriers due to lack of adequate nursing protocols or partnership with family caregivers, insufficient training for emergency care, and deficient support from medical staff. Development of nursing guidelines tailored to the nursing home context and based on partnership among medical experts and family caregivers is needed.

Purpose : This study aimed to systematically review the effectiveness of nursing interventions for patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). As the use of ECMO increases in critical care settings, it is important to understand how nursing interventions affect patient outcomes, survival, and complication rates. Methods : This systematic review followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis guidelines. A literature search was performed using terms related to ECMO and nursing interventions in several international electronic databases including CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and Web of Science. Studies were screened and selected according to predefined eligibility criteria, focusing on those that evaluated the impact of nursing interventions on adult. Data extraction and risk-of-bias assessment were independently performed by two researchers. Results : A total of 647 studies were identified, and seven met the inclusion criteria for qualitative analysis. The included studies demonstrated that high-quality nursing care significantly improves clinical outcomes and reduces complications in patients receiving ECMO. Effective nursing interventions included prone positioning combined with ECMO for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, meticulous infection control, comprehensive and continuous nursing protocols, skilled nursing, and multidisciplinary management. These interventions have been shown to improve oxygenation, reduce complications, such as bleeding, manage blood pressure, and enhance overall clinical outcomes. Conclusion : High-quality nursing interventions are critical to improve survival and reduce complications in patients receiving ECMO. Implementing a multidisciplinary approach and comprehensive nursing protocols, including infection control and psychological support, is essential for the effective management of these patients. The findings of this study provide a foundation for the development of practical guidelines and educational programs to improve the quality of care for patients undergoing ECMO, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of ECMO treatment and patient outcomes.

Because the oral mucositis is often inevitable in acute leukemia patients during chemotherapy, the efforts must be made to keep these leukemia patients from oral mucositis. So we tried to develop two oral care protocols for reducing the level of oral mucositis during cytotoxic therapy through literature review and our clinical experience. This quasi-experimental study was performed to compare the prohpylatic value of these oral care protocols. Thirty-nine subjects were assigned to one of three groups. The first group performed bivon-normal saline gargling protocol, the second group performed chlorhexidine gargling protocol, and the last contrast group kept traditonal gargling protocol. The Oral Assessment Guide(OAG), the Beck's perception of oral comfort were used to assess oral status and subject's oral discomfort during chemotherapy. Each subjects were observed daily from the start of the chemotherapy until Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) reached $1,000/mm^3$. It continued about 2-4 weeks. The data was analyzed by ANCOVA and Kruskal-Wallis one way ANOVA, chi-sqare, survival analysis. The results were as follows : The contrast group showed significantly highest mean score of the OAG and Beck's perception of oral discomfort among three groups from second week to third week. However chie-test and survial analysis showed that the incidence of severe mucositis were not significantly different among three groups. Conclusively we recommend that nurses who care acute leukmia patients use bivon-normal saline gargling protocol be careful to occur severe mucositis during chemotherapy.
