This study tried to the answer to the question : “How does the human communication happen between clinical nurse and patient\ulcorner” To answer that, a micro-ethnographic research method was used and I performed field work at the orthopedic ward in one Korean metropolitan city. After analysis of interview data, observational data and field notes, I could understand that clinical nurse-patient communication performed for clinical decision making, providing patient education and emotional support. Prepared nurse communicate with patient more effectively, eventually can establish more trust relationship with patient. Conclusively I discussed about the way of nurse's skill acquisition, need of collaborative conference with doctor and nurse, and curriculum development to promote nurses's understanding of human.
The purpose of this study was to identify whether ethical values of nursing students are deontological or utilitarinian. The subjects of this study were consisted of 163 nursing students. The data was collected from September 3 to 30, 1997. Sub-scale of Nursing Ethical Values(Lee, 1990) were used to measure human life area, nurse-patient relationship area, nurse-nursing task relationship area, nurse-colleague relationship area. Data were analyzed by SPSS for Windows program. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The students took the position of utilitarian slightly in human life area. 2. The students took deontological position slightly in nurse-patient relationships area. 3. The students took deontological position slightly in nurse-nursing task relationships area. 4. The students took deontological position greatly in nurse-colleague relationships area. 5. There were significant relationship between nurse-colleague relationship area and both human life area and nurse-patient relationship area(p< .01). 6. The ethical values of human life area related to religion(p< .01) and attitude of nursing(p< .05). The ethical values of nurse-colleague relationships area related to attitude of nursing(p< .01).
Objectives: To evaluate the occurrence of patient adverse events in Korean hospitals as perceived by nurses and examine the correlation between patient adverse events with the nurse practice environment at nurse and hospital level. Methods: In total, 3096 nurses working in 60 general inpatient hospital units were included. A two-level logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: At the hospital level, patient adverse events included patient falls (60.5%), nosocomial infections (51.7%), pressure sores (42.6%) and medication errors (33.3%). Among the hospital-level explanatory variables associated with the nursing practice environment, 'physician-nurse relationship' correlated with medication errors while 'education for improving quality of care' affected patient falls. Conclusions: The doctor-nurse relationship and access to education that can improve the quality of care at the hospital level may help decrease the occurrence of patient adverse events.
The purpose of the present research is to evaluate the therapeutic ingredients-empathy, warmth, and intimacy - as perceived by patient in the relationship with nurses during his hospitalization. "Relationship Questionnaire"developed by C. B. Truax during 1963 was administered from September 1976 to December 1976 to a sampling of 61 discharged patients, 20 were received by mail questionnaire, 19 were successfully interviewed by their doctor at a regular psychotherapy meeting, 22 were contacted by nurses or psychiatric residents at discharge day. Findings showed that 1) the total mean score of therapeutic ingredients of nurses was 9. 54 ; 2)the total mean score of empathy, warmth and intimacy was 10. 10, 9.57, and 9.00 : 3) there was the significant relationship between therapeutic ingredients and other variables-sex, education, number of admission, helpfulness ratings of admission and, present health condition- : 4) there was no significant. relationship between therapeutic ingredients as patient′s perception and age, duration of admission, or motivation of admission, or follow - up rare ; 5) there was no relationship among empathy, warmth and intimacy ; 6) tile ranking of the important psychiatric personnel who were marked as the helper at the treatment and understanding for patient′s recovery, was psychiatric doctor and nurse and then nurse student and then nurse aid.
Purpose: The purpose was to investigate nurse staffing levels and patient outcomes(nosocomial infection, patient fall, pressure ulcer). Method: The subjects of this study were 305 nurses from 20 general hospitals who worked at 39 medical and surgical wards. Self-reporting questionnaire which was developed by the writer through preceding study was used. In data analysis, SPSS WIN 10.0. program was utilized for descriptive statistics, ANOVA. Result: The mean of patient-to-nurse ration was 5.2:1. 65% among 20 hospitals was over 300 beds, 90 was located in urban area and 55 was private hospitals. Patient-to-nurse ration of hospitals in under 300 beds or rural area or private ownership was lower than hospitals in 300 beds or urban area or public ownership. 89.9 among 39 wards was medical or surgical wards. The mean of length of stay, 8-14 days got a majority and showed higher patient-to-nurse ration. Of the general characteristics, rural was significantly hight to patient fall(F=3.205, p<.05), medical unit was significantly high to patient fall, pressure ulcer(patient fall: F=8.890, p<.001, pressure ulcer: F=3.399, p<.05) and over 15 days was significantly higher than under 14 days of the mean of length of stay. And there was significant relationship between over 6.0:1 and over 4.0:1 to less than 5.0:1(F=4.817,p<.01). Conclusion: This study has shown a relationship between patient-to-nurse ration and patient fall using not objective research tool but self-reporting questionnaire. Therefore further research is needed to study using objective research tool. Based on this study, the effect of nurse staffing levels on patient outcome also has to be studied.

The ethical values of human life slightly took up the position of utilitarian. 2. The ethical value of nurse-patient relationship slightly took up the deontological position. 3. The ethical value of nurse-nursing task relationship slightly took up the deontological position. 4. The ethical value of nurse-collegue relationship greatly took up the deontological position. 5. The ethical values of nurses related to demographic characteristics of age, marital status, position. Therefore it is suggested that new strategies and continuing education programs be established to help clinical nurses formlulate higher ethical values.
This study was undertaken in an attempt to; 1) measure value orientation of nursing activities, 2) identify the relationship between nurse's role perception and patient's expectation, and 3) evaluate the pattern of nursing education and nursing service administration. 203 hospitalized adults and 203 professional nurses from 11 general hospitals in Seoul during the period of July to December 1973 were tested according to questionnaire based on 4 categories of clinical nursing activities, 1) physical care, 2) observation and control, 3) psycho-social care and 4) therapeutic measures. Results of the study are as follows: 1. Nurses were more concerned than patients in the physical care category. Significant difference was revealed by p<.01 level (t=2.800). Mean value score of nurses was average (2.84), and mean value score of patients was relative' y low (2.49). None of the physical care category questionnaire items were over 3.5. 2. Respondents from hospitals of total care system revealed significant difference in the physical care category by P〈.025 level. (t=2.242). Mean value score of both group were average level (nurse 2.90, patient 2.53), nurses showed higher concern. 3. Difference between nurse's role perception and patient's expectation in observation and control category was revealed non- significance by p〉0.05. level (t=1.238). Mean value score of both group revealed relatively high (nurse=3.44, patient 3.19). 4. Difference between nurse's role perception and patient〉expectation in psycho-social cart category revealed non- significance by p〉.05 level (t=0.758), Mean value score of both group revealed average level (nurse =2.71, patient =2.53), 5. Non- significant difference was noted between B. S. N. and diploma nurse's role perception in the psycho- social care category by p> 0.1 level (t=0.316). 4. Difference between nurse's role perception and patient's expectation in the rapeutic me assures category revealed non- significance by p〉0.05 level) t=0.503). Horses showed high concern by mean value score 3.56 level and patients relatively high by 3.41. All items of this category revealed very high or relatively high value score.
This study was about nurse's helping behaviors and the purpose of the study was to find out the nurse's helping behaviors, to identify the nurse's helping behavior level by the nurses personal back-ground and to find out the relationship between the nurse's helping behavior and patient's self-exploration. The subjects, consisting of 192 adults in-patients who had less acute physical problem and 192 registered nurses working on these ward in 3 hospitals in Seoul and 1 hospital in Kang Won province of Korea. The data were collected from Jan. to rob. 1986 through the descriptive responds and self-reported questionaires. The instruments used for this study were Carkhuff's index of communication. Henderson's Irritating Listening Behavior, revised by the Kim(1984) and patient problem understanding scale, patients trust scale on nurse, developed by the Kim(1984). Analysis of the Data was done by use of mean, t-test, F-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results of study are summerized as follows; 1. Mean of nurse's helping behavior was 1.84 out of 4. These point were less than 3.0 which means the minimum points as the facilitative helper. 3. There was no significant differences of nurses helping behaviors to the nurse's personal back-ground (p<.05). 3. There were positive rotation between the nurse's helping behaviors and patient's self-exploration behavior (P<0001). In conclusion, 1 may can give some suggestion, according to the study results: 1. The systematic study about nurse's helping behavior is need all over the Korea. 2. Educational program for the facilitative relationship between nurses and patient must be developed, 3. Further detailed analysis methods are need on the independent variables of patient's self-explorations behavior.

Those who have religion took up more deontological position than those who have not. Those who have positive attitude of nursing and firm ethical standards took up more deontological position than those who have not. Nursing involves deep human interpersonal relationships between nurses and patients. But in modem Korea, the nurse - patient relationship tends to be ritualistic and mechanestic. Patients usually express the hope that nurses be more tender and kind. Patients expect nurses to express their warmth especially through nonverbal behaviour. This study was conducted to identify patients' preferences for nurse's nonverbal expressions of warmth. Through the confirmation of these preferences, nurses may learn how to enhance their interpersonal relationships with patients. Subjects for the study were 73 patients who had been admitted to a university teaching hospital for at least three days and agreed to be interviewed by the investigator. The interactions were studied nonverbal expressions of warmth during nursing rounds and administration of oral medication. The interview schedule was expecially designed by the investigator to measure the nurse's posture, the distance between the nurse and the patient, the nurse's eye contact, facial expression, hand motion and head nodding. Data analysis included frequencies, percentages and X²-test. The results of this study may be summerized as follows : 1. Patient's preferences for nurse's nonverbal expressions of warmth during nursing rounds. Preferred nurse's posture was sitting(50.7%) or standing(49.3%) opposite the patient. Preferred distance between the nurse and the patient was close to the bed(93.2%), less than 1m. Preferred eye contact was directed to the patient's eyes or their affected part (41.1%). Preferred facial expression was a smile(97.3%). Preferred hand motions were light gestures(41.1%). Patients preferred head nodding which approved their own opinions(69.9%). 2. Patient's preferences for nurse's nonverval expressions of warmth during administration of oral medication. Preferred nurse's posture was standing and waiting to confirm that the medication had been taken(58.9%). Preferred distance from the patient was at arm's length, 0.5-1m(64.4%). Patients preferred direct eye contact(58.9%) and a smile(94.5%). Patients preferred that the nurse put the medicine directly the patient's hand(64.4%). Whether the nurse nodded her head or not was not considered important. 3. The relation of general characteristics and patient's preferences for nurse's nonverbal expressions of warmth during nursing rounds and administration of oral medication. During nursing rounds, the age of subjects(p=0.010) and the standard of education(p=0.026) related to the distance between the nurse and the patient. The sick hospital ward related to the eye contact(p=0.017) and facial expression(p=0.010). During administration of oral medication, the age of subjects(p=0.044) and days of hospital treatment (p=0.043) and the sick hospital ward(p=0.0004) related to the facial expression. From this study, nurses can learn what kind nonverbal expressions of warmth are preferred by patients during rounds and administration and thus will enhance nurse- patient interpersonal relationships.
