  • In this study, a new numerical procedure for the generation of a nonlinear tailored group of waves is presented. The procedure is based on the transient wave group technique. In order to integrate the nonlinearity during the wave propagation in the computational method, the Navier-Stokes equations are applied as governing equations. The governing equations are discretized by finite volume approximation. The deformation of the free water surface in each time step is pursued with a moving grid. A two-dimensional, numerical wave tank for the simulation of the wave propagation is developed and tested in detail. The numeric results are compared first with analytical wave theories and with measurements, in order to examine the correctness of the numerical wave tank. Wave surface elevation and associated fields of velocity and pressure are numerically computed and compared with measurements. Very good agreements show up.

  • In this study, flood inundations have been simulated by using the numerical model FLUMEN solving the shallow-water equations with a finite volume method. Before applying to a real problem, the numerical model is first applied to simplified problems. Obtained numerical results are verified by comparing to available analytical solutions and laboratory measurements. Reasonable agreements are observed. The model is then applied to a simulation of flood events with real geometries. The results of the present study provide basic informations for a flood inundation map.

  • A multidimensional numerical simulation for flows in an engine with axisymmetric geometry was performed. Three kinds of differencing schemes, namely, skew upwind differencing scheme (SUDS), interpolated upwind differencing scheme (IUDS), upwind differencing scheme (UDS), are used in a comparative study. Simultaneously, the effects of the artificial dampings and the grids on numerical results are estimated. Compared with the measurements, the calculations with SUDS and proper artificial damping show very similar qualitative tendency with observed results. But there are some discrepancies due to numerical errors and unclear boundary conditions.

  • In this study, railway plate girder bridges are modeled in detail for finite elements within 3-dimension and analyzed by SAP 2000N, a commercial finite element analysis tool. Especially, loads of trains gained by statistical averages of measured true loads of trains are used for analysis. When the loads are adapted, the numerical dynamic responses are very close to real measurements. Resonant speed areas by train types are evaluated from the results of numerical analyses by different driving speeds of trains. For dynamic numerical analysis of railway bridges, reasonable guides are also discussed.

  • The numerical models of the parabolic equation, applicable only to the progressive wave, and hyperblic equation, which may consider even the reflected wave, were developed and applied to the area of the submerged circular shoal and then results obtained from both models were compared with experimental measurements and each other. The hyperbolic model was further applied to both the detaced breakwater and the breakwater with a gap. The numerical results were plotted and compated with the existing data. Numerical solutions were obtained with the finite difference method.

  • Observability of two spacecraft system is considered with relative line-of-sight vector measurements between two spacecraft system for autonomous navigation using the linear observability analysis. First, the dynamical equations and measurement models are introduced, and the basic assumption of attitude knowledge for one of two spacecrafts is explained. Then, we introduce a pair of nominal orbits of two spacecraft system, and the observability analysis for the nominal orbits is presented with the available measurements (for the numerical observability analysis). • State estimators are used to monitor the operating states of power systems in modern EMS. It iteratively calculates the voltage profile of the currently operating power system with voltage, current, and power measurements gathered from the entire system. All the measurements are usually assumed to be obtained simultaneously. It is practically impossible, however, to maintain the synchronism of the measurement data. Recently, phasor measurements synchronized via satellite are used for the operation of these power systems. This paper describes the modified state estimator used to support the processing of synchronized phasor measurements. Synchronized phasor measurements are found to provide synchronism of measurement data and improve the accuracy/redundancy of the measurement data for state estimation. The details of the developed state estimation program and some numerical results of operation are presented.

  • This paper presents a satellite relative navigation strategy for formation flying, which chooses an appropriate navigation algorithm according to the operating environment. Not only global positioning system (GPS) measurements, but laser measurements can also be utilized to determine the relative positions of satellites. Laser data is used solely or together with GPS measurements. Numerical simulations were conducted to compare the relative navigation algorithm using only laser data and laser data combined with GPS data. If an accurate direction of laser pointing is estimated, the relative position of satellites can be determined using only laser measurements. If not, the combined algorithm has better performance, and is irrelevant to the precision of the relative angle data between two satellites in spherical coordinates. Within 10 km relative distance between satellites, relative navigation using double difference GPS data makes more precise relative position estimation results. If the simulation results are applied to the relative navigation strategy, the proper algorithm can be chosen, and the relative position of satellites can be estimated precisely in changing mission environments.

  • The objective of this study was to perform 3D solid modeling from 3D scanned surface images of cotton and silk in order to calculate the thermal heat transfer responses using numerical simulations. Continuing from the previous methodology, which provided 3D surface data for a fabric through optical measurements of the fabric microstructure, a simplified 3D solid model, containing a defined unit cell, pattern unit and fabric structure, was prepared. The loft method was used for 3D solid-model generation, and heat transfer calculations, made for the fabric, were then carried out using the 3D solid model. As a result, comprehensive protocols for 3D solid-model generation were established based on the optical measurements of real fabric samples. This method provides an effective means of using 3D information for building 3D models of actual fabrics and applying the model in numerical simulations. The developed process can be used as the basis for other analogous research areas to investigate the physical characteristics of any fabrics.
