The resistivity method has been used to image the electrical properties of the subsurface. Especially, this method has become suitable for monitoring since data could be rapidly and automatically acquired. In this study, we developed a time-lapse inversion algorithm for the interpretation of resistivity monitoring data. The developed inversion algorithm imposes a big penalty on the model parameter with small change, while a minimal penalty on the model parameter with large change compared to the reference model. Through the numerical experiments, we can ensure that the time-lapse inversion result shows more accurate and focused image where model parameters have changed. Also, applying the timelapse inversion method to the leakage detection of an embankment dam, we can confirm that there are three major leakage zones, but they have not changed over time.
We introduce a depth scaling strategy to improve the accuracy of frequency-domain elastic full waveform inversion (FWI) using the new pseudo-Hessian matrix for seismic data without low-frequency components. The depth scaling strategy is based on the fact that the damping factor in the Levenberg-Marquardt method controls the energy concentration in the gradient. In other words, a large damping factor makes the Levenberg-Marquardt method similar to the steepest-descent method, by which shallow structures are mainly recovered. With a small damping factor, the Levenberg-Marquardt method becomes similar to the Gauss-Newton methods by which we can resolve deep structures as well as shallow structures. In our depth scaling strategy, a large damping factor is used in the early stage and then decreases automatically with the trend of error as the iteration goes on. With the depth scaling strategy, we can gradually move the parameter-searching region from shallow to deep parts. This flexible damping factor plays a role in retarding the model parameter update for shallow parts and mainly inverting deeper parts in the later stage of inversion. By doing so, we can improve deep parts in inversion results. The depth scaling strategy is applied to synthetic data without lowfrequency components for a modified version of the SEG/EAGE overthrust model. Numerical examples show that the flexible damping factor yields better results than the constant damping factor when reliable low-frequency components are missing.
Downhole testing and seismic CPT (SCPT) have been widely used to evaluate stiffness profiles of the subgrade. Advantages of downhole testing and SCPT such as low cost, easy operation and a simple seismic source have got these testings more frequently adopted in site investigation. For the automated analysis of downhole testing and SCPT, the concept of interval measurements has been practiced. In this paper. a new inversion procedure to deal tilth the interval measurements for the automated downhole testing and SCPT (including a newlydeveloped continuous SCPT) is proposed. The forward modeling in the new inversion procedure incorporates ray path theory based on Snell's law. The formulation for the inversion analysis is derived from the maximum likelihood approach, which estimates the maximum likelihood of obtaining a particular travel time from a source to a receiver. Verification of the new inversion procedure was performed with numerical simulations of SCPT using synthesized profiles. The results of the inversion analyses performed for the synthetic data show that the new inversion analysis is a valid procedure which enhances Va profiles determined by downhole testing and SCPT.
It was necessary to devise new techniques to overcome and enhance the resolution limits of traveltime tomography. Waveform inversion has been one of the methods for giving very high resolution result. High resolution image could be acquired because waveform inversion used not only phase but amplitude. But waveform inversion was much time consuming Job because forward and backward modeling was needed at each iteration step. Velocity-stress method was used for effective modeling. Resolution limits of imaging methods such as travel time inversion, acoustic and elastic waveform inversion were investigated with numerical models. it was investigated that Resolution limit of waveform inversion was similar tn resolution limit of migration derived by Schuster. Horizontal resolution limit could be improved with increased coverage by adding VSP data in cross hole that had insufficient coverage. Also, waveform inversion was applied to realistic models to evaluate applicability and using initial guess of travel time tomograms to reduce non-linearity of waveform inversion showed that the better reconstructed image could be acquired.

In this paper, An inversion technique to reconstruct permittivity profiles of 2-D inhomogeneous dielectric objects by iterativeprocess using the moment-methodand improved newton's algoritham is presented. In order to reduce the noise effect in the scattered fieldon the reconstructed permittivity profiles, the cell size of inversescattering is made be larger than that of forward scattering. Performing numerical calculations of dielectric scatterer it is demonstrated that this inversion is able to reconstruct dielectric objectshaving large size and inhomogeneous characteristics, which is insentive tothe noise effect in the scattered field on the reconstructed result.
In this paper a numerical experiment is conducted to determine the low acoustic impedance of a thin oil or gas reservoir from a seismogram by using the generalized linear inversion method. The seismograms used are normal incident synthetic seismograms containing p-wave primary reflections, multiples, and peg-leg multiples on the layers consisting of oil-, gas-, water-filled sandstone incased in shales. In this experiment the acoustic impedance, the location of reservoir boundary, thickness, and source wavelet are assumed initially and revised iteratively by the least-squares-error technique until the difference between the seismogram and calculated one is very small. This experiment shows that the acoustic impedance and thickness, about 10 m thick, can be determined by the inversion.

The interpretation of resistivity data has, so far, mainly been made under the assumption that the earth is of relatively simple structure and then using one or two-dimensional inversion scheme. Since real earth structure and topography are fully three-dimensional and very complicated In nature, however, such assumptions often lead to misinterpretation of the earth structures. In such situations, three-dimensional inversion is probably the only way to get correct image of the earth. In this study, we have developed a three-dimensional inversion code using the finite element solution for the forward problem. The forward modeling algorithm simulates the real field situation with irregular topography. The inverse problem is solved iteratively using the least-squares method with smoothness constraint. Our inversion scheme employs ACB (Active Constraint Balancing) to enhance the resolving power of the inversion. Including Irregular surface topography in the inversion, we can accurately define the earth structures without artifact in the numerical tests. We could get reasonable image of earth structure by Inverting the real field data sets taken over highway bridge construction site.

In this paper, the transient electromagneti wave scattering at dielectric cylinder is studied by new numerical analysis method. Basic formulation of boundary integral equation (BIE) for numerical method is started weighted residual technique. BIE is made to two simultaneous equation at surface inner and outside point of dielectric cylinder in extended boundary condition (EBC) and surface boundary condition (SBC). Numerical method is used Boundary element method (BEM) that is two form, one is direct method and the other is indirect method, so that this method that transformes operator inversion martics is used numerical analysis. A good agreement of this numerical solution and the other results is obtained.
A nonlinear tracking control technique developed for the control of nonlinear systems has been applied to the autopilot design of missile system. The difficulties in the application of inversion based control methods such as input-output feedback linearization and sliding mode control due to nonminimum phase characteristics are discussed. To avoid the stability problem associated with unstable zero dynamics, the input-output feedback linearization is applied with output-redefinition method to normal acceleration control. The output-redefinition method gives an indirect way to apply the nonlinear controls to nonminimum phase plants by redefining the plant output such that the tracking control of the modified output ensures the asymptotic tracking of the original output. The numerical simulation shows satisfactory results both for nominal and for slightly perturbed missile systems adopting the sliding mode control technique. However, the robustness problem in this method is briefly investigated and verified with the simulation.

In this study, which focuses on ice storage, a fundamental study in cooling and solidification was performed, including the interesting phenomena of density inversion, supercooling and dendritic ice. A numerical study was performed for natural convection and ice formation considering existence of subcooling and dendritic ice were analyzed numerically by using finite difference method and boundary fixing method. In the mesh, the solid fraction was introduced with adding as a term to the energy conservation equation. A flow in the dendrite was modelled as a flow in a porous medium, and the momentum conservation equation was modified to incorporate resistance forces involved in flows through porous media. A numerical solution of the time dependencies of dendrite area and dense ice front was successfully obtained, and the numerical results were good agreement with experimental results. Based on this methodology, a discussion was made of phenomena and characteristics of cooling and freezing processes under various conditions.
