  • In this paper, we develop 3-dimensional FMM using the RWG basis function to simulate the plat-type antenna and reduce the computing time. To examine the efficiency of FMM algorithm, a scattering by a simple PEC plane is analysed and the correct current distribution is obtained. This 3-dimensional FMM is applied to analysis a microstrip antenna and shows good performance.

  • As in any engineering application, the problem of structural assessment should face the different uncertainties present in real world. The main source of uncertainty in Health Monitoring System (HMS) applications are those related to the sensor accuracy, the theoretical models and the variability in structural parameters and applied loads. In present work, two methodologies have been developed to deal with these uncertainties in order to adopt reliable decisions related to the presence of damage. A simple example, a steel beam analysis, is considered in order to establish a liable comparison between them. Also, such methodologies are used with a developed structural assessment algorithm that consists in a direct and consistent comparison between sensor data and numerical model results, both affected by uncertainty. Such algorithm is applied to a simple concrete laboratory beam, tested till rupture, to show it feasibility and operational process. From these applications several conclusions are derived with a high value, regarding the final objective of the work, which is the implementation of this algorithm within a HMS, developed and applied into a prototype structure.

  • This paper provides a simple numerical method to determine the optimal parameters of tuned mass damper (TMD) and viscoelastic dampers (VEDs) in frame structure for wind vibration control considering the soil-structure interation (SSI) effect in frequency domain. Firstly, the numerical model of frame structure equipped with TMD and VEDs considering SSI effect is established in frequency domain. Then, the genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to obtain the optimal parameters of VEDs and TMD. The optimization process is demonstrated by a 20-storey frame structure supported by pile group for different soil conditions. Two wind resistant systems are considered in the analysis, the Structure-TMD system and the Structure-TMD-VEDs system. The example proves that this method can quickly determine the optimal parameters of energy dissipation devices compared with the traditional finite element method, thus is practically valuable.

  • This paper is basic study of seismic response analysis for the large scaled structures subjected to seismic loading. The authors propose seismic response analysis algorithm for the multi-story structures, which are subjected to ground acceleration. This analysis method is derived from an combination of the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) and Newmark method. Numerical computation is performed for simple multi-story structures acting on an arbitrary ground acceleration. Numerical results by the TSCM which is applied to the various strong ground motion are compared with results by central difference method and Runge- Kutta method.

  • The natural convective heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure with a heating source has been studied by experiment and numerical analysis. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume method, a SIMPLE algorithm was adopted to solve a pressure term. The parameters for the numerical study are positions and surface temperatures of a heating source i.e., Y /H =0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 11$^{\circ}C$ $\leq$ΔT$\leq$59$^{\circ}C$. The results of isotherms and velocity vectors have been represented, and the numerical results showed a good agreement with experimental values. Based on the numerical results, the mean Nusselt number of the rectangular enclosure wall could be expressed as a function of Grashof number.

  • Nonlinear equations of structures are generally solved numerically by the iterative solution of linear equations. However, this iterative procedure diverges when the tangent stiffness is ill-conditioned which occurs near limit points. In other words, a major challenge with simple iterative methods is failure caused by a singular or near singular Jacobian matrix. In this paper, using the Newton-Raphson algorithm based on Davidenko's equations, the iterations can traverse the limit point without difficulty. It is argued that the propose algorithm may be both more computationally efficient and more robust compared to the other algorithm when tracing path through severe nonlinearities such as those associated with structural collapse. Two frames are analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the results are compared with the previous methods. The ability of the proposed method, particularly for tracing the limit points, is demonstrated by those numerical examples.

  • The radius and coordinate of sliding circle are taken as searching variables in slope stability analysis. Genetic algorithm is applied for searching for critical factor of safety. In order to search for critical factor of safety in slope stability analysis efficiently and in a robust manner, some improvements for simple genetic algorithm are proposed. Taking the advantages of efficiency of neighbor-search of the simulated annealing and the robustness of genetic algorithm, a hybrid optimization method is presented. The numerical computation shows that the procedure can determine the minimal factor of safety and be applied to slopes with any geometry, layering, pore pressure and external load distribution. The comparisons demonstrate that the genetic algorithm provides a same solution when compared with elasto-plastic finite element program.

  • This paper desfcribes the formulation for the analysis of the free vibration of a circular cylindrical shell with elastic supports by the transfer influence coefficient method. This method was developed on the base of the concept of the successive transmission of dynamic influence coefficients. The analysis algorithm for circular cylindrical shell elastically restrained by springs, which plays an important role in many industrial fields, is discussed. The supporting springs have the axial, circumferential, radial and rotational spring constants uniformly distributed along the circumference of the shell. The simple computational results on a personal computer demonstrate the validity of the present method, that is, the numerical high accuracy, the high speed analysis method and the flexibility for programming, compared with results of the transfer matrixmethod and reference. We also confirmed that the present algorithm could obtain the solutions of high accuracy for system with a number of intermediate rigid supports. And we could easily treat the intermediate support and all boundary conditions by adequately varying the values of spring constants.

  • A general framework for the nonlinear geometric analysis of elastic space trusses is presented. Both total Lagrangian and finite incremental formulations are derived from the three key ingredients of statics, kinematics and constitutive law. Particular features of the general methodology include the preservation of static-kinematic duality through the concept of fictitious forces and deformations, and an exact description for arbitrarily large displacements, albeit small strain, that can be specialized to any order of geometrical nonlinearity. As for the numerical algorithm, we consider specifically the finite incremental case and suggest the use of a conventional, simple and flexible arc-length based method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate and validate the accuracy of the approach.

  • In this paper, the finite element equations for the transient linear viscoelastic stress analysis are presented in time domain, whose variational formulation is derived by using the Galerkin's method based on the equations of motion in time integral. Since the inertia terms are not included in the variational formulation, the time integration schemes such as the Newmark's method widely used in the classical dynamic analysis based on the equations of motion in time differential are not required in the development of that formulation, resulting in a computationally simple and stable numerical algorithm. The viscoelastic material is assumed to behave as a standard linear solid in shear and an elastic solid in dilatation. To show the validity of the presented method, two numerical examples are solved nuder plane strain and plane stress conditions and good results are obtained.
