  • Deflection in a beam of a composite frame is a serviceability design criterion. This paper presents a methodology for rapid prediction of long-term mid-span deflections of beams in composite frames subjected to service load. Neural networks have been developed to predict the inelastic mid-span deflections in beams of frames (typically for 20 years, considering cracking, and time effects, i.e., creep and shrinkage in concrete) from the elastic moments and elastic mid-span deflections (neglecting cracking, and time effects). These models can be used for frames with any number of bays and stories. The training, validating, and testing data sets for the neural networks are generated using a hybrid analytical-numerical procedure of analysis. Multilayered feed-forward networks have been developed using sigmoid function as an activation function and the back propagation-learning algorithm for training. The proposed neural networks are validated for an example frame of different number of spans and stories and the errors are shown to be small. Sensitivity studies are carried out using the developed neural networks. These studies show the influence of variations of input parameters on the output parameter. The neural networks can be used in every day design as they enable rapid prediction of inelastic mid-span deflections with reasonable accuracy for practical purposes and require computational effort which is a fraction of that required for the available methods.

  • M/G/1 queueing system is one of the most widely used one to model the real system. When operating a real systems, since it often takes cost, some control policies that change the operation scheme are adopted. In particular, the N-policy is the most popular among many control policies. Almost all researches on queueing system are based on the assumption that the arrival rates of customers into the queueing system is constant, In this paper, we consider the M/G/1 queueing system whose arrival rate varies according to the servers status : idle, set-up and busy states. For this study, we construct the steady state equations of queue lengths by means of the supplementary variable method, and derive the PGF(probability generating function) of them. The L-S-T(Laplace Stieltjes transform) of waiting time and average waiting time are also presented. We also develop an algorithm to find the optimal N-value from which the server starts his set-up. An analysis on the performance measures to minimize total operation cost of queueing system is included. We finally investigate the behavior of system operation cost as the optimal N and arrival rate change by a numerical study.

  • This study is concerned with selecting mutually dependent quality improvement alternatives with resource constraints. These qualify improvement alternatives art different fro the tradition at alternatives which are independent from each other. In other words, selection of any improvement alternative requires other related specific improvement. Also the overall product quality in a multi stage manufacturing process is characterized by a complex multiplication method rather than a simple addition method which dose not allow to solve a linear knapsack problem despite its popularity in the traditional study. This study suggests a non-linear integer programming model for selecting mutually dependent quality improvement alternatives in multi-stage manufacturing process. In order to apply the model to selecting alternatives. This study also suggests a heuristic mode1 based on a dynamic programming model which is more practical than the non-linear integer programming model. The logic of the heuristic model enables 1) to estimate improvement effectiveness values on all improvement alternatives specifically defined for this study. 2) to arrange the effectiveness values in a descending order, and 3) to select the best one among the alternatives based on their forward and backward linkage relationships. This process repeats to selects other best alternatives within the resource constraints. This process is presented in a Computer programming in Appendix A. Alsc a numerical example of model application is presented in Chapter 4.

  • We develop an optimization algorithm for a periodic review inventory system under a stochastic budget constraint. While most conventional studies on the periodic review inventory system consider a simple budget limit in terms of the inventory investment being less than a fixed budget, this study adopts more realistic assumption in that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is arrived. Therefore, probability is employed to express the budget constraint. That is, the probability of total inventory investment to be less than budget must be greater than a certain value assuming that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is arrived. We express the budget constraint in terms of the Lagrange multiplier and suggest a numerical method to obtain optional values of the cycle time and the safety factor to the system. We also perform the sensitivity analysis in order to investigate the dependence of important quantities on the budget constraint. We find that, as the amount of budget increases, the cycle time and the average inventory level increase, whereas the Lagrange multiplier decreases. In addition, as budget increases, the safety factor increases and reaches to a certain level. In particular, we derive the condition for the maximum safety factor.

  • In this paper, we introduce a system and a set of algorithms for disseminating popular content to a large group of wireless clients spread over a wide area. This area is partitioned into multiple cells and there is a base station in each cell which is able to broadcast to the clients within its radio coverage. Dissemination of information in the proposed system is hybrid in nature: Each base station broadcasts a fraction of information in the form of random linear combinations of data blocks. Then the clients cooperate by exchanging packets to obtain their desired messages while they are moving arbitrarily over the area. In this paper, fundamental trade-offs between the average information delivery completion time at the clients and different parameters of the system such as bandwidth usage by the base stations, average energy consumption by the clients and the popularity of the spread information are studied. Moreover different heuristic algorithms are proposed to control and maintain a balance over these trade-offs. Also, the more complicated case of multiple sessions where each client is interested in an arbitrary subset of sessions is considered and two variants of the basic dissemination algorithm are proposed. The performance of all the proposed algorithms is evaluated via extensive numerical experiments.

  • Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising approach for cellular communication due to its energy efficiency and high achievable data rate. These advantages, however, can be realized only when channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter. Since there are many antennas, CSI is too large to feed back without compression. To compress CSI, prior work has applied compressive sensing (CS) techniques and the fact that CSI can be sparsified. The adopted sparsifying bases fail, however, to reflect the spatial correlation and channel conditions or to be feasible in practice. In this paper, we propose a new sparsifying basis that reflects the long-term characteristics of the channel, and needs no change as long as the spatial correlation model does not change. We propose a new reconstruction algorithm for CS, and also suggest dimensionality reduction as a compression method. To feed back compressed CSI in practice, we propose a new codebook for the compressed channel quantization assuming no other-cell interference. Numerical results confirm that the proposed channel feedback mechanisms show better performance in point-to-point (single-user) and point-to-multi-point (multi-user) scenarios.

  • In this paper, we address a new robust optimization problem in a multiuser multiple-input single-output broadcasting system with simultaneous wireless information and power transmission, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends energy and information simultaneously to multiple users equipped with a single antenna. Assuming that perfect channel-state information (CSI) for all channels is not available at the BS, the uncertainty of the CSI is modeled by an Euclidean ball-shaped uncertainty set. To optimally design transmit beamforming weights and receive power splitting, an average total transmit power minimization problem is investigated subject to the individual harvested power constraint and the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio constraint at each user. Due to the channel uncertainty, the original problem becomes a homogeneous quadratically constrained quadratic problem, which is NP-hard. The original design problem is reformulated to a relaxed semidefinite program, and then two different approaches based on convex programming are proposed, which can be solved efficiently by the interior point algorithm. Numerical results are provided to validate the robustness of the proposed algorithms.

  • Provisioning of quality of service (QoS) is a key issue in any multi-media system. However, in wireless systems, supporting QoS requirements of different traffic types is a more challenging problem due to the need to simultaneously minimize two performance metrics - the probability of dropping a handover call and the probability of blocking a new call. Since QoS requirements are not as stringent for non-real-time traffic, as opposed to real-time traffic, more calls can be accommodated by releasing some bandwidth from the already admitted non-real-time traffic calls. If the released bandwidth that is used to handle handover calls is larger than the released bandwidth that is used for new calls, then the resulting probability of dropping a handover call is smaller than the probability of blocking a new call. In this paper, we propose an efficient call admission control algorithm that relies on adaptive multi-level bandwidth-allocation scheme for non-realtime calls. The scheme allows reduction of the call dropping probability, along with an increase in the bandwidth utilization. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme is capable of attaining negligible handover call dropping probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization.

  • Several voltage instability/collapse problems that have occurred in the electric utility industry worldwide have gained the attention of engineers and researchers of electric power systems. This paper proposes an effective calculation scheme of the extreme loading point and nose curves(P-V curves) using modified Newton-Raphson(N-R) load flow method and the Continuation Method. This method provides detail and visual information of the power system voltage profile and operating margin ro operators and planners. In this paper, a modified load flow claculation method for ill-conditioned power systems is introduced for the purpose of seeking more precise load flow solutions and nose curves, and the Continuation Method is also used as a part of the solution algorithm for the calculation of extreme loading point and nose curves. The conventional polar coordinate based N-R load flow program is modified to avoid numerical difficulties caused by the singularity of the Jacobian matrix occuring in the vicinity of extreme loading point of heavily loaded systems. Application results of the proposed method to Klos-Kerner 11-bus system and modified IEE-30-bus system are presented to assure the usefulness of the approach.

  • In spite of the advantages of lightweight, low profile, and mass productions, microstrip array antenna has inherently the scan blindness problems in case of wide angle scan. And this scan blindness can be overcome by using cavity-backed microstrip radiator. In this paper, we presented the algorithm of analyzing skewed cavity-backed microstrip array and verified the validity of the proposed numerical results with those of reference papers. Finally, we show the effect of cavity-backed and skewed grid array structure.
