  • This study is intended for validation of numerical modeling of a residential building which is made to simulate a phenomenon of fire extension from floor to floor. A common residential building which has the area of 80m2 each floor and some combustibles were chosen for numerical modeling. The combustible models were verified through comparing results of numerical simulations and real fire tests. For computational analysis, the Fire Dynamics Simulator was used with Large Eddy Simulation model for turbulence. Consequently, fire-intensity was well predicted and flash-over of rooms were successfully estimated.

  • The present study introduces an architecture for performing efficient numerical analysis by using the Internet and three reconstructing methods of existing numerical analysis codes were presented in order to utilize the architecture. These methods were implemented into a computational fluid dynamics program for solving two-dimensional transient flow problems with free surface. The program was reconstructed with Java technologies and compared with the original one. This study will be a preparation for numerical analysis to participate in web services for engineering.

  • We study numerical methods to obtain the stationary probabilities of continuous-time Markov chains whose embedded chains are periodic. The power method is applied to the balance equations of the periodic embedded Markov chains. The power method can have the convergence speed of exponential rate that is ambiguous in its application to original continuous-time Markov chains since the embedded chains are discrete-time processes. An illustrative example is presented to investigate the numerical iteration of this paper. A numerical study shows that a rapid and stable solution for stationary probabilities can be achieved regardless of periodicity and initial conditions.

  • Recently, the frequency of unexpecting heavy rains has been increased due to abnormal climate and extreme rainfall. There was a limit to analyze 1D or 2D stream flow that was applied simple momentum equation and fixed energy conservation. Therefore, hydrodynamics flow analysis in rivers has been needed 3D numerical analysis for correct stream flow interpretation. In this study, CFD model on FLOW-3D was applied to stream flow analysis, which solves three dimenson RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation) control equation to find out physical behavior and the effect of hydraulic structures. Numerical simulation accomplished those results was compared by using turbulence models such as ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and LES. Those numerical analysis results have been illustrated by the turbulence energy effects, velocity of flow distributions, water level pressure distributions and eddy flows around the piers at Jangwall bridge in urbarn stream.

  • The paper presents a study on the numerical simulation of the behaviour of conventional reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by thin fibre-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) jackets. The study covers the cases of retrofitting RC beams with or without stirrups with jackets reinforced with longitudinal and transverse steel reinforcement or with light wire mesh. The strengthened RC beams to be modelled were tested under static monotonic and fully reversing cyclic loading. The numerical results show that the numerical model used predicted quite well the experimental results.

  • Flow characteristics have one of the effects in the process of engine. The numerical analysis makes it possible to predict the flow fields. This paper presents characteristics of steady flow according to variation of valve lift in a gasoline engine. The numerical computations have been made to observe the pressure distribution in accordance with the variable valve lift. Characteristics of tumble flow and swirl flow according to the variable valve has also been investigated. We could find that tumble ratio and swirl ratio is different between with/without PDA valve. The steady flow test was simulated through three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. As a result, this study shows the possibility of the usage of numerical simulation to predict the flow characteristics for gasoline engine.

  • Numerical modeling for electromagnetic exploration methods are essential to understand behaviours of electromagnetic fields in complex subsurfaces. In this study, a finite element method was adopted as a numerical scheme for the 2.5-dimensional forward problem. And a finite element equation considering linear conductivity variation was proposed when 2.5-dimensional differential equation to couple eletric and magnetic field was implemented. Model parameters were investigated for near-field with large source effects and far-field with responses dominantly by homogeneous half-space. Numerical responses by this study were compared with analytic solutions in homogeneous half-space and compared with other three dimensional numerical results.

  • Presented herein is a numerical study for evaluating the aerodynamic behaviour of equipped bridge deck sections. In the first part, the method adopted is described, in particular concerning turbulence models, meshing requirements and numerical approach. The validation of the procedure represents the aim of the second part of the paper: the results of the numerical simulation in case of two-dimensional, steady, incompressible, turbulent flow around a realistic bridge deck are compared to the data collected from wind-tunnel tests. In order to demonstrate the influence of the section details and of the partial streamlining of the deck geometry on its aerodynamic behaviour, in the third part of the paper the effect of the fairings and of each item of equipment of the section (such as central barriers, side railings and sidewalks) is evaluated. The study has been applied to the deck section of the Normandy cable-stayed bridge.
