Optimum seismic design of reinforced concrete frame structures

  • This paper proposes an automated procedure for optimum seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. This procedure combines a smart pre-processing using a Tree Classification Method (TCM) and a nonlinear optimization technique. First, the TCM automatically creates sections database and assigns sections to structural members. Subsequently, a real valued model of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed in solving the optimization problem. Numerical examples on design optimization of three low- to high-rise RC frame structures under earthquake loads are presented with and without considering strong column-weak beam (SCWB) constraint. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the TCMin seismic design optimization of the structures.

  • A damage identification technique using static displacements was investigated to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. For this, the optimization technique was utilized. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the stiffness of an element. Next, a health index of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Comparisons with numerical and experimental tests were performed to investigate the applicability of the proposed method in the practical field. Various damage scenarios were considered by varying damage-width as well as damage-degree. The influence of noise on the damage identification scheme was also investigated numerically. Finally, the applicability and the limitation of the proposed method' were discussed.

  • 본 연구는 적층복합보에 있어서의 층간분리현상을 추적하는 기법을 소개하고 있다. 이 기법에서는 층간분리된 보와 층간분리되지 않은 보와의 응답차이를 최대화하도록 조화운동의 가력을 보위별로 최적화한다. 2개층의 알루미늄 보에 대하여 수치해석을 수행하였으며, 계측 및 보의 형태에 따른 노이즈를 고려하였다. 층간 분리를 모델링하기 위하여 스텝함수를 사용하였으며 층별 복합판 이론에 기본한 유한요소법을 이용하여 해석하였다.

Optimization of structural and mechanical engineering problems using the enriched ViS-BLAST method

  • In this paper, an enhanced Violation-based Sensitivity analysis and Border-Line Adaptive Sliding Technique (ViS-BLAST) will be utilized for optimization of some well-known structural and mechanical engineering problems. ViS-BLAST has already been introduced by the authors for solving truss optimization problems. For those problems, this method showed a satisfactory enactment both in speed and efficiency. The Enriched ViS-BLAST or EVB is introduced to be vastly applicable to any solvable constrained optimization problem without any specific initialization. It uses one-directional step-wise searching technique and mostly limits exploration to the vicinity of FNF border and does not explore the entire design space. It first enters the feasible region very quickly and keeps the feasibility of solutions. For doing this important, EVB groups variables for specifying the desired searching directions in order to moving toward best solutions out or inside feasible domains. EVB was employed for solving seven numerical engineering design problems. Results show that for problems with tiny or even complex feasible regions with a larger number of highly non-linear constraints, EVB has a better performance compared to some records in the literature. This dominance was evaluated in terms of the feasibility of solutions, the quality of optimum objective values found and the total number of function evaluations performed.

A LOGARITHMIC CONJUGATE GRADIENT METHOD INVARIANT TO NONLINEAR SCALING

  • A Conjugate Gradiant (CG) method is proposed for unconstained optimization which is invariant to a nonlinear scaling of a strictly convex quadratic function. The technique has the same properties as the classical CG-method when applied to a quadratic function. The algorithm derived here is based on a logarithmic model and is compared to the standard CG method of Fletcher and Reeves [3]. Numerical results are encouraging and indicate that nonlinear scaling is promising and deserves further investigation.

  • For a multi-input, multi-output system, it is widely known that feedback control gain presents extra freedom pole placement problem. An eigenstructure assignment utilizes this freedom for assignment of all or some elements of the closed-loop eigenvectors. In this paper, a nonlinear optimization technique is adopted to obtain a small gain controller that assigns closed-loop eigenvalues and elements of eigenvectors simultaneously. To illustrate the approach, a numerical example of the Airplane mode decoupling using an advanced fighter is shown.

  • In this paper, a method associating with one new form of nonmonotone linesearch technique is proposed, which can be regarded as a generalization of the Perry-Shanno memoryless quasi-Newton type method. Under some reasonable conditions, the global convergence of the proposed method is proven. Numerical tests show its efficiency.

  • In this paper, we develop a nonmonotone spectral memory gradient method for unconstrained optimization, where the spectral stepsize and a class of memory gradient direction are combined efficiently. The global convergence is obtained by using a nonmonotone line search strategy and the numerical tests are also given to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • This work is focused on a parametric numerical study of the barrier's bar inclination shelter effect in crosswind scenario. The parametric study combines mesh morphing and design of experiments in automated manner. Radial Basis Functions (RBF) method is used for mesh morphing and Ansys Workbench is used as an automation platform. Wind barrier consists of five bars where each bar angle is parameterized. Design points are defined using the design of experiments (DOE) technique to accurately represent the entire design space. Three-dimensional RANS numerical simulation was utilized with commercial software Ansys Fluent 14.5. In addition to the numerical study, experimental measurement of the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle is performed in order to define the critical wind disturbance scenario. The wind barrier optimization method combines morphing, an advanced CFD solver, high performance computing, and process automaters. The goal is to present a parametric aerodynamic simulation methodology for the wind barrier shelter that integrates accuracy and an extended design space in an automated manner. In addition, goal driven optimization is conducted for the most influential parameters for the wind barrier shelter.

자동차 클러치 페달 암의 무게 최소화를 위한 형상 최적설계 (Shape Optimal Design to Minimize the Weight of the Pedal Arm of an Automotive Clutch)

  • Optimal thickness and shape of the pedal arm of an automotive clutch is determined, using the numerical optimization technique, by solving the size and shape optimization problems to minimize its weight. For the optimization problems, two cases of stress and displacement constraints are considered: one from the vertical, and the other from the transverse stiffness test condition. The result of the transverse case is shown to be more conservative than that from the vertical case, being determined as the final optimum.
