This paper describes a model test and numerical simulation of a 750-kW-semi-submersible platform wind turbine under several wind and wave conditions for validation of the numerical simulation model. The semi-submersible platform was designed to support the 750-kW-wind turbine class and operate at a water depth of 50 m. The model tests were performed to estimate the performance characteristics of the wind turbine system in the wide tank of the University of Ulsan. Motions and loads of the wind turbine system under the wind and wave conditions were measured and analyzed. The NREL-FAST code was used to simulate the wind turbine system, and the results were compared with those of the test model. The results demonstrate that the numerical simulation captures noticeably the fully coupled floating wind turbine dynamic responses. Also, the model shows a good stability and small responses during waves, wind, and operation of the 750-kW-floating offshore wind turbine.
A hybrid system is a dynamical system in which states can be changed continuously and discretely. Simulation based on numerical methods is the widely used technique for analyzing complicated hybrid systems. Numerical simulation of hybrid systems, however, is subject to two types of numerical errors: truncation error and round-off error. The effect of such errors can make an impossible transition step to become possible during simulation, and thus, to generate a simulation behavior that is not allowed by the model. The possibility of an incorrect simulation behavior reduces con.dence in simulation-based analysis since it is impossible to know whether a particular simulation trace is allowed by the model or not. To address this problem, we define the notion of Instrumented Hybrid Automata (IHA), which considers the effect of accumulated numerical errors on discrete transition steps. We then show how to convert Hybrid Automata (HA) to IRA and prove that every simulation behavior of IHA preserves the discrete transition steps of some behavior in HA; that is, simulation of IHA is sound with respect to HA.
A new moving boundary technique for leap-frog finite difference numerical mode is proposed for the resonable simulation of coastal inundation over discontinuous topography. The new scheme improves the moving boundary technique developed by Imamura(1996). The present scheme is tested using the analytical solution of Thacker(1981) for the case of free oscillation with moving boundary in a parabolic bowl. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted for the flooding over a tidal barrier constructed on a simple concave geometry. A general feature of inundation over a discontinuous topography is well described by the numerical model.

Tribological phenomena such as wear or transfer are influenced by various factors and have complicated behavior. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the gribological phenomena because of their complexity. But, those tribological phenomena can be considered simply as to transfer micro material particles from the sliding interface. Then, we proposed the numerical simulation method for tribological phenomena such as wear of transfer using stochastic process models. This numerical simulation shows the change of the 3-D surface topography. In this numerical simulation, initial 3-D surface toughness data are generated by the method of non-causal 2-D AR (autoregressive) model. Processes of wear and transfer for some generated initial 3-D surface data are simulated. Simulation results show successfully the change of the 3-D surface topography.
Feasibility is studied for an application of the mass-spring lattice model (MSLM), a numerical model previously developed for unidirectional composites, to the numerical simulation of ultrasonic inspection of austenitic welds modeled as transversely isotropic. Fundamental wave processes, such as propagation, reflection, refraction, and diffraction of ultrasonic waves in such an inspection are simulated using the MSLM. All numerical results show excellent agreement with the analytical results. Further, a simplified model of austenitic weld inspection has been successfully simulated using the MSLM. In conclusion, a great potential of the MSLM in numerically simulating ultrasonic inspections of austenitic welds has been manifested in this work, though significant further efforts will be required to develop a model with field practicality.

Nowadays, the study on Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) is being performed globally. Dozens of numerical simulation tools have been developed for designing FOWTs and simulating their performances in combined wave and wind environments. On the other hand, model tests are still required to verify the results obtained from numerical simulation tools. To predict seakeeping performance of the OC3-Hywind platform, a OC3 spar model moored by a 3-leg catenary spread mooring system with a delta connection was built with a 1/128 scale ratio. The model tests were carried out for various sea states, including rotating rotor effect with wind in the Ocean Engineering Wide Tank, University Of Ulsan (UOU). The model test results are compared with the numerical simulations by UOU in-house code and FAST.
Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.
Explicit numerical integration methods for power system transient stability simulation require very small time steps to avoid numerical instability. The EXST1 exciter model is a primary source of fast dynamics in power system transients. In case of the EXST1, the required small integration time step for entire system simulation increases the computational demands in terms of running time and storage. This paper presents a practical exciter model reduction approach which allows the increase of the required step size and thus the method can decrease the computational demands. The fast dynamics in the original EXST1 are eliminated in the reduced exciter model. The use of a larger time step improves the computational efficiency. This paper describes the way to eliminate the fast dynamics from the original exciter model based on linear system theory. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, case studies with the GSO-37 bus system are provided. Comparisons between the original and reduced models are made in simulation accuracy and critical clearing time.
A numerical model is introduced to simulate propagation, reflection, and scattering of elastic waves in solids. The model consists of mass points and linear springs, interconnected with in a lattice structure; hence, its name, the mass-spring lattice model (MSLM). The MSLM has successfully been applied to the numerical simulation and visualization of various elastic wave phenomena involved in ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT). This method is useful to simulate, design, or analyze actual testing. Some representative examples of numerical simulation using the MSLM are presented, and future work necessary for its further development Is addressed.

In the first part of this study, a numerical simulation model was developed using the mechanical APDL software to validate the results of the 3D-elastisity theory on the laminated sandwich plate developed by Panago. The numerical simulation model showed a good agreement to the results of Pagano's theory in terms of deflection, normal stresses, and shear stresses. In the second part of this study, the developed numerical simulation model was used to define different plates dimensions and fibers layup orientations to examine the load response in terms of deflection and stresses. Further analysis was implemented on the natural frequencies of laminated xxx plates of the plates. The layup configurations include Unidirectional (UD), Cross-Ply (CP), Quasi-Isotropic (QI), the linear bio-inspired known as Linear-Helicoidal (LH), and the nonlinear bio-inspired known as Fibonacci-Helicoidal (FH). The following numerical simulation model can be used for the design and study of novel, sophisticated bio-inspired composite structures in a variety of configurations subjected to sinusoidal or constant loads.
