  • This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition characteristics of n-heptane and n-butanol mixture. The $O_2$ concentration was fixed to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) rate condition. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine. In addition, a numerical study of the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species after combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing n-butanol ratio and the reactivity decreased by low $O_2$ concentration.

  • The present investigation is concerned with two dimensional deformation in a non local thermoelastic solid with two temperatures due to time harmonic sources. The nonlocal thermoelastic solid is homogeneous with the effect of two temperature parameters. Fourier transforms are used to solve the problem. The bounding surface is subjected to concentrated and distributed sources. The analytical expressions of displacement, stress components and conductive temperature are obtained in the transformed domain. Numerical inversion technique has been applied to obtain the results in the physical domain. Numerical simulated results are depicted graphically to show the effect of nonlocal parameter and frequency on the components of displacements, stresses and conductive temperature. Some special cases are also deduced from the present investigation.

  • Two cases with circumferential grooves were designed for a transonic compressor, and 3-D numerical simulations were conducted for stall mechanism at three representative speeds. A conclusion can be drawn from the comparison between compressors with or without casing treatment that: with the rising of rotation speed, stall margin increases dramatically under the help of casing treatments, and the case with middle grooves has reasonable compromise between stall margin increment and efficiency cutting. At lower speed, the increment reduces, and grooves at the back of blade tip have more influence on stall margin. Further investigation shows there is a transition in mechanism of compressor stall with the decline of rotational speed: at high rotation speed, the expansion of stall margin mainly results from the suppression of tip leakage vortex by casing treatments, yet it benefits more from the depression of boundary layer separation from suction surface of blade tip.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.

  • An extensive numerical investigation on the magnetorheological (MR) damper-based smart passive control system for mitigating vibration of stay cables under wind loads has been conducted. The smart passive system is incorporated with an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device for reducing complexity of the conventional MR damper based semi-active control system by eliminating an external power supply part and a feedback control part (i.e., sensors and controller). In this study, the control performance of the smart passive system has been evaluated by using a cable structure model extracted from a full-scale long stay cable with high tension. Numerical simulation results of the proposed smart damping system are compared with those of the passive and semi-active control systems employing MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the results that the control performance of the smart passive control system is better than those of the passive control cases and comparable to those of the semi-active control systems in the forced vibration analysis as well as the free vibration analysis, even though there is no external power source in the smart passive system.

  • Three-dimensional heat transfer characteristics for natural convection flows are numerically investigated in the doubly-inclined cubical-cavity according to the variation of a newly defined orientation angle of the hot wall surface from horizontal plane at moderate Rayleigh numbers. Numerical simulations of laminar flows are conducted in the range of Rayleigh numbers($10^4{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^5$) and $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha}90^{circ}$ with a solution code(PowerCFD) employing unstructured cell-centered method. Comparisons of the average Nusselt number at the cold face are made with benchmark solutions and experimental results found in the literature. It is found that the average Nusselt number at the cold wall has a maximum value around the specified orientation ${\alpha}$ at each Rayleigh number. Special attention is also paid to three-dimensional thermal characteristics in natural convection according to new orientation angles at Ra= $1{\times}10^5$, in order to investigate a new additional heat transfer characteristic found in the range of above Ra = $6{\times}10^4$.

  • Experimental and numerical analysis on the heat transfer behaviors and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with two inclined perforated baffles($\;5^{\circ}$) mounted on the bottom plate has been systematically performed. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6, 9 holes) and flow Reynolds number on heat transfer characteristics of the heated target surface are explored. A combination of two baffles of same overall size was considered and the flow Reynolds number for this study is varied between 28,900 and 61,800. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 5.7 are made. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with the two baffles installed at $x/D_h=0.8\;and\;x/D_h=8.0$, it is evident that there exist an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the maximum Nusselt number decreases with increasing number of holes.

  • Cylindrical steel tanks are important components of industrial facilities. Their safety becomes a crucial issue since any failure may cause catastrophic consequences. The aim of the paper is to show the results of comprehensive FEM numerical investigation focused on the response of cylindrical steel tanks under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes. The effects of different levels of liquid filling, the influence of non-uniform seismic excitation as well as the aspects of diagnosis of structural damage have been investigated. The results of the modal analysis indicate that the level of liquid filling is really essential in the structural analysis leading to considerable changes in the shapes of vibration modes with a substantial reduction in the natural frequencies when the level of liquid increases. The results of seismic and paraseismic analysis indicate that the filling the tank with liquid leads to the substantial increase in the structural response underground motions. It has also been observed that the peak structural response values under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes can be comparable to each other. Moreover, the consideration of spatial effects related to seismic wave propagation leads to a considerable decrease in the structural response under non-uniform seismic excitation. Finally, the analysis of damage diagnosis in steel tanks shows that different types of damage may induce changes in the free vibration modes and values of natural frequencies.
