Comparison of Outcomes and Recurrence in Chronic Subdural Hematoma Patients Treated by Burr-Hole Drainage with or without Irrigation

  • Purpose: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common disease in elderly patients and is usually treated by burr-hole drainage. However, the optimal surgical technique for treating CSDH has not been determined. In this study, we analyzed outcomes and recurrence rates after burr-hole drainage with or without irrigation in patients with CSDH. Methods: Eighty-two CSDH patients treated with burr-hole drainage at Wonju Severance Christian Hospital from March 2015 to June 2016 were enrolled in this study. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the surgical technique performed as follows: single burr-hole drainage without irrigation (group A, n=47), single burr-hole drainage with irrigation (group B, n=14), or double burr-hole drainage with irrigation (group C, n=21). These three groups were compared with respect to clinical and radiological factors and the recurrence rate, and independent factors predicting recurrence were sought. Results: After burr-hole drainage, CSDH recurred in 15 (18.3%) of the 82 patients, and six patients (7.3%) required reoperation. More specifically, recurrence was observed in 12 patients (25.5%) in group A, one (7.1%) in group B, and two (9.5%) in group C. The number of burr-holes did not significantly affect recurrence (odds ratio [OR]=0.38; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60-2.38), but irrigation had a significant effect (OR=0.20; 95% CI: 0.04-0.97). Conclusions: This study shows that irrigation during burr-hole surgery in CSDH patients significantly reduced the risk of recurrence, regardless of the number of burr-holes used. We therefore recommend the use of active irrigation during burr-hole drainage surgery in CSDH patients.

Impact of Irrigation Extension on Malaria Transmission in Simret, Tigray, Ethiopia

  • Poor subsistence farmers who live in a semi-arid area of northern Ethiopia build irrigation systems to overcome water shortages. However, there is a high risk of malaria transmission when increased standing water provides more favorable habitats for mosquito breeding. This is a serious problem because there are many barriers to malaria control measures and health care systems in the area. Using a causal loop diagram and computer simulations, the author attempted to visually illustrate positive and negative feedbacks between mosquito and human populations in the context of Simret, which is a small village located in northern Ethiopia and is generally considered a malaria-free area. The simulation results show that the number of infectious mosquitos increases to 17,215 at its peak, accounting for 3.5% of potentially dangerous mosquitos. At the same time, the number of sick people increases to 574 at its peak, accounting for 15% of local population. The malaria outbreak is controlled largely because of a fixed number of vulnerable people or local population that acts as an intermediate host.

Stability Analysis of Some Agronomical Characters and Yield Components of Barley in Response to Irrigation Period

  • With the aim to analyze stability performance of six promising barley genotypes, eleven yield related characters were evaluated employing varied irrigation treatments under the tropical climate of Northern part in Bangladesh. Analysis of variance(ANOVA), phenotypic index, regression co-efficient(bi) and deviation from regression($s^2_d$) of the individual genotypes were estimated to evaluate the stable performance of the genotypes. A significant interaction was observed between the genotypes and irrigation period($G{\times}T$). Among all the genotypes, BSH-2 showed stable performance for plant height under different irrigation period, where $P>\bar{X},\;bi{\sim}1\;and\;s^2_d{\sim}0$. High phenotypic index, lower bi value and low deviations from regression were observed in case of spikelet number per spike and grain number per spike for genotype BSH-2 and plant height, spike length and harvest index per plant for BB-2 which suggest that those parameters were not usually affected by irrigation. On the other hand the genotype BSH-2 for tiller number and BB-1 for the fertile tiller number were not suitable for favorable moisture content, where $P<\bar{X},\;bi>1.0\;and\;low\;s^2_d$. Thus we suggest that genotype BSH-2 might have transmit high mean and increased phenotypic stability to the next progenies, which may consider as an ideal genotype for developing improved barely cultivars.

  • 점적관수(點滴灌水) 재배(栽培)가 양파의 채종량(採種量)에 미치는 영향(영향)을 구명(究明)코자 시험(試驗)하였던바 그 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1 생육형질(생육혈질)로서 분약수(分藥數), 엽수(葉數), 초장(草長), 엽견장(葉堅長) 관화율(關花率)은 2월(月)-3월(月) 비닐하우스피복구(被覆區)와 3월(月) 비닐하우스 피복구(被覆區)에서 점적관수(點滴灌水)로 재배(栽培)할때에 가장 양호(良好)하였다. 2. 채종량(採種量)의 구성형질(構成形質)로서 화륜경(花輪梗핵), 화경당(花梗當) 소화수(小花數), 임실율(稔實率)은 2월(月)-3월(月) 비닐하우스 피복구(被覆區)나 3월(月) 비닐하우스 피복구(被覆區)에서 점적관수(點滴灌水)로 재배(栽培)할때에 가장 양호(良好)하였기에 채종량(採種量)도 가장 많았다.

  • In this study, the actual water management were investigated and analyzed on site for effective use of the paddy irrigation water. And this study is tried to analyze the difference between simulated irrigation water according to current design method and actual water supply in experimental reservoirs. The reservoirs in Idong, Yongdeok and Misan, which are managed by Korea Rural Community & Agriculture Corporation, were selected fur field investigation. The purpose of this study is to suggest an improved method for irrigation water calculation through quantitative and periodical analysis considering the difference between design and actual field condition.

  • 고온기(高溫期)에 물관리(管理)를 방법(方法)의 효과(效果)를 알고져 시험(試驗)을 실시(實施)하였던바 그 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 물의 항시유괘관수(恒時流掛灌水) 함으로서 $1.5^{\circ}C$의 수온(水溫)을 저하(低下)시켰다. 2. 물을 항시유괘관수(恒時流掛灌水) 함으로서 뿌리의 양(量)을 많게 하였을뿐 아니라 지표부위(地表部位)에 뿌리의 분포(分布)를 많게 하여 지표(地表) 5cm하내(下內)의 뿌리의 분포량(分布量)이 항시담수구(恒時湛水區)에서는 40%에 비(比)하여 항시유괘관수구(恒時流掛灌水區)에서는 60%에 달(達)하였다. 3. 유괘관수구(流掛灌水區)에서 지엽장(止葉長) 및 지엽면적(止葉面積)이 증가(增加)되었다. 4. 유괘관수구(流掛灌水區)에서 성숙기(成熟期)의 엽량내(葉良內)에 전질소(全窒素) 및 규산(珪酸)의 함량(含量)이 많았다. 5. 항시유괘관수구(恒時流掛灌水區)에서 수수(穗數) 및 1수영화수(穗穎花數)를 증가(增加)시켜 수량증가(收量增加)를 가져왔다.

  • KRC (Korea Rural Community Corporation) is in charge of about 3,400 agricultural reservoirs out of 17,240 agricultural reservoirs, and automatic water level gauges in reservoirs and canals were installed to collect reservoir and canal water level data from 2010. In this study, 10-minute water level data of 173 reservoir irrigation canals from 2016 to 2018 are collected, and discharge during irrigation season was calculated using rating curves. For estimation of water supply, irrigation water requirement was calculated with HOMWRS (Hydrological Operation Model for Water Resources System), and the summation of reservoir water storage decrease was calculated with daily reservoir storage data from RAWRIS (Rural Agricultural Water Resource Information System). From the results, the total yearly amount of irrigation water supply showed less than 10% difference than the irrigation water requirement. The regional analysis revealed that reservoirs in Jeollanam-do and Chungcheongnam-do supply greater irrigation water than average. On the contrary, reservoirs in Gyeongsangnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do supply less than others. This study was conducted with a limited number of reservoirs compared to total agricultural reservoirs. Nevertheless, it can indicate irrigation water supply from agricultural reservoirs to provide information about agricultural water use for irrigation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of T-P concentrations in irrigation water on the growth, yield, and grain quality of rice. It acquire fundamental knowledges to set up irrigation water quality standards. The pot experiment was conducted with 5 treatments using irrigation waters. It consisted of various total phosphorus concentrations(control, 1, 2, 5, 10mg/L) and replicated four times with randomized block design. The results of this study showed that as T-P concentrations in irrigation water increases, plant height tended to increase. Dry weight of rice plant at T-P 10mg/L was significantly higher than the control. However, T-P in irrigation water did not affect plant height, tiller number, plant dry weight, yield, and quality of rice.

저수지 안전관리를 위한 위험도 해석의 필요성과 도입방안 (Schematic Development of Risk Analysis for Dam Safety)

  • Korea has 17,500 irrigation dams and facing variety of causes that jeopardize dam safety. With limited resources available to manage large inventory, a portfolio risk analysis application method for numerous irrigation dam safety is essential. The purpose of this study is to find an optimum way to adopt the risk analysis to the large number of irrigation dams in Korea and to propose the portfolio risk analysis process for irrigation dams. In this study, the necessity of the risk analysis for reservoirs safety has been suggested and a phased process using pre-screening and screening methodology has been proposed. This proposed procedure will help to effectively introduce the risk analysis for reservoirs safety in Korea.

반월지구의 일별 논담수심의 특성분석 (Analyzing Daily Water Level Fluctuations at Banweol Paddy Fields)

  • This paper attempts to characterize general tendency in water level fluctuations at paddy fields, that may be important to efficient irrigation water uses Banweol district was chosen to be the study area, and water levels among irrigation practice parameters were measured daily throughout the irrigation periods of 1985-1986. Time series analyses showed that water levels at fields have strong serial correlationships. A rather long term periodicity was also observed from spectral analyses. Correlationships between water levels at adjacent fields ranged 0.4-0.9, indicating wide variations in irrigation practices. The water levels showed little correlationships with meteorological factors like evapotranspiration, nor with irrigation practices like water supply rates. Standard errors of the average water levels were computed for different number of field plots within a block. The results indicated that low level areal coverage of gauging plots may be applied for field monitoring of daily water level fluctuations.
