  • Recently only a few correlations between various factors due to the different grades of surface roughness for the nucleate pool boiling have been proposed. The main purpose of this work is to test the validity of these types of correlations between related factors to nucleate pool boiling phenomena. The boiling experiments using distilled water were carried out at the heat flux ranging from $7.4\times10^4\;to\;2.4\times10^5kcal/m^2h$ on the sintered porous metal surface with the cavity diameter of 10, n, 40, 70, $100{\mu}$, respectively, at the atmospheric pressure, To determine the bubble sizes, number of nucleation sites, delay and growth time, frequency of bubble emission and rising velocities of bubbles, the high speed motion picture technique was employed. In the correlation $f{\propto}D_b^n$, where f denotes frequency of bubble emission and $D_b$ departure diameter, n, the power factor of $D_b$, have been found to be from -2 to -10/3. The correlation C in the correlation between heat flux q and density of nucleation sites $\frac{N}{A}$, $q=C(\frac{N}{A})^n$, was appeared to be more crucial than the power factor n. The correlation of the heat flux q to the temperature difference ${\Delta}T$ and the density of nucleation sites$\frac{N}{A}$, was proposed to be $$q-460{\Delta}T^{\frac{5}{4}}=K{\Delta}T{\frac{5}{3}}(\frac{N}{A})^{\frac{2}{3}}$$. The values of heat transfer coefficient obtained in this experiments for the porous sintered metal surface appeared to be very high in comparison with the formerly obtained results for the other surfaces.

  • In this study, experiments were carried out to provide nucleate pool boiling heat transfer data for a plain tube and 4 different low fin tubes employing 2 refrigerant mixtures of R410A, R407C, and 12 pure fluids. Low fin tubes were machined on a 19.05mm nominal outside diameter copper block according to the manufacturer's low fin tube specifications. Cartridge heaters were used to generate uniform heat flux on the tubes. For all refrigerants, heat flux varied from 10㎾/$\m^2$ to 80㎾/$\m^2$. It is found that heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of high vapor pressure refrigerants are usually higher than those of low pressure fluids. On the other hand, the fin effect was more prominent with low pressure refrigerants than with high pressure ones. Optimum fin density as well as the increase in heat transfer coefficient with the increase in fin density were found to be strongly fluid dependent. HTCs of Rl23, a low pressure alternative refrigerant, were similar to those of Rll while HTCs of R134a, an intermediate pressure alternative refrigerant, were roughly 20% higher than those of Rl2. Finally, HTCs of R32, R125, R143a, and R410A were all higher than those of R22 by 30~50%.

  • Pool Boiling heat transfer from controlled arrays of artificial nucleation sites was studied experimentally. Distilled water were boiled from artificial sites of uniform size, shape and spacing, drilled in superfinished copper horizontal surfaces at site density of 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100 per $2.25cm^2$. The results confirm the boiling heat transfer from artificial sites can be improved by increasing the site density N/A or temperature difference ${\Delta}T$ or both. Following experimental correlation were developed for predicting the heat transfer rate from the heating surface which has artificial sites. $$q/A = C(T_s - T_{sat})^{1.811}(N/A)^{0.41}$$

  • This paper presents a prediction of critical heat flux (CHF) in bubbly flow regime using dry-spot model proposed recently by authors for pool and flow boiling CHF and existing correlations for forced convective heat transfer coefficient, active site density and bubble departure diameter in nucleate boiling region. Without any empirical constants always present in earlier models, comparisons of the model predictions with experimental data for upward flow of water in vertical, uniformly-heated round tubes are performed and show a good agreement. The parametric trends of CHF have been explored with respect to variations in pressure, tube diameter and length, mass flux and inlet subcooling.

  • Component-scale modeling of boiling is predominantly based on the Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid approach. Within this framework, wall boiling is accounted for via the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) model and, within this model, the bubble is characterized using three main parameters: departure diameter (D), nucleation site density (N), and departure frequency (f). Typically, the magnitudes of these three parameters are obtained from empirical correlations. However, in recent years, efforts have been directed toward mechanistic modeling of the boiling process. Of the three parameters mentioned above, the departure diameter (D) is least affected by the intrinsic uncertainties of the nucleate boiling process. This feature, along with its prominence within the RPI boiling model, has made it the primary candidate for mechanistic modeling ventures. Mechanistic modeling of D is mostly carried out through solving of force balance equations on the bubble. Forces incorporated in these equations are formulated as functions of the radius of the bubble and have been developed for, and applied to, low-pressure conditions only. Conversely, for high-pressure conditions, no mechanistic information is available regarding the growth rates of bubbles and the forces acting on them. In this study, we use direct numerical simulation coupled with an interface tracking method to simulate bubble growth under high (up to 45 bar) pressure, to obtain the kind of mechanistic information required for an RPI-type approach. In this study, we compare the resulting bubble growth rate curves with predictions made with existing experimental data.

  • Heat transfer performance is studied for boiling and condensation of R-11 on integral-fin tubes. Nine tubes with trapezoidal integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654fpm and 10,30 grooves and finned tubes with caves of 0.55 and 0.64 mm height respectively are tested. in case of condensation CFC-11 condensates at saturation stat of 32℃ on the outside surface cooled by inside cooling water flows. And in case of boiling the refrigerant evaporates at a saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by hot water which circulates inside of the tube,. The tube having fin transfer coefficient concerns fin tubes with caves show higher valve than low fin tube having find density of 1299fpm and 30grooves. The overall heat transfer coefficient of fin tube with caves is about 5155 W/mK at 2.8m/s of water velocity, The value is abuot 2.7 times higher than plain tube and 1.3 times higher than low fin tube having fin density of 1299fpm and 30 grooves.
