  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant heat flux condition were performed using pure R113 for various channel heights under saturated pool condition. A circular heater of 1mm diameter, with artificial cavity in the center, fabricated using MEMS technique and the high-speed controller were used to maintain the constant heat flux. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effects of channel height on the bubble growth behaviors were analyzed as dimensional scales for the initial and thermal growth regions. The parameters for the bubble growth behaviors were bubble radius, bubble growth rate, and bubble shapes. These phenomena require further analysis for various surface angles, but this study will provide good experimental data with constant heat flux boundary condition for such works.

  • In this work, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R134a and R1234yf are measured, on flat plain, 26 fpi low fin, Turbo-B, Turbo-C and Thermoexcel-E surfaces. All data are taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$, on a small square copper plate ($9.53mm{\times}9.53mm$), at heat fluxes from $10kW/m^2$ to $200kW/m^2$, with an interval of $10kW/m^2$. Test results show that nucleate boiling HTCs of all enhanced surfaces are greatly improved, as compared to that of a plain surface. Nucleate pool boiling HTCs of R1234yf are very similar to those of R134a, for the five surfaces tested.

  • The Passive Auxiliary Feedwater System(PAFS) is one of the advanced safety concepts adopted in the Advanced Power Reactor Plus(APR+). To validate the operational performance of the PAFS, detailed understanding of a boiling heat transfer on horizontal tube outside is of great importance. Especially, in the mechanistic boiling heat transfer model, it is important to visualize the phenomena but there are some limitations with conventional experimental approaches. In the present study, we devised a heater based on the Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPCB) for a more comprehensive visualization and subsequently, a digital image processing technique for the bubble motion measurement was established. Using the measurement technique, important parameters of the nucleate boiling are analyzed.

  • Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTCs) were measured with one nonazeotropic mixture of propane/isobutane and two azeotropic mixtures of HFC134a/isobutane and propane/HFC 134a. All data were taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ on a horizontal plain tube of 19.0mm outside diameter with heat fluxes of $10\;kW/m^2\;to\;80kW/m^2$ with an interval of $10\;kW/m^2$ in the decreasing order of heat flux. The measurements were made through electrical heating by a cartridge heater. The nonazeotropic mixture of propane/isobutane showed a reduction of HTCs as much as 41% from the ideal values. The azeotropic mixtures of HFC134a/isobutane and propane/HFC134a showed a reduction of HTCs as much as 44% from the ideal values at compositions other than azeotropic compositions. At azeotropic compositions, however, the HTCs were even higher than the ideal values due to the increase in the vapor pressure. For all mixtures, the reduction in heat transfer was greater with larger gliding temperature difference. Stephan and Korner's and lung et al's correlations predicted the HTCs of mixtures with a mean deviation of 11%. The largest mean deviation occurred at the azeotropic compositions of HFC134a/isobutane and propane/HFC134a.

  • Thermal bubble formation is a fundamental process in nucleate boiling heat transfer and many microelectromechanical thermal systems. One of the established facts is that heterogeneous nucleation is originated from vapors trapped inside cavities. Based on this, we performed an experimental study on the formation of thermal bubbles from microcavity fabricated by microfabrication technology on a copper plate. The cavity was filled with aluminum particles to enhance thermal bubble formation. We observed the thermal bubble behaviors, such as bubble incipience, diameter, frequency and coalescence during nucleate boiling. The experimental data showed that the superheat required to trigger the bubble formation was significantly reduced when the cavity was filled with microparticles. We found that the initial increase of superheat led to the increase of both the departure diameter and frequency while the further increase of superheat caused multiple bubbles to coalesce resulting in the decrease of departure frequency.

  • This paper describes the boiling heat transfer phenomena to be divided into three regions, nonboiling, nucleate boiling and burn-out in the impinging subcooled water jet system. In the nonboiling region, Nusselt number is a function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number and ${\Delta}T_{sub}/T_{ast}$ In the nucleate boiling region, the heat flux increases with increment of the nozzle exit velocity. But the degree of liquid subcooling does not affect the shape of the nucleate boilng curve. The dimensionless correlations can be expressed in the form of $q{\ell}/K_f{\Delta}T_{ast}=C(Bo{\cdot}C_p{\cdot}{\Delta}T_{sat}/Vo^2)^m{\cdot}(Re/We)^n$. The burn-out heat flux increases linearly with increment of the nozzle exit velocity, but independs of degree of subcooling and the supplementary water height.

  • This paper describes the systems engineering development process for the Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (DNBR) algorithm using FPGA. Current Core Protection Calculator System (CPCS) requirement and DNBR logic are analyzed in the reverse engineering phase and the new FPGA based DNBR algorithm is designed in the re-engineering phase. FPGA based DNBR algorithm is developed by VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) in the implementation phase and VHDL DNBR software is verified in the software Verification & Validation phase. Test cases are developed to perform the software module test for VHDL software modules. The APR 1400 simulator is used to collect the inputs data in 100%, 75%, and 50% reactor power condition. Test input signals are injected to the software modules following test case tables and output signals are compared with the expected test value. Minimum DNBR value from developed DNBR algorithm is validated by KEPCO E&C CPCS development facility. This paper summarizes the process to develop the FPGA-based DNBR calculation algorithm using systems engineering approach.

  • Cleistothecial development in Aspergillus nidulans(teleomorph, Emericella nidulans) was examined with the transmission electron microscopy. Cleistothecial initial was a small coiled lump of cells, ca. 6 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, which was consisted of a slightly swollen core with a short "tail" hypha. Initials were wrapped with a loose layer of hyphae. Core cells of cleistothecial initials were broad and multinucleated at first, then formed dikaryotic ascogenous cells, followed by post-meiotic tetra-nucleate or octa-nucleate protoasci and finally mature ascospores. Croziers were formed early during cleistothecium development. The peridial layer of mature cleistothecia was derived from the wrapping hyphae which originally invested the young cleistothecium. Completion of peridial layers development was associated with the depositing of a non-enzyme reactive material around peridial cells. $H\ddot{u}lle$ cell formation during the cleistothecial development appeared to be somewhat coordinated with the developmental stages of cleistothecium.
