  • The nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments are performed using a ternary refrigerant R407C which is a candidate of alternatives of HCFC 22. The boiling phenomena for R-32, R-125, and R-134a which are the constituent refrigerants of R407C are also investigated to give the foundation of theoretical research for the mixture component boiling. The nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C is less than those of HCFC 22 which has the similar physical and transport properties. Since the experimental results show the deterioration of boiling heat transfer coefficients of ternary mixture refrigerants R407C, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C cannot be obtained by the linear combination of boiling heat transfer coefficients from its constituent components R-32, R125, and R134a.

  • An experimental investigation on the incipience of nucleate boiling in forced flow of water is performed as a verification and extension of previous analysis. The effects of the subcooling, Reynolds number and surface curvature on the onset of nucleate boiling(ONB) in a concentric annulus flow channel with smooth inner heating surface is investigated experimentaly. Through flow visualization, the boiling phenomenon was observed directly and the experimental results were examined to find ONB heat flux. The results show that the variation of heat flux at ONB is increased linearly as the Reynolds number and subcooling are increased. The effect of surface curvature is very great specially for a small radius when radius of the inner heating tube is increased, the heat flux at ONB is almost inversely increased for the range of this investigation. It is found that the effect of convex surface curvature on ONB heat flux is very significant for a small radius.

  • In order to investigate the effects of an electric field on EHD(Electro-hydrodynamic) nucleate boiling hat transfer characteristics in a nonuniform electric field under saturated pool boiling, the basic study has been performed experimentally. In the present study, the working fluid is R-113 and the plate-wire electrode system is used to generate a steep electric field gradient. Boiling parameters are investigated by using a high speed camera. The electric field distribution around a wire is obtained to understand the effect of an electric field on bubble departure/movement. The experimental results show EHD effects are much more considerable when the applied voltage increases. Bubbles depart away from the heated wire in radial direction. It is confirmed that the mechanisms of EHD nucleate boiling are closely connected with the dynamic behavior of bubbles. The boiling parameters are significantly changed by the electric field strength. With increasing applied voltages, the bubble size decreases and the nucleation site density, bubble velocity and bubble frequency increase.

  • In this study, a high performance Bubble Jet Loop Heat Pipe (BJLHP) was developed using the enhanced nucleate boiling surfaces in an evaporating section. A sintered tube and GEWA-T(Wieland) tube were used enhance nucleate boiling. The thermal performance of these BJLHP was compared with the conventional smooth tube BJLHP with an effective thermal conductivity. This experiment was conducted under the following conditions : working fluid, charging ratio and input power of R-141b, 50%vol., 75W and 100W, respectively. As a result, the effective thermal conductivity of BJLHP with a sintered tube in the evaporating section was 300% higher than the smooth tube BJLHP.

  • A numerical study of subcooled onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) in a micro-channel under pulsed heating using volume of fluids (VOF) model was conducted. The VOF simulation adopting the existing experimental condition is compared to the experimental data. The time to ONB was determined when the void fraction at the microheater surface first appeared. The theoretical superheat for homogeneous nucleation relatively predicts the transient ONB results of convective flow of water well based on local temperature distribution. It was found that once heat load increases at the heater, transient flow boiling starts to occur faster.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to characterize nucleate boiling and burn-out heat flux for rectangular free jet with saturated water impinging perpendicularly and upward against a flat uniform heat flux surface. Heat flux measured for Reynolds number based on rectangular nozzle width and for aspect ratio. The result of nucleate boiling heat transfer was presented nondimensional experimental equation including Nusselt, Boiling, Subcooling, Reynolds and Weber number. The effect of aspect ratio of heated surface in the burn-out heat flux had not appeared distinctly. But for the same aspect ratio, burn-out heat flux increased linearly with increment of nozzle exit velocity.

  • A numerical method for simulating bubble motion during nucleate boiling is presented. The vapor-liquid interface is captured by a level set method which can easily handle breaking and merging of the interface and can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately than the VOF method using a step function. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. Also, a simplified model to predict the heat flux in a thin liquid microlayer is developed. The method is applied for simulation of a sliding bubble on a vertical surface to further understand the physics of partial boiling. Based on the computed results, the effects of contact angle, wall superheat and phase change on a sliding bubble are quantified.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant wall temperature were performed using pure R1l3 for subcooled, saturated, and superheated pool conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain the constant wall temperature and to measure the instantaneous heat flow rate accurately with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effect of the pool conditions on the bubble growth behavior was analyzed using dimensionless parameters for the initial and thermal growth regions. The effect of the pool conditions on the heat flow rate behavior was also examined. This study will provide good experimental data with precise constant wall temperature boundary condition for such works.

  • To evaluate the performance of nucleate boiling heat transfer between a plain and micro-fin surfaces, the experimental tests have been carried out under various conditions with fluorinert liquid FC-72, which is chemically and electrically stable. Two kinds of micro fins with the dimensions of $200{{\mu}m}{\times}20{{\mu}m}$ and $100{{\mu}m}{\times}10{{\mu}m}$ (width x height) were fabricated on the surface of a silicon chip. The experiments were performed on the liquid subcooling of 5, 10 and 20K under the atmospheric condition. The presented data showed a similar trend in the comparison with result of Rainey & You. Due to its expanded surface areas, the heat flux properties has been significantly enhanced on micro-fin surface comparing to the plain surface.

  • Direct numerical simulation of bubble growth and merger process on a single nucleation site during partial nucleate boiling is performed. The equations governing conservation of mass, momentum and energy are solved using a finite difference method combined with a level set method for capturing the vapor-liquid interface. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall. Also, a simplified formulation for predicting the evaporative heat flux in a thin liquid micro-layer is developed and incorporated into the level set formulation. Based on the numerical results, the bubble growth and merger pattern and its effect on the heat transfer are discussed.
