  • Countries that have been banned from building nuclear plants are becoming more tolerant in response to global warming and climate change. Thus, the construction of future nuclear plants will increase, and the competition will also intensify. A nuclear power plant has a long construction period compared with conventional construction projects. In order to gain a competitive advantage in nuclear power plant construction, the construction period must be decreased. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an exterior wall form for a reactor containment building to reduce the construction time by increasing the height of the form. The structural safety, constructability, and economic feasibility were analyzed to assess the applicability of the proposed form. The proposed form was determined to be structurally safe. Furthermore, the construction period was shortened by reducing the duration of the construction units, and the total construction cost and interest were also reduced. Therefore, the proposed form could contribute to reducing the construction period for nuclear power plants.

  • In the domestic nuclear power industry, concern about safety of nuclear power plants is continuously increased with the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. In order to enhance the safety of nuclear power plants, it is important to ensure that the power plants are operating with proper margin within the original design bases. Margin management is the process of ensuring that the NPP designer and operator are aware of the physical and operating limits, and potential and probability of failure, for each component in the plant. All components are subject to margin considerations, but the most important components by scope and attention are those related to safety-related systems and NPP safe shutdown.

  • In general, nuclear power plant concrete structure's performance has been very good with the majority of identified problems initiating during construction and corrected at that time. This study is experiments to improve drying shrinkage using glycol ether-based material for the durability of nuclear power plants. Thus, this study evaluated the obtained data from a mock up test for the practical use of concrete containing glycol ether. According to the results of this study, the concrete showed resistance performance of around 40% to drying shrinkage.

  • Even large construction projects of nuclear power plant construction and production data is increasing dramatically due to the introduction of ICT technologies, such as 3D scanning technology, wireless communication technology, virtual construction management technology. There are various attributes and types of data to be produced and managed because the documents generated by the contract method are different from the cost processing method. According to the requirements of the international nuclear bid, it is required to present the cost that is calculated based on resource quantity. This research considers ways in which the cost management based on the resource quantity.

  • Protective coatings at nuclear power plants should be designed to withstand exposure to ambient conditions during normal operation or design-basis accidents. However, there was a change in the perception of the protective coating to the revision of the Regulatory Guidelines by the NRC in July 2000. In other words, maintenance guidelines have been strengthened in order to minimize the clogging of the cooling water system due to the substances in the containment building. Therefore, KHNP, the contractor and operator of the nuclear power plant, plans to develop the coating system for nuclear power plants in accordance with the regulation, and plans to develop its own coating expert.

  • Technologies for reducing construction duration are key factors in nuclear power plant construction projects, as a reduction in construction duration at the construction phase leads to a reduction in construction cost and an increase in profits through the early operation of the nuclear power plant. To analyze the constructability of the height of single-layer placement of formwork for the Reactor Containment Building (RCB) exterior wall through lateral pressure according to the height of concrete placement, the deformation criteria for formwork, and a new form design, 'MIDAS GEN (hereinafter referred to as MIDAS)' is used in this study. The cost and workload of formwork are derived according to the unit of height of the RCB exterior wall. Based on the result, it was found that the higher the RCB exterior wall, the higher the material cost, and the less the construction duration and the less the total number of formwork layers. Based on this result, it is believed that the material cost and the construction duration can be appropriately determined according to the formwork height.

  • Nuclear power plant decommissioning has attracted attention according to the shutdown decision of Kori 1 which is Korea's first nuclear power plant. Nuclear power plant decommissioning is the one who never experienced ever in our country. So, its process is difficult and time-consuming. In addition, it is difficult to determine the decommissioning quantity. This study proposed the plan that can be used in quantity take-off for nuclear power plant decommissioning using BIM technology being utilized in recent construction industry. As a result, we suggested the method of BIM-based quantity take-off such as the selection decommissioning method and process, setting up of BIM modeling environment, establishment of OBS & WBS, integrated BIM modeling, the definition of quantity property. The proposed plan can be utilized usefully from when permanent stopping nuclear power plant occurs intensively. Furthermore, the overseas nuclear power plant decommissioning project order also are expected through technology securement based on this plan.
