  • A numerical study was made of flow behind a circular cylinder in a uniform flow, where the cylinder was rotationally oscillated in time. The temporal behavior of vortex formation was scrutinized over broad ranges of the two externally specified parameters, i.e., the dimensionless rotary oscillating frequency (.110.leq. $S_{f}$.leq..220) and the maximum angular amplitude of rotation (.theta.$_{max}$=15 deg., 30 deg. and 60 deg.). The Reynolds number (Re= $U_{{\inf}D}$.nu.) was fixed at Re=110. A fractional-step method was utilized to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with a generalized coordinate system. The main emphasis was placed on the initial vortex formations by varying $S_{f}$ and .theta.$_{max}$. Instantaneous streamlines and pressure distributions were displayed to show the vortex formation patterns. The vortex formation modes and relevant phase changes were characterized by measuring the lift coefficient ( $C_{L}$) and the time of negative maximum $C_{L}$( $t_{-C}$$_{Lmax}$) with variable forcing conditions.s.tions.s.s.s.

  • A numerical investigation is made of time-dependent buoyant convection in a square of a non-Boussinesq fluid. The density-temperature$({\rho}-T)$ relation is modeled by a quadratic function, with the maximum density ${\rho}_M$ at temperature $T_M$. The horizontal walls of the square are insulated, and a pulsating temperature $T_H=T_M+{\Delta}T'\;sin({\omega}{\tau})$ is imposed on the hot vertical sidewall. The temperature at the cold wall $T_c$ is constant. Extensive numerical solutions to the governing Navier-Stokes equations are portrayed. Resonance is identified by monitoring the amplitude of the mid-plane Nusselt number, $A(Nu^*)$. The primary resonance frequency is found by matching ${\omega}$ to the nondimensional basic mode $N_1$ of internal gravity oscillations. Due to the quadratic$({\rho}-T)$ relationship, the effective pulsation frequency for density, $2{\omega}$, is meaningful, which brings forth the secondary resonance frequency, i.e., $2{\omega}=N_1$

  • Since metallic foam will increase the performance of heat exchanger, it have caused many researcher's attention recently. Our research base on the model that metallic foams applied to heat exchanger. In this case, there is three kind of heat transfer mechanisms, heat conduction in fibers, heat transfer by conduction in fluid phase, and internal heat change between solid and fluid phases. In this paper we study both the hydraulic and thermal aspect performance. Pressure drop along air flow direction will be presented. As thermal aspect, we first discuss the acceptance of applying thermal equilibrium among the two phases. then to calculate the dimensionless temperature profile, the heat transfer coefficient and Nu number in 14 metallic foams(7 Aluminium foams, 7 FeCrAlY foams). All these discussion is based on the same velocity u=2 m/s.

  • Fullerene-60 nanoparticles were used for studying their effect on the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) biodegradation efficiency of two potential polymer-degrading consortia comprising three bacterial strains each. At a concentration of 0.01% (w/v) in minimal broth lacking dextrose, fullerene did not have any negative influence upon the consortia growth. However, fullerene was found to be detrimental for bacterial growth at higher concentrations (viz., 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1%). Although addition of 0.01% fullerene into the biodegradation assays containing 5mg/ml LDPE subsided growth curves significantly, subsequent analysis of the degraded products revealed an enhanced biodegradation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed breakage and formation of chemical bonds along with the introduction of ${\nu}C$-O frequencies into the hydrocarbon backbone of LDPE. Moreover, simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTG-DTA) revealed a higher number of decomposition steps along with a 1,000-fold decrease in the heat of reactions (${\Delta}H$) in fullerene-assisted biodegraded LDPE, suggesting the probable formation of multiple macromolecular byproducts. This is the first report whereby fullerene-60, which is otherwise considered toxic, has helped to accelerate the polymer biodegradation process of bacterial consortia.

  • The performance of a plate heat exchanger for using liquid solution in the absorption chiller-heater was analyzed. The model was developed by using the various performance prediction correlations. The performance characteristics of the plate heat exchanger with the mass flow rate ratio was verified by using experimental data. To investigate performance of plate heat exchanger with geometry variables, the chevron angle, corrugated wave length, and corrugation depth were changed. As a result, the capacity of Kim and Martin correlation models was similar with the experimental data, and the capacity difference was less than 2%. Besides, the pressure drop of Marin correlation model showed a similar variation with experimental data, and the difference of pressure drop was less than 1.5 kPa.

  • Energy, a critical input, is to be efficiently managed via waste heat recovery and energy reuse for the economic viability of a process industry. In particular, cement manufacture demands a huge quantum of energy, for the necessary reactions. Huge amounts of hot effluent gases are generated. Energy recovery from these waste gases is an area that is of contemporary research interest. Now, about 75% of total heat recovery takes place in the riser of the suspension pre-heater system. This article deals with the hydrodynamic and heat transfer aspects of riser typically used in the cement industry. An experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated with provision for the measurement of gas pressure and solid temperatures at different heights of the riser. The system studied was air - chalcopyrite taken in different particle sizes. Acceleration length ($L_A$) determined at different parametric levels was fitted to an empirical correlation: $L_A/d_t=4.91902(d_p/d_t)^{0.10058}(w_s/w_g)^{-0.11691}(u_g{\mu}_g/d_t^2g{\rho}_g)^{0.28574}({\rho}_p/{\rho}_g)^{0.42484}$. An empirical model was developed for Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers using regression analysis: $Nu=0.40969(Re_p)^{0.99953}(Pr)^{0.03569}$.

  • This research presented the heat resistance characteristics of heat sink which is newly designed through the experiment. For the same volume and base plate of heat sinks, the experiment of heat transfer characteristics was conducted for forced convection of layered type heat sink. The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the layered type heat sink were compared for the various kinds of fin pitches, fin heights and heights of heat sink. The results show that thermal resistance is decreased as the height of heat sink increases and the fin height and fin pitch decrease, From the experimental data of layered type heat sink, the correlation equation of Nusselt number was obtained as follows ; $$Nu=0.845{\cdot}Re^{0.393}{\cdot}(\frac{f_h}{D_h})^{0.160}{\cdot}(\frac{f_p}{D_h})^{0.372}{\cdot}(\frac{H_{hs}}{D_h})^{-0.942}$$

  • The swelling and stress-elongation experiments have been performed for two kinds of gels of tactic poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P-HEMA) with varying crosslinker concentrations. The gels of isotactic and syndiotactic P-HEMA were swollen in aqueous salt solutions upon varying molal concentrations. The solute used were NaCl, $MgCl_2$, $Na_2SO_4$, $MgSO_4$ and urea. The water content at equilibrium swelling and the salt partition coefficient were determined, and stress-elongation curves of the gels were obtained. From these results, the effective number of chain (${\nu}_e$) and the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (${\chi}_1$) were also obtained. The swelling experiment was also performed under varying solvents, and the degree of swelling was determined. The solubility parameter of P-HEMA was obtained as 13.4 (cal/mole)$^{l/2}$ using the correlation between the degree of swelling and the solubility parameter (${\delta}_1$) of solvents. The mechanical properties of syndiotactic P-HEMA is stronger than that of isotactic P-HEMA, and the water content of both gels become smaller when the crosslinking increases. Isotactic P-HEMA contains more water content than syndiotactic P-HEMA does.

  • An analytical method was developed for hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) stabilizers based on QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) sample preparation and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry analysis. HIF stabilizers potentially enhance the performance of athletes, and hence, they have been prohibited. However, the analysis of urinary HIF stabilizers is not easy owing to their unique structure and characteristics. Hence, we developed the QuEChERS preparation technique for a complementary method and optimized the pH, volume of extraction solvent, and number of extractions. We found that double extraction with 1% of formic acid in acetonitrile provided the highest recovery of HIF stabilizers. Moreover, the composition of the mobile phase was also optimized for better separation of molidustat and IOX4. The developed method was validated in terms of its precision, detection limit, matrix effect, and recovery for ISO accreditation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the application of the QuEChERS method, which is suitable as a complementary analytical method, in antidoping.

  • The microbiomes of two important rice cultivars in Vietnam which differ by their susceptibility to the bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease were analyzed through 16S rRNA amplicon technology. A higher number of operational taxonomic units and alpha-diversity indices were shown in the BLB-resistant LA cultivar than in the BLB-susceptible TB cultivar. The BLB pathogen Xanthomonas was scantly found (0.003%) in the LA cultivar, whereas was in a significantly higher ratio in the TB cultivar (1.82%), reflecting the susceptibility to BLB of these cultivars. Of special interest was the genus Acholeplasma presented in the BLB-resistant LA cultivar at a high relative abundance (22.32%), however, was minor in the BLB-sensitive TB cultivar (0.09%), raising a question about its roles in controlling the Xanthomonas low in the LA cultivar. It is proposed that Acholeplasma once entered the host plant would hamper other phytopathogens, i.e. Xanthomonas, by yet unknown mechanisms, of which the triggering of the host plants to produce secondary metabolites against pathogens could be a testable hypothesis.
